Residents in the northeast area of the Las Vegas Valley are without phone service while repair crews work on a transmitter that was damaged by an explosive device.
The outage is in the 3300 block of Theme, near East Desert Inn and Hollywood. Residents told police they heard an explosion around 3 a.m. Wednesday.
Metro, the FBI and ATF are on the scene investigating. Phone service is expected to be out until Wednesday evening.

I live near the intersection of Vegas Valley and Cabana Drive, which is about one mile from the scene. I heard this blast from my home, though it sounded somewhat distant.
Since around the 27th of December, I have heard other distant blasts in the early morning hours, between 01:00 and 04:00, at which time I leave for work. Sometimes two blasts within that time frame. They all sounded like they were coming from around that same area, possibly the undeveloped area to the east of the end of Desert Inn Road.
I only thought, “What the hell is that?” each time I heard it, until this news station aired the report of the telephone terminal being damaged by an explosive device, then I thought, “THAT’s what those blasts were!” So I e-mailed my statement to Metro. I have been contacted twice by them for any other details that I could provide.
The investigator only mentioned that others have heard the blasts, but didn’t go into detail, but it would surprise me if no one else has heard them since Dec. 27th, especially people who live closer to the area.
If you live near the area of the east end of Desert Inn Road, and have any information that you can share with Metro, I’m sure they would like to hear from you. Call 311, and they will connect you with the proper department.
