Neighbors Mourn Murdered Pizza Deliver Driver
Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

North Las Vegas Police say robbery was the motive when 51-year-old John Norris was murdered while delivering pizzas Saturday night. Norris was a pizza delivery driver who worked for a Pizza Hut just miles away from the crime scene.

Norris was shot near Tropical and Clayton. When police arrived at the scene, they found Norris dead in the street. There are cards and flowers left in the spot where Norris was killed.

Norris' neighbor, Michael Lall, says he was a standup guy with no enemies, “His door was unlocked half the time. I could go in their and say what's up to him and same for him.”

On Saturday, neighbors heard gunshots going off in front of a house on Rose Sage Avenue. They came out and found Norris on the ground with several gunshot wounds and barely breathing.

They saw no car and no suspects. The house Norris was delivering pizza to has been vacant for years. Police are still chasing down leads and interviewing friends and colleagues.

Lall says Norris lived with his girlfriend and his 18-year-old daughter in an apartment. He says it's hard for them, but they're taking Norris' death in stride, “She's hanging in there too. She just came back to spend some time with him, and I really can't say what it's like for her though.”

Norris spent some time overseas in the military, but landed his pizza job when he moved from Chicago years ago. He never gave it up and worked two jobs to help pay the rent for his daughter and his live-in girlfriend.

Child Identified in North Las Vegas Drowning
Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

The second toddler in one week to die after being pulled from a backyard swimming pool. Both deaths are under investigation.

The two-year-old boy who drowned in a North Las Vegas swimming pool on Monday has been identified as Emmanuel Alfredo Macedo.

Although emergency responders were on the scene within two minutes for Macedo, it wasn't enough to save the boy. Police say these recent drownings should serve as a wake up call to the community.

“In the winter, people forget the pool is even back there so they tend to be less concerned about it,” said Officer Chrissie Coon, North Las Vegas Police Dept.

North Las Vegas police say several family members were at the home when Macedo fell into the pool and drowned. Last week, 18-month-old Jordan Williams died after he and another boy fell into a hot tub, next to a pool, in the backyard at a day care center. The three-year-old boy survived.

The Southern Nevada Health District says Las Vegas has made great strides in reducing drownings from an all time high of 14 deaths in 1998 to just four in 2004. But in recent years, the numbers are climbing back up and that has safety officials concerned.

The health district and Clark County Safe Kids plan to push for tougher pool safety laws and expanded public education programs in the upcoming legislative session.

North Las Vegas Finalizing Plans for Kiel Ranch
Thursday, January 15th, 2009

After decades of neglect, the City of North Las Vegas is moving ahead with plans to preserve Kiel Ranch.

Kiel ranch is home to perhaps the oldest building in Nevada and is regarded as the birthplace of modern civilization in the valley. The City of North Las Vegas took public input on three potential development plans.

Part of Kiel Ranch will be a historical site and part will be a normal park. The main concern for most of the people at the meeting was making sure there is enough historical preservation in the plans.

“I think they can try to keep the site accessible for an educational facility. I thought option one had a lot of trails and places our kids could go and learn about local history,” said Corrine Escobar with the Preservation Association of Clark County.

Thursday, the City of North Las Vegas will put the three potential plans on the website and have a link where the public can voice their opinion on which one they like best.
