Man Accused of Murdering Boy, 4, Appears in Court
Friday, December 28th, 2007

The man accused of murdering a 4-year-old boy and then trying to cover it up with a car accident was in court Friday morning. Trevor Carter and the boy's mother, Amber Scott, appeared for their arraignment.

It was supposed to be an arraignment, but neither side's attorneys were ready. Not much was said in court. The messages between this boyfriend and girlfriend were chilling.

It was a week ago Friday. A gruesome and suspicious scene in the desert of North Las Vegas led police to arrest Trevor Carter and his girlfriend Amber Scott.

Carter – accused of murdering a 4-year-old boy, both accused of child abuse. In court, Amber Scott arrived with Trevor Carter's family. They wouldn't comment at first.

Scott has been released on $40,000 bail, but Carter remains behind bars. From the moment Carter stepped into court, he tried to catch his former girlfriend's eye.

At times, he slowly looked up. But the mother of the child he is accused of killing stared straight ahead, never once looking in his direction. Scott left the courtroom without saying a word.

So we don't know what she thinks of Trevor Carter now.

“All anybody wants to do is make him out to be a demon, and he is not a demon,” said Carter's mom. “My son, he has had so many things go on in his life, he would never hurt a child. He is always the one who brought home stray cats and dogs,” she said.

For now, the two are being tried together because the alleged murder and abuse happened to the same child. But the public defender for Carter says that could change.

Amber Scott is seeking her own attorney. Scott might already have an attorney because she told Eyewitness News she was advised not to talk to the media by her attorney. That attorney might just want more time to build their case.

A new arraignment date is set for both of them on Jan. 3.

Carter is in protective custody, and the gray shirt he's wearing helps the jail to keep him separated from the other inmates who might be hostile toward people accused of child abuse or murder.

Out-of-Control Trailer Slams Into Bus Stop, Hits 3 People
Thursday, December 27th, 2007

An out of control trailer slammed into a bus stop Thursday morning, hitting three people. All are hospitalized — one with life threatening injuries.

Bus stops are really sturdy but it had to be removed after this accident. A trailer behind a truck somehow came loose, jumped the curb and slammed into the bus stop. At least three people were waiting for the bus there.

The driver stopped his truck on a side street and ran back to the bus stop where his trailer had stopped. There, all three people were hurt, one with severe life threatening injuries to the leg.

A friend of the driver told Eyewitness News that the driver, identified as Cedric Banks, actually knew one of the people who was hit.

“It was a freak accident. The trailer came loose, hit some people at the bus stop. He is a very nice guy, he knows a lot of the people – one of them that was involved in it was someone he knew. It makes it even worse,” said Samuel Toney, the driver's friend.

Police didn't take the driver into custody, but they said he will be cited for a myriad of charges including unsafe towing.

The driver wouldn't talk on-camera but he did tell Eyewitness News he wouldn't want this to happen to anyone.

North Las Vegas Fire Department Delivers Joy to Local Family
Monday, December 24th, 2007

Members of the North Las Vegas Fire Department rushed in Monday to a first alarm like no other. There was no fire — only hope.

The program called First Alarm was created to aid families that need a little help making Christmas more merry.

For the last six years, North Las Vegas firefighters have donated Christmas gifts to more than 10,000 needy kids. But every year one family gets the ultimate Christmas surprise.

North Las Vegas fire crews rushed to a Christmas Eve emergency. But instead of putting out flames, they had to ignite the Christmas spirit for a family in need.

“It isn't just a dollar spent but the joy that these children have – some of them wouldn't have had a Christmas if it weren't for this opportunity,” said Cedric Williams of the North Las Vegas Fire Department.

Just three months ago, Veronica Willis and her three children were homeless. “We were place to place, family member to family member,” she said.

Now she has a home and a job, but she still needed a miracle to pull off Christmas. On the night before Christmas, the North Las Vegas Fire Department answered the call for help.

“It was a blessing and if it wasn't for them, my kids would have had a Christmas but not the Christmas they are going to have now,” said Veronica. “It helps me out tremendously.”

Michael Douglass, a neighbor said, ”To wake up and see your local fire department over here to shine some light on a dark situation – it's really enlightening.”

The fire crew brought holiday cheer to the Willis family and extra gifts for their neighborhood friends.

“The tears of joy and excitement – it's something that we will never forget. I wish it was something that each one of our sponsors were able to partake,” said Williams.

Those sponsors by the way included their local union, the Burn Foundation, and the public which donated gifts.

