DMV Woes
Many people complain about the DMV…. especially in Las Vegas! The lines are long and nobody wants to wait. It can take hours to get a simple license updated.
Recently, I received this letter from a viewer:
Well the specific thing about the DMV is that nobody knows what to tell customers. They only give pieces of the information needed so you need to go back several times to get the complete information.
My wife has been trying to get her NV drivers license since August. The first visit we were told that we need a “copy” of our marriage certificate, they would not accept the original document. So we ordered the “copy” of our certificate. We went back to the DMV the next person said we needed my wife’s Social Security Card. This would have been a nice piece of information that could have been given to us on our first visit. This person finally gave us the check list for obtaining a NV license. So our next visit we brought the documents needed, we thought. My wife was married once before so her previous name did not match her birth certificate. Now we need to order a “copy” of my wife’s first marriage certificate. All of this information could have been given to us on our first visit. Some training of the staff at the DMV office would go a long way. This would increase customer satisfaction.
We moved here from California where we thought we had the worst DMV in the nation, we stand corrected.
I guess I would be extremely frustrated too! So… here’s a couple solutions.
Check the DMV website before you leave on your mission. It is actually a really good site… it tells you what you need, what’s expected…. and even in some cases, provides the paperwork for you to print out and fill out ahead of time.
There are also many times… you don’t even NEED to go to the DMV to get the job done… you can mail paperwork to Carson City or even do it online.
I recently wanted to update my address on my license. But, Ididn’t need a whole new license. I just wanted it to change officially and get a sticker to put on the back. I printed out forms, filled them out, and mailed them to Carson City.. it was great! A couple weeks later I got a sticker to put on the back of my license. I also received voter registration forms since my address changed. How convenient!
CLICK HERE for the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles website.
Also, if you do want to beat the lines… committ early! Get up on a Saturday morning ( or weekday if you can ) and stand in front of the DMV before the doors open! Yes, there will be people lined up… but still… you get through a lot quicker than just showing up mid day.
Good luck!!!

Want in and out of the DMV? arrive 20-30 minutes before they close. Before you leave bring everything you could possibly be asked for. (seriously) the fast pass doesn’t warrant a return trip! This includes but not limited to: Utility bills, lease papers, checks, proof of insurance, IPOD (to tune out the madness) and a large bottle of water.

Also for new lic. tags, they now have the ATM type machines that you simply go up to type in your information, put the bar code under the scanner from your smog check, pay the fee and you’re out. The past two times I went to get renewed for my plates, I was in and out in 5 (yes seriously) 5 minutes.

My complain is this They should start senting the form NRS 483.330 this form lets people know what they need in order to take their test on the opointment date. We learn this the hard way if you do not arrive on time for your appointment if you are more than 5 minutes late. They do not care that you took time out from your job to make your apointment. Oh, thats not their problem even if you wait 3 months for your opointment.Hey, your 5 mim late go home and get another oppointment. Should the DMV HAVE THAT KIND OF POWER? I say no, We need a driver liense to get to work or start college and I quess that is not important to them. Even if you waited 15 min 2 an hour for them to take care of you on your apointed date. You can wait 15 min for the Dmv for service but they will not allow you to be 5 min late.Their Service is the worth ever.Who run this office is my question? What are they doing for us anyway.
