Woman Involved in Pacman Jones Vegas Fight Found Dead
Thursday, June 19th, 2008

A woman who was on probation in connection with a fight at a Las Vegas strip club over the 2007 NBA All-Star Weekend has died.

In February of 2007, a melee broke out inside the Minxx Strip Club.

Authorities say Sadia Morrison was with NFL player Adam “Pacman” Jones, who they say started the fight. Bouncer Tom Urbanski was paralyzed in the aftermath when gunfire rang out.

Morrison later pleaded no contest to a felony battery charge and was serving a three year probation sentence. But Morrison suddenly died while in New York.

Details are slim, but friends and family think she was thrown off a building.

Airline Cuts, Gas Woes Making Vegas Tougher Ticket
Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

Sin City is facing hard times. Soaring fuel prices are forcing airlines to cut flights and jack up fares to this desert oasis. Road trips have become luxury travel with gasoline costing more than $4 a gallon.

And tourists who do make it to Las Vegas are spending less, leading casinos to offer deals just to keep them in their resorts.

“The overall economic uncertainty this country is facing … makes the outlook for the next several months very murky,” said Gary Thompson, spokesman for Harrah's Entertainment Inc., owner of seven Las Vegas casinos.

US Airways Group Inc. announced last week that it was cutting nearly half its Las Vegas flights as part of companywide belt-tightening. That will leave 74 US Airways flights per day by the end of the year, down from a peak of 141 in September 2007.

The result is more than 8,000 fewer seats available per day, compared to the 2007 peak, according to data from the Clark County Department of Aviation. US Airways was the second-largest carrier to Las Vegas behind Southwest Airlines.

“We've seen airlines increase and decrease service periodically. Clearly, never to this extent all at once,” said Alan Feldman, a spokesman for MGM Mirage Inc., which owns 10 casinos on the Las Vegas Strip and plans to open CityCenter next year.

The flight cuts are another hit in what is shaping up to be a rough year for Las Vegas casinos. Casino officials and industry analysts say the slump is a result of economic complaints felt around the country — rising gas and food prices, home foreclosures and general uncertainty.

“As far as filling the rooms, the lack of airline service I think is going to have an impact on the entire community,” Thompson said.

Nightly room prices were down 4 percent in Las Vegas compared to one year ago and gambling revenue was down 3.7 percent, according to data through April from the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority. Total airline passengers through April were down 1.8-percent and traffic from California was down 4.8 percent.

Feldman said MGM Mirage has put together programs to entice visitors, wooing them with package deals, free nights and vouchers for show tickets and food.

With the airline industry expected to lose $2.3 billion this year, airline industry analyst Robert Mann said it may be up to big casinos to subsidize travel into Vegas, by land and by air.

“There's such an interest among hoteliers for arrivals that you may see more charter flying going back into Las Vegas,” he said. But the gambling industry in Las Vegas and Atlantic City is bracing for a hit this year, too.

Nevada will see revenues dip this year and next year, to $12.4 billion in 2009 compared to $12.8 billion in 2007, according to a forecast of worldwide gambling released Wednesday by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP.

The financial consulting company said it expects Nevada to rebound in 2010 and see gambling revenue grow to $14.8 billion in 2012.

“It's going to take a little while for the market to right itself, but I do think that that's what will happen,” Feldman said.

NFL’s Javon Walker Makes Statement About Las Vegas Attack
Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

NFL player Javon Walker is speaking out about his attack not far from the Strip. A celebrity gossip website – TheDirty.com — says he reported this statement to them.

“I was just back at my room and at about 5:30 in the morning. I got a knock at the door. I opened it and three guys with guns were there. They cracked me in the head a few times, knocking me unconscious.

“They then robbed me of everything I had – my watch, money, everything! Somehow they got me to a car and dropped me off in the street. That's what happened.”

Walker is seen in pictures on the left from SpyOnVegas.com spraying champagne into the crowd.

Metro tells Eyewitness News that Walker has a concussion and major trauma to his eye.

