It was a rude awakening Wednesday for two families in our valley as a truck plowed into their yards. It happened near Decatur and Ann Road.

The Mazda truck plowed two block walls. To give you an idea of the force of the impact there, a concrete block landed on the roof when the truck came crashing through.

Down on the ground is a trampoline that was crushed and a pillar was what stopped the vehicle before it could go crashing through the wall of a bedroom where a little girl was sleeping.

SLIDESHOW: Truck Plows Into 2 Yards

The curb, two block walls, trampoline, lawn furniture and the pillar were no match for the Mazda truck, crushing nearly everything in its path. The trampoline ended up on top of the truck.

It all happened just after 6 a.m. when most of the people who live there were sleeping.

Karen Mercado lives in the home. ”Big loud boom — like a bomb going off, like a crash – everyone was like just in confusion and scared and running toward the living room trying to see who's here, who's not,” she said.

Everyone turned out to be okay. The homeowner said the driver was not badly injured but was taken to the hospital for observation. The airbag did deploy — softening the impact for the driver.

The family had just improved the wall for privacy. Now they have a gaping hole in the wall that anyone can look through and walk into their back yard.

In all, we have had 13 cases of a vehicle crashing into a house, so more than two cars a month crash into houses. The first crash into a house this year involved a CAT bus. In the vast majority of cases, no one is hurt. Only two cases involved injuries where people went to the hospital.

Email your comments to Reporter Ky Plaskon.

Keeping kids safe and entertained during the summer isn't easy. But County Commissioner Lawrence Weekly is trying to change that. He provided sno-cones and water balloons to cool off some kids in North Las Vegas.

“A cool down is something these kids couldn't resist on this hot summer day,” said Weekly.

Jaeon Jones, age 6, is part of a summer camp program at a North Las Vegas recreation center. It's these campers who were treated to sno cones today thanks to Commissioner Lawrence Weekly.

Commissioner Weekly used sno cones, and even a little fun in the sun, like a water balloon toss as a creative way to remind kids about summer safety, reading during their break and helping their parents during tough economic times.

“I like keeping kids thinking and on their toes because these are some smart kids we're dealing with,” said Weekly.

And one of those smart kids is 10-year-old camper Alex Dockery. “We do different crafts and go on field trips, and we do gym stuff and play basketball.”

She was all ears as Commissioner Weekly shared tips like coupon clipping to save money.

“Kids want to help their parents. They want to do the right thing one of the things kids love is helping their parents, if these kids can help save a little money in their house, they feel like their contributing,” said Weekly.

A serious message and a sweet cool down meant smiles for the kids who sent their own special message to Commissioner Weekly.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you one thousand times,” said Dockery.

Commissioner Weekly says he will have more sno cone socials at other rec centers in his district throughout the summer.
Email your comments to Reporter Chris Saldana.

Copper thieves have hit again. For ten days now

Copper thieves have hit again. For ten days now, most of a North Las Vegas strip mall has been without air conditioning.

The signs say it all. The psychic has closed shop for now. She will tell your fortune from her home, where it's cool. Come next door and the copper crooks have cut a barber's business in half.

Customers at the Town and Country Barbershop have been calling all day, only to get a message saying the barbers can't compete with the heat.

Efren Guerra is the man behind the phone message. He has reason to be worried — having no AC has killed his business, “We stand to lose this business because we are at below 50-percent level, and that is hurting us very bad.”

The thieves came 10 days ago and yanked the copper from the cooling units.

“14 units were destroyed — completely totaled, gutted, cut, soldered. They knew what they were doing,” said Guerra.

The barbershop is not the only one working in intolerable temperatures. A couple doors down at the check cashing company, the copper theft has left Ryan Crowell sweating away, “It's sorta like a day at the beach without the water.”

The property management company has provided swamp coolers while repairs are being made, but the triple digit heat is just too much.

“In 32 years, this is the worst,” said Guerra.

Now faced with the worst financial crisis in his career of cutting hair, Guerra hopes the heat subsides soon. He's scaled back his hours with his shop suffering this sweltering summer because of copper thieves.

