 First…. I’m surprised a 10 year resident is calling it I-95.  It’s actually a U.S. Highway… so it’s called U.S. 95.   That’s okay… common mistake.  :)

Did you know… odd numbered highways are Northbound and Southbound and even numbered highways are Westbound and Eastbound?  That is WHY we use the descriptions that we do. 

U.S. 95, for the most part, runs Northbound & Southbound… but form Rainbow Blvd. to Charleston Blvd… it appears to run Westbound and Eastbound.  That’s where the confusion comes in!

Today in my special report we took a look at where we are now when it comes to the 95 Widening project. Believe it or not… the final countdown is on! The project should be complete in a couple of weeks. In fact, most of the new northbound and southbound lanes should be open by the end of THIS week!

It really is going to make a difference. My photographer Matt and I were on the newly paved carpool lanes near Jones last week. Wow, the bright white lane markings and fresh paved road is great. I could see traffic moving faster already.

The wider highway includes five lanes on each side of the highway between the Rainbow Curve & Spaghetti Bowl. One of those lanes is an HOV or Carpool lane. The ones marked with a diamond. (We’ll have Carpool 101 coming up Tuesday)

Almost all the interchanges include new on and off ramps… plus there are new soundwalls too!

The Nevada Department of Transportation thinks the wider highway will really make a difference and an easier commute for all! They expect to have a good portion done any day now. There are still some ramp closures this week ( Southbound on ramps at Decatur & Valley View).

The project started back in January 2006. The Grand Opening Ceremony is scheduled for December 17th. The Governor and U.S. Secretary of Transportation will be there.
