The Cost of Repairs!

I love my car.   But it seems like even the littlest thing, cost a lot.

I had my first “minor” accident with my car that I have driven for about 4 years.   It was the silliest thing!  I opened my garage, pulled out, and bam!  I hit my husband’s truck.   It usually isn’t parked there.  No excuse.  I should have looked.  I usually do, but habit got the best of me!

So I crunched my bumper.

Did you know… get this…. a bumper cost about 750 dollars!! Yes, a bumper! Oh my goodness!  I didn’t break a tail light or anything.

Well, that’s life.  Nobody was hurt.  So I thought I was going to have to come up with a deductible.  But then, I found a friend’s Dad to do the work.  He has an auto body shop, and he is searching high and low for business in this rough economy.

He was able to “fix” it, instead of buy a new one.  So that saved me some cash.

The bumper looks like new.

Next, I have to replace my brakes and rotors.   Oh, and now I have an little oil drip!

What will that cost?!

UGH… you’re bringing back bad memories. At one point in time, about 2 years ago, my partner and I both had jobs. I had one nice, new vehicle and together we purchased a used car which was very cheap, good on gas and used for my partner to commute and for general around-town road trips. The used car was a 2000 Chevy Cavalier that had over 60,000 miles on it when we bought it. Well one day it started stalling out after it was started. I took it to… well, that’s not important because that dealership is no longer in business.

They “diagnosed” the problem and told me that the vehicle needed the following repairs: New fuel pump, new sending unit, new fuel filter, new spark plug wires (I had replaced the plugs on my own a few months earlier), a fuel injector cleaning and a throttle body cleaning.

Now I didn’t argue with any of this because I know a little about engines, and these all seemed like reasonable repairs, especially for a 6 year old car that was — at this time — pushing 100,000 miles.

I let them do the work and I paid the bill…. $1,600. YEEEEEEEEEOOOOOUUUUUCHHH!!

The funny thing is, I got the car home, parked it, changed clothes with the intention of going to dinner with friends, started the car up…… and it stalled. OMG, I was PISSED.

I took the car back the next day, absolutely fuming. I had smoke coming from my ears. They “re-diagnosed” the vehicle and found an electrical short in the ignition circuits which they repaired for free and — wonder of wonders — it fixed the stalling problem…

Just makes me wonder if that $1,600 of service was necessary… sure it’s a good idea to have new plugs, plug wires, clean injectors and the like, but I just wonder if I got hosed, you know…