Disturbing Details in Death of 4-Year-old Boy
Friday, December 21st, 2007

Eyewitness News has uncovered new information in the murder case involving 4-year-old Trenton Quick, the little boy police say died as a result of child abuse.

North Las Vegas police arrested the little boy's mom, 24-year-old Amber Scott and her boyfriend 21-year-old Trevor Carter, in connection with the death. Both made their first appearance in court Friday via video. Carter, who is charged with murder, was denied bail. Scott's bail was set at $40,000. She is charged with abuse and neglect.

Details of the child abuse have not been released, but coworkers and family members of Scott say they are positive 4-year-old Trenton did not die in the car accident that police say Trevor Carter staged.

In the hours following the bail hearing, Amber Scott made a call to coworkers, who talked with Eyewitness News.

Family members and coworkers say Trenton had an accident in his pants early Tuesday morning and Trevor Carter, who goes by the nickname TJ was not happy. They say Amber, how was at work, talked with Trenton on the phone.

“She could hear TJ screaming in the background and saying 'I'm not putting up with your kid (expletive) in his pants anymore. He's 4-years-old. He's a little old to be doing this.' Amber said 'just clean it up' and 'I'll take care of it when I get home,'”kathryn Averitt, coworker.

Scott's coworker says the little boy then told his mom he got “whooped real bad.” The coworker says not too long after that phone call, Amber Scott got another call at work about a car accident in North Las Vegas and that her little boy was dead.

The two other children who were living in the home are still in protective custody.

Bail Hearing for Mother of Dead 4-Year-old Boy
Friday, December 21st, 2007

The mother accused of neglecting and abusing her 4-year-old son was in court for a bail hearing Friday morning.

A North Las Vegas judge set Amber Scott's bail at $40,000 and denied bail for her boyfriend, 21-year-old Trevor Carter, who is charged with first degree murder. Police believe Carter staged a car accident to cover up the real cause of 4-year-old Trenton Quick's death.

The coronor reports that the child died from blunt force trauma to his abdomen as a result of abuse.

Police found Carter's car in the desert on Tuesday and Trenton was dead at the scene. Carter told police that the boy had died in an off-road accident but police became suspicious when the story didn't add up.

Arrests Made in 4-Year-Old’s Death
Thursday, December 20th, 2007

The suspicious death of 4-year-old boy is now a murder investigation. Initially, police were told the boy died in a car accident. But police now believe Trenton Quick's mother and her boyfriend are responsible.

Police believe child abuse had been an ongonig problem in the home.

It started out as a fatal car accident in the desert off the 215 near Losee. A 4-year-old boy was found dead after the driver of a small white car claimed he lost control. Now police believe their original suspicions on this death were right.

Sean Walker, of North Las Vegas police department said, “We believe the driver of that car, Trevor Carter, actually staged that accident in an effort to cover up abuse that was suffered by the deceased.”

Trevor Carter, 21, was arrested on first degree murder and child abuse. Carter is not the boy's father, but the boyfriend of the boy's mother, 24-year-old Amber Scott, who was also arrested on three counts of child abuse and neglect.

Even though she wasn't in the car at the time, police believe she may have turned a blind eye to the abuse.

“I'm really not sure how big of a role she played in what took place. I think she at least knew that it was going on,” said Walker.

Scott's co-workers say Carter and Scott had been in a relationship for two years and lived with Scott's three children. Like police, they had their doubts when they heard the news.

“What is a child doing in the desert? What is a man doing with children in the desert for – why are they going to the desert,” said Myesha Coleman, a co-worker.

Coleman says she talked with Amber Scott on the phone shortly after the boy was found dead.

“She was just telling me her baby her baby was dead… was dead… said they found him dead at the site,” said Coleman.

“He was beautfiul. He was a beautiful little 4-year-old… innocent,” said Coleman.

But now, the two adults the 4-year-old saw everyday could be the very ones who hurt him most.

The two other children – a 3 and 6-year-old who lived in the home — are now in protective custody.

Student Arrested With Gun at Elementary School
Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

More tense moments at a school near near where six people were shot at a school bus stop last week. A Mojave High School student was arrested at an elementary school with what was thought to be a loaded gun.

It turned out the gun was a toy, but it still made a lot of people nervous.

The arrest was made at Gwendolyn Woolley Elementary School — that's near Walnut and Alexander where the bus stop shooting took place.

The investigation into Wednesday's incident started when a parent reported the student had what looked like a gun. Police responded and took the 15-year-old student into custody.

They say parents in that area have been much more vigilant since last week's shooting.

Gwendolyn Woolley Elementary School was locked down for a short time during the afternoon because of the incident.