They're reviewing surveillance video from several locations in hopes of tracking down the suspects.

Oakland’s Javon Walker Hospitalized in Las Vegas
Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Oakland Raiders wide receiver Javon Walker is in the hospital here in Las Vegas after he was attacked and robbed near the Las Vegas Strip. He's been at Sunrise Hospital since early Monday morning.

Police said Walker had jewelry worth $100,000 when he was robbed, and about $3,000 worth of cash. They did speak briefly with Walker, and he had a mild concussion. But they have only started to piece together what landed him at the Sunrise Trauma unit Monday morning. Police have retraced his steps and have surveillance video of the suspects from various sources.

It started with what Javon Walker seems to be known for – dousing crowds with champagne. A video posted on YouTube claims he was doing it two weeks ago.

The Review-Journal reports he was doing this Saturday at Tryst too. And then again on Sunday night, according to the Spy on Vegas website, spraying a crowd with Dom Perignon from his private booth sporting a gigantic diamond watch.

But Monday around 7:00 a.m., the 29-year-old was found bleeding and unconscious on a sidewalk near Winnick and Koval. Police say the football star had significant injuries and was missing a large amount of cash and jewelry.

Walker was a first round pick with the Packers in 2001, then played for the Broncos until he was released in February. Three months ago he signed a $55 million, six-year deal with the Oakland Raiders.

For now he remains at the hospital. He reportedly has a broken eye socket, but police have only been able to confirm that he has facial injuries.

Police were speculating that he would be kept there for a 24-hour period. But they still haven't been able to do a thorough interview. They hope to do that Tuesday afternoon at the hospital.

Javon thought there were two suspects, but police have only seen one on that video.

Fatal Construction Accident at Echelon on Las Vegas Strip
Monday, June 16th, 2008

A Boyd Gaming spokesperson has confirmed that there was a fatal accident at the construction site for Echelon this morning around 7:21 a.m.

A 50-year-old male construction worker was removing some scaffolding; he was tied into the scaffolding when it pulled him down. He fell about 20 feet and died at the scene.

Boyd Gaming released the following statement:

“We were devastated to learn of the death of one of our colleagues this morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this very difficult time.

Worker safety is of paramount importance to the general contractor on the Echelon tower, Marnell Corrao Associates; the site's construction manager, Tishman Construction; and Echelon owner, Boyd Gaming Corporation. Our highest priority has always been to ensure a safe construction workplace, and we are deeply saddened by this tragedy.

We have halted all work for today at the Echelon site out of respect for our colleague and his family.

Marnell, Tishman and Boyd Gaming are cooperating fully with OSHA and all other appropriate agencies to determine the cause of this morning's accident. All of our site workers deserve the safest workplace possible. We will continue to take whatever measures are necessary to keep them safe as this project moves forward.”

Weekend Sees Rash of Pedestrian vs. Car Accidents
Monday, June 16th, 2008

A person hit by a car this morning is just the latest in a rash of pedestrian accidents. While that person was not seriously injured, it's the fourth accident where a person was hit by a car this weekend.

One third of the people killed this year on roads weren't driving at all. Even if you realize how dangerous it is to be out on the sidewalk, you don't really have much of a choice. Like the people who were on the sidewalk near the MGM – they were at the mercy of the traffic that passes by. So it's imperative that both walkers and drivers pay close attention.

One driver near the MGM plowed into a group of 10 people over the weekend and then fled the scene. Three other incidents over the weekend involved walkers not following the rules – mostly in the heavily pedestrian areas of downtown.

Trying to make this relationship between walkers and cars safer is tough.

“Here are a lot of people working to improve pedestrian safety so it's terribly disheartening if you are a pedestrian. You have to stop at every edge, every lane, to make sure the next lane will stop for you,” said Erin Breen, UNLV Pedestrian Advocate.

She says that it's important for drivers to remember that there will be more people taking the bus and riding bicycles now that gas prices have skyrocketed and that also means more people will be walking.

So keep an eye out. The next half of the year is typically more dangerous for pedestrians.
