Blue Diamond Left Unpaved and Unfinished
On Blue Diamond Road to Pahrump- the road’s torn up, lanes are blocked and uneven- and it’s bad for tires; and no one has been working there since Christmas! What is going on?
Leslie
Jay, Ann, Cindi, Danny and many others echoed Leslie’s frustration via e-mail.
The reason the work sat, unfinished and unpaved, is NDOT completed widening of State Route 160 (Blue Diamond) to four lanes faster than expected, back in December.
But, when they milled a few inches of asphalt they saw it was dry and worn, and a more aggressive treatment was needed.
That treatment is called dense grade, and needed more money, materials, and warmer overnights.
To be specific….1.2 million dollars more, and overnights of 70 degrees plus.
I’m told by NDOT it was too expensive to remove the barrels (hence the lane restrictions staying in place), but they did acknowledge- they didn’t expect it to take this long. So it has sat, since Christmas.
The dense grade will take three weeks, and then with the warmer nights, they’ll put down the final layer.
Those driving Blue Diamond, between Durango and the Red Rock turn-off, should have smooth, open roads later next month.
Your travel times, and tires, will benefit.
