Solving Traffic Problems!

My "What’s Driving You Crazy" segment is really taking off!

I have helped solve so many traffic issues already.  Our coverage and inquiries have helped give a little push and/or alert those responsible about traffic issues around town… everything from incorrect signs to roadways that need painted lanes.

I covered a few topics recently that were resolved within days:  the different exit signs and off ramp signs along the I-215 near the airport connector and I-15 interchange NOW MATCH… an incorrect sign on Lone Mountain near Allen was CHANGED to the correct symbol… LANE LINES were painted on Las Vegas Blvd. near Harmon… and now a faded "ONLY" sign on the road was REPAINTED at Lamb and Owens.

Viewers write me emails every day with issues that drive them crazy.  I am trying to find answers as quickly as possible.

I thought I would tell you about a couple of questions I covered recently… because I found out there are plans to change and improve some major intersections.  Mike from near Summerlin wrote in with concerns about the intersection of Charleston and Durango.  He thinks it’s dangerous.  He says the speed limit keeps changing on Durango…and the left turns are too quick from Charleston to Durango.

Here’s what I found out:

WORK HAS JUST STARTED ON THE DESIGN FOR A PROJECT TO ADD DUAL LEFT TURNS ALL AROUND… BUS TURNOUTS… AND EXCLUSIVE RIGHT TURN LANES.

THE CITY SAYS MAKING THESE CHANGES IS VERY DIFFICULT DUE TO UTILITY CONFLICTS AND THE LACK OF ANY RIGHT OF WAY TO MAKE THE IMPROVEMENTS.

THE CITY IS OPTIMISTIC THAT THIS PROJECT WILL GO OUT TO BID BY JULY.

AS FOR THE SPEED LIMITS… DURANGO IS 45 MILES PER HOUR FROM DESERT INN TO CHARLESTON BECAUSE IT’S A SIX LANE ROAD WITH NO HOMES FRONTING DURANGO.

IT GOES DOWN TO 35 MPH BECAUSE OF THE TIGHT CURVATURE OF THE ROAD.

Also, I have received a few complaints about the intersection of Owens and Lamb.

Here’s what I found out:

A PROJECT WAS ADVERTISED RECENTLY THAT WILL MAKE THAT SECTION OF LAMB BLVD. INTO A SIX LANE ROADWAY (THREE LANES IN EACH DIRECTION).

CLARK COUNTY ANTICIPATES OPENING BIDS ON OR ABOUT DECEMBER 21ST.  THEN THE PROJECT SHOULD START IN FEBRUARY 2007.  IT SHOULD TAKE APPROXIMATELY 120 DAYS TO COMPLETE PROJECT.  IT WILL INCLUDE RESTRIPING AND RESIGNING.

ONCE COMPLETE, BOTH LAMB’S "RIGHT TURN ONLY" LANES (NORTHBOUND AND SOUTHBOUND) WILL DISAPPEAR AND BECOME THROUGH TRAVEL LANES.

PART OF THE REASON FOR THIS CHANGE IS THAT TRAFFIC FLOW PATTERNS HAVE CHANGED AND THE TRAFFIC CAPACITY OF THE INTERSECTION NEEDS TO BE ENHANCED.

I use the Durango/Sunset exit every day to get home. Have you tried to take that off-ramp on I-215 and make any sense out of it? The minute you exit – there are two lanes both marked as left lane only. Then you find drivers who do not wish to exit on Durango panic and make all sorts of circus. Can someone signpost these lanes correctly? i.e. Left lane is left lane and right lane is straight and left!

Let’s not blame the Vegas drivers in Vegas, they do enough crazy things on their own!

THERE IS A SHORT STRIP OF ROAD (RENO AVE. – GILES ST.- MANDALAY BAY RD.)WHICH CONNECTS KOVAL TO LAS VEGAS BLVD. THE SPEED LIMIT IS 25MPH. THE PROBLEM IS – THE SPEED LIMIT IS NOT ENFORCED – THE REAL SPEED IS 35 TO 45MPH AND PEOPLE IN THIS AREA HAVE ALOT OF TROUBLE MERGING INTO THIS TRAFFIC. EITHER ENFORCE IT OR CHANGE IT. THANKS.

Aren’t trailers attached to autos or trucks suppose to have a licence plate and break/tail lights? I drive from the north west to henderson weekday mornings and it’s amazing how many trucks I see with various types of trailers that not only don’t have any licence plate or tail lights, they don’t look very stabe either. I have even seen a few on the side missing a wheel.

The light at Flamingo & 95 always turns red after catching the red light at Sandhill. This late at night like after midnight now you’d think they could fix this don’t you?????????????

  6. Rick Says:

In the Northwest area of 215 and Pecos. Pecos is closed in BOTH direction (no getting on or off the 215 or Pecos) BUT the traffice light continue to change and disrupt the flow of traffic. why can’t they turn-off or disable the traffic lights while Pecos is closed (and maybe turn on a week prior to road reopening to get traffic used to signal again)? I can’t believe that these lights are still on the off chance that somebody “may” make a U-Turn (as that is the only section of road open), there can be no other rational for disrupting the flow of traffic on the 215 20-30 times an hour, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, etc, etc!

For a year flood control and sewer pipe was being laid under Lone Mountain from before Allen to Decatur and beyond. They shut down our streets from access to Lone Mountain for months at a time and now it is a mess. The contractor ought to be ashamed of the shabby way they do business (lowest bid I suppose). Now it is finally finished and it needs major work. They asphalted it in 3 sections(left side, right side, middle) and the sections don’t meet so it is hard to steer and the water is going to flow right down the middle of it instead of either side (and when it rains it comes down that street like a flood even with flood control). Heading west from Allen there are at least 4 potholes (looks like a backhoe scraped and dug into it) that jar the heck out of a car and it is a brand new street!!!! Please find out what they plan on doing about it, it is disgraceful and the City of North Las Vegas ought to be ashamed.
    Thank You
