Officers say Antonio Gomes was leaving the Stratosphere parking garage when he pulled up to a curb and started to get out of his truck. As he opened the door and exited, a white SUV struck him.

The SUV fled the scene heading northbound on Fairfield. Gomes was transported to UMC Trauma in critical condition.

Police say they have found evidence that the SUV is a 2004 or 2005 white Lincoln Navigator. The vehicle should have moderate right front damage around the headlight area.

At about 6 a.m. Saturday morning, officers were responding to a stolen vehicle call at a 7/11 on Craig & Losee. While the officer was responding, he spotted the stolen car near Camino Al Norte and Craig.

The officer followed the car until backup arrived in the area. Officers then attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver sped away.

While running from the police, the driver lost control and struck a cement wall. The car then flipped onto its roof. Police say the driver was killed in the accident.

The North Las Vegas Police Major Crash Investigation Unit was called to the scene and are investigating the crash.

This weekend they’ll be focusing their efforts in the southwest part of the valley, looking for traffic and seat belt violations. Next weekend police will be patrolling the northwest part of town.

Police are specifically looking for teens who aren’t using their seat belts. They’re looking to reduce traffic deaths, specifically in the age group of 16-20-years-old.

According to the Nevada Department of Public Safety teens have higher fatality and injury rates in motor vehicle crashes than any other age group.

Police say the best way to prevent traffic injuries and deaths is through seat belt use.

Police say they’ll be looking for both drivers and passengers not wearing their seat belts and who drive while impaired. Officers will aggressively enforce seat belt laws with a no tolerance approach to violators.