North Las Vegas Police are investigating. They have no leads on suspects, but if you have any information, call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555.

Email your comments to Reporter Aaron Drawhorn

Gas prices are going down and people in Las Veg

Gas prices are going down and people in Las Vegas are lining up to fill their tanks. Some are paying less than $4 a gallon for the first time in a long time. The price of regular gas is averaging $4.11 nationwide.

Here in Las Vegas, the average is slightly higher than that at $4.15. But that's down 13 cents from the record high average of $4.28 a gallon we hit in June.

Huey's Mart currently has the most inexpensive gas in the valley and is located near north Decatur and Vegas Blvd. While some gas stations have lowered their prices to $3.99 a gallon, Huey's Mart has gone one step further. They have lowered their prices to $3.89.

Of course, there is a long line – two lines actually – to get into the gas station. Motorists said even though there's a wait, it's worth it.

Each line was a good 15 cars deep earlier Monday, with some waiting 30 minutes to get their turn at the pump. One of the employees said the owner came in bright and early Monday morning, realized that other gas stations had dropped, so he wanted to drop his prices even more.

And they've managed to stay 10 cents below the average price during this gas crunch. Employees say the store is not losing money by doing this because people come inside to shop. And motorists never thought they'd be happy to pay $3.89.

“Eight times out of ten, yes they do go in and get some water, especially if they have kids in the car – they tend to go in as well,” said employee Tyheria Kindle.

“My sister and I laugh about it because we are like, oh my God it's $3.89 and we get excited about it, but at least you are,” said customer Camille Robinson.

The average price of gas in Las Vegas is $4.15. Experts say you may start to see more gas stations around the valley go to lower prices thanks to the drop in oil a few days ago but they're not sure how long it will last. In fact, the price of oil went back up Monday — over $131.00 per barrel.

As for these motorists, they say when you come out here you have to come with the right frame of mind, realizing you are going to wait. Of course, as more people are getting out of work, they expect this place to fill up even more.
Email your comments to Reporter Melissa Duran.

One boost to the local economy in Las Vega

One boost to the local economy in Las Vegas is coming in the form of two new casinos looking to hire thousands of employees. But will it be the shot in the arm the struggling economy needs?

Experts Eyewitness News spoke with said the 6,500 new jobs created on the Las Vegas Strip and off will be just a band aid for the struggling local economy.

Aliante Station will open in October at the north end of the valley creating 1,200 new jobs and in December Steve Wynn's Encore opens with 5,300 new employees. Both casinos are in the hiring process. To give you an idea of how sought after these jobs are, Encore is expecting 65,000 applications.

“For every job that we create in the travel and tourism sector, that creates an additional job elsewhere in the economy. So, if we have 6,000 - 7,000 jobs coming online with a project, that could multiply its way to a much larger number,” said Keith Schwer, UNLV professor.

Schwer says the Las Vegas recession started last fall and he doesn't expect these jobs to pull us out of it. He says an upswing will be seen when the national economy gets better.

We've all heard the bad news about layoffs, gas prices and the cost of everything going up. A bright spot has emerged thanks to two major casino companies. Between Wynn Las Vegas and Station Casinos, 6,500 new jobs will be filled by the end of this year.

The bulk of the jobs will come from the new expansion to the Wynn called Encore. It's Steve Wynn's second casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

On Monday, the casino will start filling 5,300 jobs, from security, to housekeeping, to managers.

Click here to apply for jobs at Encore

Station Casinos is hiring 1,200 people for their new Aliante Station Casino. Aliante started job interviews Wednesday. Bob McPeak was among the first to hopefully get a job in security, “I have retired from General Motors. I worked GM for 30 years. I have been retired for two years. I need to go back to work, especially with the economy and inflation.”

His pension check is not stretching the way it used too. Gas prices and the rising cost of everything else forced McPeak to retire from retirement, “It became almost an necessity.”

Click here to apply for jobs at Aliante Station

He is not alone. His application is along side people trying to move within the company, move from other casinos and job seekers right out of college.

