Paul and Judy Polovina built their dream home in the northwest. It’s relaxing, their view is amazing, but lately not everything has been rosy.  “Our property value will go down at least 50-percent,” said Paul.

Not far from their home was the city’s proposed site near the 215 and Ann Road for a garbage transfer station.

“It’s going to blow garbage all over this place,” said Paul. Trash would have a short stay there before going to the landfill.

Paul and Judy joined hundreds of other northwest citizens who sounded off with a common echo, “Not in my backyard.” They packed a meeting room at Santa Fe Station Wednesday night and got the word they wanted to hear.

“The transfer station has been taken off the table,” said City Councilman Larry Brown.

The mood in the room changed. For Judy, that announcement literally was a blessing. For now, the Polovina’s are elated. They hope to enjoy home sweet home just as they intended, without a wasteland interfering with the beauty.

The proposed detention center administrative offices for the land have also been cut, but the group Citizens of the Northwest has another concern, the school district needs a place to store 600 school buses. That tract of land near 215 and Ann is now a strong possibility for that. Many fear that would add a lot of extra traffic to the area. That’s the next battle.
