A Better Place for Cigarette Butts!
It’s an issue that especially affects our Valley…. lit cigarette butts being thrown out car windows. Many people are concerned about this. We are so dry here, even a lit cigarette can start a brush fire, which can then lead to a major wilfire.
I have heard from many of you. So I decided to look more into this issue. Can you get a ticket for throwing out a cigarette? YES. In fact you can get a ticket with fines up to 1,000 dollars and up to one year in jail…. in the county or city. You can even get a ticket for just throwing out an empty pack or unlit cigarette! This is considered littering!
Keep in mind, if you are caught doing this… and it leads to a property damage fire or loss of life… you can be civily and ciminally punished for that.
NOW- if you disgard a cigarette on FEDERAL land… that’s is a whole different ball game. Punishement is even more severe. You can face fines up to 5,000 dollars and even more jail time. This is against the law. Federal land includes the Red Rock area and Mt. Charleston.

This is what I do with my cigarette butts, use a half-full water bottle and drop them in the water. Ashtray stays clean and cigarette butt is DEFINITELY put out…and no littering. I see so many people dropping their butts out the windows while driving. Come on people, think about what you are doing.

I am a smoker, and it drives me CRAZY when I see people throwing their cigarette butts on the ground. It has to be one of my biggest pet peeves. How hard is it to put the cigarette out and just throw it in the trash? I touch the tip to make sure it’s out for sure to make sure a fire doesn’t start too. Do people not realize that when they throw these things on the ground it goes into our sewers?
