After you turn right off of Azure Drive onto Sky Pointe Drive, there is no speed limit sign for quite awhile. Why is this? Can it be fixed?
Brian

Speed limits are set by the type of roadway, speed of traffic, and any unique roadway characteristics. Speed limit signs are required at the beginning of a speed change, and, anywhere motorists need a speed limit reminder.
The City of Las Vegas engineers performed a field review of Sky Pointe, and found your concern Brian, was accurate.
So it can, and will be fixed. The goal for installation of a new speed limit sign is this friday, March 19th. As far as why there was no sign?
There used to be a speed limit there, and someone, for some reason, removed it illegally. Your e-mail Brian brought this to the attention of traffic officials.
Why would someone want to steal a speed limit sign? Who knows….
Brian

Tim

If you don’t know the sign Tim is talking about, here it is. This photo was snapped by Tim on Charleston & Decatur.
But, you’ll see these signs all over town. Especially near freeways.
Tim, the fact that you’ve never seen these signs lit up means you have, somehow, avoided some of the trials and tribulations of driving in the valley.
These are directional, information signs. They are used when there is a situation, on our freeways.
They go by the name, trailblazer signs. If there is a major incident on the freeways, that requires detours, and traffic is flowing off freeways onto nearby surface streets, trailblazer signs are lit to help motorists to reaccess the freeway.
You feel a bump as you transition.
Was it done deliberately as a cost saving measure, or what?
Brooke

That bump your feeling Brooke is because the new asphalt placed on Oakey is roughly three quarters of an inch lower than the existing surface, on Rancho. It’s not a cost-saving measure. The culprit here is weather.
An additional top layer of asphalt, called Ultra-Thin Asphalt Concrete will be placed over the new pavement, on Oakey. Then it’ll be even with Rancho.
But, this top layer can only be placed when the weather is clear, dry, and consistently above 60 degrees.
Mid-April is the target start date to begin laying down the top layer, and it’ll take 3-4 weeks.
Everything will be evened out by mid-May.

Who has the right-of-way? I’m in the left turn only lane ready to make a U-Turn. My left turn green arrow turns on.
The car to my left has the red light, and wants to turn right. I think I have the right-of-way because I have the green light, but judging from the hand gestures, honking, and name calling, most drivers feel they have the right-of-way. It’s driving me crazy!
Shelly

Those drivers may feel they have the right of way with their honking and hand gestures, but you have the green light Shelly, so you have the legal right of way.
The driver waiting to turn right on a red, must yield to all oncoming traffic first, including you making your U-Turn on a green arrow.
Shelly experienced this on E. Flamingo & Claymont. But a reminder, U-Turns are legal anywhere in Las Vegas, except when a sign prohibits one.
Two other areas where you might experience these U-Turn troubles….Summerlin by Red Rock Casino, and Desert Inn and Harmon.
Is it possible to change this two-way, into a four-way stop?
Linda

Clark County studied this intersection in 2009.
They looked at the number of cars that use it, average speeds of those cars, and of course, the number of crashes.
The data showed the intersection did not meet warrants for a multi-way stop sign. It’s basically considered…too safe.
I drove Twain and McLeod yesterday, and I agree with you Linda.
Nearby McLeod and Viking, just a block south, and a very similar intersection, has a 4-way stop sign.
But again, the numbers are saying Twain and McLeod doesn’t need one. It comes down to math. County said they will re-study the intersection in June 2010. I’ll let you know what they find.
Have Ken fly over it anytime and see.
Sheri

Ken did just that. The Galleria Drive/Marks interconnect opened last Christmas. It’s been tough for cars stuck at the Marks stop sign, to get onto Galleria, with traffic whipping by at 45mph. Commuters often resort to editing the rules of the road.
A warrant study was conducted to determine whether the intersection volume, is enough, for a traffic signal.
They counted cars approaching the intersection, counted cars turning, made note of the average speed, and looked at crash history. They found the intersection does warrant a traffic signal.
Great news here, the traffic signal will be turned-on, in a matter of weeks.
Shoppers will be thankful….

We need some ramp meters on the southern Beltway! 215 (EB) traffic has to slow to almost a complete stop, to let the constant stream of cars into the flow of traffic. At the Durango/Sunset (EB) on-ramp- you have both lines of traffic getting on and there is no break! Are there plans for meters?
Jeremy
Las Vegas

Unfortunately Jeremy, there are no plans for southern Beltway ramp-meters. The design of the 215 Beltway includes auxiliary lanes between interchanges.
This extra lane gives drivers more time to merge in or out, which should help with traffic flow. That’s not the case lately.
The back-up is stemming from Design Build South construction, which is widening I-15, between Tropicana and Silverado Ranch.
Whenever lanes, and the speed limit, are reduced on the I-15, you have less room, and a bottleneck is created.
At the I-15 & 215 interchange, both a reduced speed to 55mph, and lane restrictions are currently in place.
This is one of those where you’re just going have to deal with this issue during the phases of construction that affect the I-15 & 215 interchange.
The Design Build South project will be done in 2011.
Brian

You said Jones is Pothole Blvd! True. But, here’s another one: Eastern between Pebble & Wigwam. When is this high traffic area going to be fixed?
Axel

This section of Eastern- is shovel ready. Construction bids are already out.
And Eastern will get the pavement rehab treatment.
Construction will be getting underway this summer, and expected to take 120 contract days.
Pavement Rehab is using federal stimulus money, to remove existing pavement, and, to resurface the road.
Eastern will be smoothed out between the 215 and Wigwam.
Now last week we talked about rocks that were flying up off Jones Blvd, and striking cars. We tossed out the idea of street sweepers.
To give County credit, they got the street sweepers out there shortly after the segment. Viewers were tweeting about the improvements, so hopefully street sweeping (every 7-10 days) will temporarily help with the rock issue on Jones.
Again, both Jones and Eastern will be permanently smoothed out by late summer.

Our children attend Harney middle school on Hollywood, just south of Charleston. The morning traffic and congestion there is really busy every day, and one child was hurt recently. What’s the deal with no sidewalks?
Larry & Peg

There’s no sidewalk, because Harney Middle School doesn’t own the land. The no sidewalk stretch is undeveloped land owned by the BLM.
In attempts to make getting to school safer, there’s a map given to parents to plan a safe route for their kids. There was also an asphalt path that was built by the school district for students that walk or ride bikes.
Other attempts at safety….marked crosswalks, school speed limit signs, and flashing beacons.
Parents can also contact the CCSD police – Community Outreach Program. Clark County School District police may be able to assist in helping to get students to and from school…safely.

On Jones between Tropicana and Russell, there are tiny rocks all over the road! You get pelted by rocks flying off the road as cars drive over them. All the bad grooves and holes seem to be filled with these rocks!
I am afraid to roll down my window for fear of a rock hitting me! What will it take to get this fixed?
Marilyn

Jones Blvd, also known as Pothole blvd!
Windows up, your car takes the brunt of it. Roll down the window, you might get a shiner.
Although they’ve done some temporary repairs, with little success, the long-term diagnosis is good. Jones is part of County’s Pavement Rehab project. Construction will start in the summer, and take 120 contract days. They’ll be resurfacing, this broken Blvd.
But, what about the immediate problem Marilyn? Those loose pavement rocks? Actual pieces of Jones Blvd. are pelting your car like a winter hailstorm.
….Ken had a good idea. Get a street sweeper out there. We both e-mailed County, and they’re checking to see if their street sweeping supervisors, can keep the road, on the actual road, rather than flying up at your car.
