NASCAR Week Hits Las Vegas
Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

NASCAR rolls into Las Vegas this weekend and fans are already setting up camp. It's amazing that some fans making a pit stop in Las Vegas for the weekend races are already here. They arrived Monday morning and the green flag for entrance into RV infield began waving at noon.

Fred Sanchez is here from Seattle, again, “Since they opened the track — every year.”

Oklahoman Jerri Chapman is a true sooner. She's here before the boomer, “We get an early jump. We go into town and spend money.”

Rick Krueger made a really long trip to be here – he's from Henderson, “We're here to see all of the pre-race festivities.”

Same game-plan for the Gilbert family — drop the RV, come back on Friday and root for Jeff Gordon.

A few reminders, the NASCAR hauler parade will be Thursday down the world famous Las Vegas Strip beginning at 10 a.m. The Sam's Town 300 nationwide race is Sunday. Lon Kruger will be the Grand Marshal. He gets to say those most famous four words in racing, “Gentlemen, start your engines.”

If you can't wait for the weekend, Friday is a busy day as well. It's pole day and gates open at 10:30 a.m. with lots of practicing. Qualifying begins at 3:40 p.m.

Calls for North Las Vegas Airport Restrictions Grow
Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Two members of the Nevada Legislature have joined the Clark County Commission in calling for a ban on experimental or home built aircraft at the North Las Vegas Airport.

Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford and Assemblywoman Marilyn Kirkpatrick say a deadly crash that killed three people last year highlights the safety concerns. They want the legislature to pass a resolution urging Congress to give the FAA the power to ban experimental planes.

The Clark County Director of Aviation wants to move the planes to a less populated area like the airport in Jean, but the FAA is resisting those efforts.

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

The North Las Vegas City Council has stripped its housing authority of a federal housing voucher program.

The housing authority has been accused of mismanaging federal funds and a recent audit found the agency didn't spend $800,000 on helping lower income people with housing issues.

Because of that, the Las Vegas Housing Authority will now handle vouchers for North Las Vegas.

Foreclosure Protection for Renters Proposed
Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

Some renters in the Las Vegas valley have found out the hard way that the home they are renting is in foreclosure.

“There is a possibility that your owner has stopped making payments, which was a huge shock, said Kina Foster, a concerned renter.

“When we moved into the condo, one of the things that we were really concerned about was renting from a private owner because of this fact.”

Often renters are only given a few days to vacate the property. Foster says it would cause a great hardship to try and pack her belongings on short notice.

Las Vegas Constable Bobby Gronauer helped push for the bill after his constables kept seeing renters surprised by eviction notices, “The way that the federal law is set up right now, the only person that has to be notified that there is a foreclosure is the owner of the property.”

Faced with her landlord's possible foreclosure, Foster began to looking for a home to buy, no longer counting on anyone else to pay the mortgage. Luckily, in her case, she had a few months to look, but that is not always the way it works.

10 steps to find out if your rental home is in foreclosure

“If they come to us and it is like a week until they have to be out, they're going to have to go to a hotel or a family member or find some way, because it is going to take at a minimum in most cases at least 30 days,” said Nick Nolf with Remax.

Nolf says he's received several panicked calls from renters looking to find a new home quickly. Giving them more time is the goal of a bill going before the legislature this session.

The bill would require law enforcement to serve a notice to renters as soon as the foreclosure process begins, giving them time to find a new home, “Figure out a way to protect that tenant that does pay their rent all the time, on time, and has no idea the house is in foreclosure.”

The constables both in Las Vegas and Henderson helped come up with the bill. They say these surprise evictions keep putting their constables in precarious positions and it would help everyone if renters were just given enough notice.

The constables worked on just one of several bills that are going before the legislature to address this problem. If passed, the bill will likely be in effect by the end of the year.
