Teen Accused in Deadly Shooting to Make Court Appearance
Thursday, February 28th, 2008

One of the teens jailed in the fatal shooting of a Las Vegas high school freshman is expected in court this morning.

Nineteen-year-old Ezekiel Williams could learn whether he will get bail. The state is fighting against releasing him from jail.

Williams and 16-year-old Gerald Q. Davison face murder and other charges in the Feb. 15 slaying of Christopher Privett.

As it turns out, Williams was arrested by North Las Vegas police six months ago on allegations that he had a gun in his car.

That's according to court records.

Police Step up Presence Near Schools
Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Las Vegas police scheduled a news conference Tuesday morning to address a recent rash of teen violence in the area.

Undersheriff Rod Jett discussed measures being taken to stem violence. He said he did not want this to be another news conference with rhetoric about a shooting and nothing happens. “I'm so sick and tired of that,” he said.

Jett said that Metro is redirecting more resources at or near schools and working closely with school police. He added that on Monday morning at 6 a.m., there were more than 30 additional officers stationed near schools and by Monday, March 3, there will be more than 50 police officers to beef up presence at local schools.

Jett said even though police will take these extra steps, it is still up to parents to engage with their children. He suggested parents inspect their children's bedrooms and backpacks.

The news conference came less than 24 hours after a Western High School sophomore was seriously wounded in a fight and shooting near a middle school west of downtown. Authorities reported that another student across town was wounded in the arm by a pellet shot, and shots were fired after school near another campus but no one was hit.

The shootings came less than two weeks after student Christopher Privett was shot and killed walking home from Palo Verde High School.

Another Palo Verde student, 16-year-old Gerald Q. Davison, and an 19-year-old, Ezekiel Williams, face murder charges in that case. Last Thursday, a man was wounded by gunfire at an apartment complex a short distance from Bonanza High School. Police said after that shooting that the victim and the suspected shooter were adult males with no connection to the high school.

The shooting happened near Alta and Town Center. Four people fled the scene after the deadly shooting. The violence unfolded after school let out. The victim, Christopher Privett, a 9th grader, was walking down the street with friends when he was allegedly shot by Davison in a passing car.

Clark County School Superintendent Walt Rulffes said the shooting begs the question of whether schools are safe. He said he believes they are still the safest place for children but there needs to be more parent and community involvement in what children are doing.

Heavy security greeted students at the school when they returned. There were seven extra school police officers and three Metro officers patrolling campus. Grief counselors were also on hand for students who wished to talk about the incident.

Gerald Davison, the 16-year-old in an adult jail smock. Next to him – 19-year-old Ezekiel Williams. Williams was driving the vehicle from where Davison is accused of shooting at a group of kids, hitting and killing 15-year-old Christopher Privett.

In a police report — Davison said Williams gave him the weapon. Williams denies it. But in court they stood side-by-side as Williams' mother sobbed.

“They came here looking for the American dream and all of a sudden the American dream has turned into a nightmare.” The Williams family's attorney, Brent Bryson says they came from Belize.

“He wasn't an honor student, but he graduated, he dabbled in and out of sports, he had jobs, he wasn't employed at the time. His mother works for the RJ as head of security,” said Bryson.

Bryson wouldn't say where things went wrong but did say Williams met the younger Davison at Cimarron High School and says now they are getting threats.

“Some of them are pretty outrageous, calling the kids terrorists and saying they should be lynched.” Bryson is calling for everyone to take a deep breath and wait for the facts. Facts he says even the D.A. doesn't have yet.

“We show up and start talking about bail issues, and the D.A. stands up and says we are not ready to go, we need more time.”

“this is a situation where there really are no winners, their lives will never be the same no matter what happens from this point forward.”

The judge said Davison won't get bail. But Williams still could. Authorities still need to interview him to determine if he's a flight risk. Williams is expected to be back in court on Monday.

In the police report, Davison said Williams handed him the gun. He is very specific. He says Williams handed him the gun and said, “Are you gonna do it, you gonna get at them.”

Williams' attorney says he's going to plead not guilty to the accessory to murder charges.

More Details Revealed in the Palo Verde Shooting
Thursday, February 21st, 2008

Eyewitness News has uncovered new information about the shooting outside Palo Verde High School last Friday.

Fifteen-year-old Chris Privett was killed in a drive-by shooting. Ezekiel Williams was the alleged driver during that shooting.

In an arrest report obtained by Eyewitness News, Williams admits to police he tried to hide the gun immediately after the shooting, plus get rid of other key evidence.

Nineteen-year-old Williams was arrested earlier this week on one count of accessory to murder and three counts of accessory to attempted murder. In the report, Williams admits to police that he tried to clean up some of the evidence after 16-year-old Gerald Davison allegedly fired the gun from inside the car.

Williams also told police that he put the car's floor mats in the trunk and wiped down the interior of the car with bleach to get rid of any gun residue. He also admitted to throwing out a bullet casing. A friend of Williams was then given the gun and asked to clean it. Williams attorney Brent Bryson says he hasn't read the police report, but needs to make sure it's correct.