“A lot of people with the gas prices now want to work in their own neighborhood,” said Vice President of Human Resources for Station Casinos Valerie Murzl.

The interviews Murzl started is something her Wynn Las Vegas counterpart is preparing for.

“The types of positions that we are looking to fill range from casino to retail, hotel, food and beverage,” said Vice President of Human Resources for Wynn Resorts Stephanie Rosol.

Wynn Las Vegas President Andrew Pascal says as other companies are downsizing, Wynn is expanding by 5,300 new jobs, “Indirectly that is going to create thousands of additional jobs in terms of all of the other support services for the resort. Absolutely it is going to help the economy overall.”

McPeak hopes that he is part of the economic help, because he needs the money to make ends meat.

The best way to apply for the jobs at Wynn Las Vegas or at Station Casinos is online. Vice Presidents for Human Resources at both resorts ask that applicants let the company prepare for the interview.

Wynn alone expects more than 65,000 applications.

Email your comments to Reporter Edward Lawrence

The Nevada unemployment rate is the highest it's been since May of 1994, so thousands of people are standing in line and filling out job applications. The new Aliante Station started taking applications last week and people got to come in an meet with recruiters today.

A lot of people we talked to wanted to change careers, get out of retirement or work closer to where they live.

That new casino opens its doors on November 11, but some of these applicants are hoping it'll open new doors for their careers.

Eddie Perkins found retirement wasn't as great as he thought. “Sitting in retirement wasn't as much to me as it was advertised. I've found that I need to work and stay busy, quality of life requires one to be active.”

“With the economy, I need to better myself and maybe to get into a wonderful corporation like this and be able to advance,” said Terri Wirthlin. She is a limo driver and was a bartender. Now she wants to change careers in the service industry.

And 2,000 current Station employees want to change locations because that's how many people have applied to work at this location. But Aliante station only has 1,200 jobs available.

On Sunday, Station Casinos will be interviewing for dealers, sports book writers and more administrative jobs.

It's the first evening rush hour on I-15, and the southbound lanes are squeezed down to just two lanes. Big rigs on the road are leaving some people catching their breath as the construction continues.

It has been a slow process getting through the area all day. There have been a lot of cars. But the trucks in the lanes are more noticeable because it's a tight space and they are very large.

Merging into two lanes on Interstate 15 southbound highlights just how much traffic travels through this area.

“Whether it is a sacrifice or not, it's a needed purpose,” said George Scott. He drives Interstate 15 south to his construction job. He knows the lane widths will not change — just the space on either side.

He also realizes with the truck traffic, the squeeze to two lanes can be frightening. “I personally don't get nervous because I have driven big trucks, but I know it can be scary and confusing with the trucks moving with the wind and the lanes getting small and smaller. It seems the world is getting smaller and smaller but it's not.”

It sure seems like it for Maria Garcia. She lives in North Las Vegas and uses Interstate 15 to get to the City Centre Cafe downtown. “When you went — all the traffic squeeze? Oh Yeah. Yeah. Too much.”

“It is the main lifeline through Las Vegas, especially in that area for points north,” said Nevada Department of Transportation spokesman, Bob McKenzie. He says they reached out to truckers to educate them about the construction.

“North Corridor Constructors, who are putting the project together along with Las Vegas Paving and NDOT – they have a public outreach team that is out talking with truckers and the Las Vegas Visitors and Convention Authority,” said McKenzie.

The team went to truck stops and talked with national trucking organizations. Scott knows trucks and cars will have to navigate these changes together.

“This city is at a point where we need to fix our old infrastructure and add to the new. And it all has to happen at some point,” he said.

So for now — go a little slower and leave extra time to safely navigate the construction. Think about this — if you speed through this area or cut a truck off, 188 trucks a day on the road here are carrying about 2,000 pounds of hazardous materials. So a serious accident here could have far reaching effects.

If you haven't found an alternate route yet or you want to see the details of the project, click here.

Email your comments to Reporter Edward Lawrence.
