Pets Die, 3 People Overcome by Carbon Monoxide
Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Three people are hospitalized, including one woman in critical condition, after a car left running in a garage sent deadly carbon monoxide into several condominiums in northwest Las Vegas.

Fire spokesman Tim Szymanski (zim-ANN'-skee) says a dog and three cats died in the condo where the most seriously hurt woman was found after firefighters were called about 9:15 a.m. to the complex. Four other dogs were resuscitated.

Eleven people were evacuated from 16 neighboring condo units, including a mother and child who were taken to a hospital for treatment of what Szymanski says were not life-threatening injuries.

Szymanski says authorities found a car loaded with holiday presents had been left running in a closed garage in the condo building.

Police are investigating.

Rare Winter Weather for Las Vegas Valley
Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

It was a cold and snowy Monday for much of Southern Nevada with some neighborhoods looking more like they belonged in the Midwest than in the desert.

A blast of Arctic cold swept through Southern Nevada causing freezing temperatures and snowfall especially on the western side of the valley at Red Rock Canyon, Summerlin and Centennial Hills. Some neighborhoods unofficially received as much as four inches however it was not cold enough to snow in the resort corridor but it did rain.

According to police, there were numerous fender benders on the wet roads, but no serious injuries.

Heavier snow fell in the Mt. Charleston area causing problems for some motorists. The motorists headed up the mountain to see the snow and ended up getting stuck.

Chains or snow tires are now required on Lee Canyon Road and Kyle Canyon Road just above US 95 heading up to Mt. Charleston. There is a foot of new snow above the 4,000 foot level.

In addition, the California Highway Patrol and California Transportation Department closed the Cajon Pass between California and Nevada for a few hours Monday. It is now open but with possible CHP escorts.

Freezing temperatures are expected Monday night with a possible chance of rain and snow showers. There is also a possibility of snow on Wednesday.

The weather across the country has been causing some airline delays and cancellations. You can check with Flight Tracker for the latest information on flights.

Despite Economy, New Car Dealership Opens in Las Vegas
Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

Bill Heard Chevrolet could not survive in a bad economy and closed two Las Vegas locations in September. Now a new company is taking over one of those car dealerships.

Managers there are not only ready for business but they're hiring in this tough economy. The company says its priority in this economy are people. Vista Chevrolet is now Ed Bozarth Nevada #1 Chevrolet.

“Today's the first day. We're excited to be here. We're a bunch of small town people from topeka, kansas, but we really think that we can big service to this marketplace,” Kent Bozarth, Ed Bozarth Nevada #1 Chevrolet.

“The Bill Heard organization did go bankrupt, and we are purchasing the dealership through bankruptcy. That being said, good quality people and a good work ethic, we'd sure love to employ here,” said Bozarth.

Bozarth says one of his goals is to get people working as soon as possible and a paycheck by Christmas.

“Today is my first day back,” said William Lucid who worked for the old company. He's been in the car business for 15 years.

“Just extremely excited to get to work and glad to get back to work before Christmas.”

Todd Satterlee is a parts consultant and also relieved to have that steady paycheck again.

“In today's economy, it's tough, you know, and having a job to come to, it's a good feeling.”

Applications are being accepted and although some may have their concerns about the economy or problems in Detroit, Bozarth is confident the product he sells and the new community he will serve.

“We look at it as a time of opportunity as opposed to the opposite.”

Thieves Target Neighborhood Mailboxes
Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

Tough times have thieves targeting mailboxes and their contents around the Las Vegas Valley.

Postal officials say most thieves are looking for bank account information and credit card numbers. In some cases, the thieves are even taking the neighborhood boxes to sell for scrap metal.

Some apartment complex's have even had to put their mailboxes in a locked room to discourage thieves.

The post office is urging people to take every precaution they can this holiday.

“When it comes to outgoing mail, it's probably better to bring it to the post office and just mail it there instead of the outgoing slot in your box,” said U.S. Postal Inspector Luke Caggiano.

Stealing mail is a federal offense.

Station Casinos Suspends Payments to Employees Retirement Funds
Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

Station Casinos is joining companies around the nation that say they'll suspend matching contributions to employees' 401(k) retirement plans because of the economic downturn.

A Las Vegas Review-Journal survey found no other local casino companies going that route. But the Las Vegas Sun says company executives are calling it an option they might have to consider.

A Culinary union official says companies haven't approached the union about reducing retirement or employee benefits.