According to the arrest report for 16-year-old Gerald Davison, one of the girls who was riding in the car with Davison and the driver, 19-year-old Ezekiel Williams, said there had been an altercation between her and the group of students including Privett. She claims the group threw gang signs at her.

The report also says that when Davison was interviewed by police, he confessed to shooting at the victims, but said his intention was to scare them after the altercation in front of the school. The pistol used in the shooting was a .22 caliber Luger. The report does not say where the Davison obtained the gun.

Privett, whose funeral is Thursday, was shot as he walked home from school on Feb. 15. The bullet passed through his friend's backpack before striking him in the chest. Two people driving by who saw Privett on the ground stopped and performed CPR until an ambulance arrived. Privett was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Eyewitness News has learned that Davison, who was arrested over the weekend, was moved from the Juvenile Detention Center to the Clark County Detention Center. He will be charged as an adult for murder and attempted murder.

“We are going to treat this defendant just like we treat other people who are in there for murder,” said District Attorney David Roger.

Williams, who was arrested Tuesday, is charged with one count of accessory to murder and three counts of accessory to attempted murder.

“There was an attempt on his part to remove some evidence we later recovered and statements we received from witnesses give us the feeling that he was a party to the crime,” said Sheriff Doug Gillespie.

The suspected gunman, 16-year-old Gerald Davison already faces charges of murder and attempted murder. Police say Davison opened fire on 15-year-old Chris Privett from the back seat of a car while Williams was driving.

The investigation is still ongoing, but police say they have no motive and it appears to be a random shooting.

As students returned to school extra security greeted grieving students Tuesday morning. Grief counselors were also on hand to help students cope with the loss of Privett.

And while Palo Verde students were forced to face the tough reality that their friend is gone. The teenage boy accused of gunning him down faced a judge early Tuesday.

In court, Gerald Davison's parents held on to his hand. He seemed upset and cried — an emotional day for the entire family.

“We don't know what goes on with these kids. All we can do is be there pray, that's really it. That's my nephew and I'm sorry,” said Davidson's aunt.

Clark County Schools Superintendent reassured parents that school is the safest place for their children.

“I've asked time and time, “What could we have done to prevent this?” and there aren't good concert answers,” said Superintendent Walt Rulffes.

The sheriff says parents should rest assured they are doing everything in their power to protect their children and their future. But he says first line of defense starts with parents at home.

“Look in the mirror. Are you interacting with your kids like you should be? Are you asking those questions? Are you walking in there rooms unexpected?” said Sheriff Doug Gillespie.

The sheriff also said that four other people were in the car at the time of the shooting. As the investigation continues those, teens could also face charges in connection with the shooting.

Family members held back tears as Davison walked into the courtroom. He is charged with one count of murder and three counts of attempted murder. Davison's parents sat next to their son throughout the proceeding and even held his hand.

Because of his age, the judge did not allow Eyewitness News to show his face in court, but Davison was obviously upset. Eyewitness News did obtain a photo of Davison from his freshman year at Cimarron Memorial High School, where he attended before going to Palo Verde High School.

Davison's father asked the judge if they would consider letting the teen stay at the Juvenile Detention Center but the judge said that would be up to a justice of the peace to decide.

Davison's parents did give him a hug good-bye as they left the court and expressed sympathy for the victim and his family.

“All we can say is he's a good boy. All we can say is we are sorry right now.”

The District Attorney's office has not said when they will be putting in their paperwork to have Davison transported to the detention center, but the judge's office expects it to be sometime this week.

School Superintendent Addresses Student Shooting
Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

Clark County School Superintendent Walt Rulffes said the shooting begs the question of whether schools are safe. He said he believes they are still the safest place for children but there needs to be more parent and community involvement in what children are doing.

Rulffes, Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie and the school principal addressed the media asking for the public to be more involved in their schools, especially parents. They say parents need to be involved in their kid's activites and friends and need to talk daily with their children about what is going on in their lives. They are also encouraging students to talk with school officials.

Fifteen-year-old Christopher Privett was shot in the chest as he walked home from school on Friday. A sophomore has been arrested in the murder. He appeared in court this morning. It was an emotional first appearance as the boy and his family cried. Police say they still do not have a motive and it appears this is a random act. The gun has not been recovered.

For the first time since the shooting, students on their way to school Tuesday morning, passed the site of where Privett was shot. The site has become a growing memorial of flowers and candles.

“Really sad, I couldn't imagine what it would be like to be here after school when it happened,” said Amanda, a Palo Verde student. She was one of many who brought flowers and wore a white shirt to remember their former classmate. “He is in a better place now,” she said.

Some parents, for the first time, are wondering if their children are safe. “I am very afraid for my daughter and I am already thinking of changing schools,” said Rose Novak, Palo Verde parent.

Heavy security greeted students at the school. There were seven extra school police officers and three Metro officers patrolling campus. Grief counselors are also on hand for students who wish to talk about the incident. School officials say attendance is normal.

“This is the world we live in. This stuff happens,” said Julie Chaffin, Palo Verde parent.

Privett's funeral is Thursday from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. at the Palm Mortuary at Buffalo and Cheyenne. The visitation will be Thursday afternoon from 3 p.m. - 6 p.m.
