“Speeding”
"Speed Kills," "Speeding," "Speed Limits."
Within a matter of three minutes… I received three viewer emails with the above subject lines.
Obviously, speed is a concern in the valley. Someone wrote, "Why are the speed limits so high, and why don’t the police enforce the speed limit? Are there not enough policemen on duty here or is it too dangerous for them to pull people over in the heavy traffic? "
I know one thing, Metro Police and the Nevada Highway Patrol are always saying they need more traffic officers and troopers. You can only wonder if that would make a difference. A few times I rode with NHP on the highway, and people had no problem passing us going 95 miles per hour. It’s like drivers just don’t care. Or else, they are in such a rush, they don’t even notice who is around them.
On Monday’s (12/4) morning show we are going to discuss speed and speed limits with Metro Police. Did you know many of our main arterial streets have a posted speed limit of 45 miles per hour? I know, it’s hard to believe when you sit at a red light and your car shakes as people drive through the intersection. But, it’s true.

People fly by me in school zones on my way to work in the morning…15 MPH and they have to be going at least 2-3x that, and I NEVER see an officer around when this is going on. Traffic saturation sweeps seem to work for a limited time, so why not do these for 2-3 weeks at a time, every day, all over the valley, especially in and around school zones, until people start getting the hint? Hire more traffic officers, funded by part of the fines raised by the increased number of traffic tickets they will be issuing. Just my thoughts on the matter…

I think based on the size of the roads here and the level of traffic, most roads have very reasonable speed limits. As you say, there needs to be stricter enforcement of those limits. Let people do 45, 50 mph on the streets, but as soon as they hit 55+ nail them. That’s one of the things I like about driving in this town is that speed limits don’t seem to be set artificially low. There’s no reason traffic can reasonably flow at 45mph on surface streets.
Most highways with the exception of parts under construction seem to be a 65mph zone, which is very reasonable for an urban area. Of course those limits are also relative when you see a pack of cars all going 80+. Again, nothing to slow you down like a NHP car on the shoulder (when they’re not running accident to accident).

No one seems to care about speed limits here. I work in real estate and all my clients are apauled at how bad our drivers are, and not to mention sick over the insurance rates. The road rage has gotten worse, they run red lights and honk at you if you’re not flooring it the second the light turns green.
My understanding is there are not enough officers on the force which will eventually ruin our cities economy. This once great retirement place has turned into a crime ridden getto. But who cares about the locals, it’s all about the tourist & casinos right?
