VANITY PLATES

Don’t you love that name?  My colleague Charlotte Evans told me about it.

Vanity plates are the personalized license plates that, it seems like, ninety percent of Southern Nevadans have.

We were talking about how unique it is.

I’m from Upstate New York.  Hardly anyone has a Vanity Plate there.  We all just had numbers and letters that never added up to anything.  But when you did see one.. boy, was it exciting.  You usually chuckled as you tried to figure it out.

So when I moved here I was surprised to see so many.

Charlotte says she often notices the same Vanity Plates on the road with her every day as she comes to work.  She says it’s almost like you want to stop and introduce yourself.

Some of the good ones we’ve noticed recently:

ONLY1K ( A plate that was clearly not on a luxury vehicle, but the owner can be proud that unlike most of us, their car is probably paid for!)

YH8T ( In other words, Why Hate?)

If you have seen a unique plate out there… let me know.. drop me a comment

Charlotte says she thinks the reason personalizing is so popular here is because people come from all walks of life.  Many people don’t have an "idenity" – and this is a way to find one or express your character.  She thinks maybe it’s a way to help newcomers feel more like a "Nevadan."  I agree.

There is a fee though… it’s not free.  But for many, having character, is worth the price.

If you wanna join the "in" crowd…

One Response to “VANITY PLATES”

  1. Carol Says:

School zones: I dont understand why there cannot be flashing lights at EVERY school crossing! I know the school district doesnt have the funds, but why cant these huge billion dollar casinos help the community and keep these children safer by contributing towards lights? (Im sure it would be a write off for them) There are some schools that go year round, and others that dont..Its hard to know when they are in session and when some are on their ‘breaks’. Just a sign along side the road does not catch drivers attention good enough. I have been so tempted to sit on a side street at some of these school zones and write down license plates of cars that go flying through. Im not sure if turning them into the police dept would help, but at least I would feel like Im trying to make a difference.
I chatted with one crossing guard right after he tried flagging down a speeding motorist on Fort Apache. Of course that driver was going so fast they didnt even see the guard!! He was so furious and I dont blame him as I was too!

If it were THEIR children crossing and they saw people speeding through, or if God forbid they get hit, Im sure they would have a different viewpoint…I dont have children attending school here, but am still very concerned about their safety!
