The shooting happened around 9:30 a.m. at Dr. Edna Makabenta’s office near Charleston and Rancho. Police say the gunman, 80-year-old Eliseo Santos, walked into an exam room and shot Dr. Makabenta in the head and then turned the gun on himself. He later died at UMC.

Santos was a long-time patient of the victim. Witnesses say that Santos never went to a doctor’s appointment without his wife, but on Monday morning, he was alone. Police did make contact with his wife and say she is okay.

Dr. Makabenta was selling her business and planning to retire to join her husband in the Philippines. She has two sons and a daughter.

Both victims were transported to UMC Trauma. 20-year-old Joseph Masi died from a gunshot wound to the head. 19-year-old Ronald Richards was treated and released.

Homicide Detectives were called to investigate. They found the two victims were being chased by a man with a gun driving a small white convertible. They fled to the area of Flamingo and I-215 where the man fired at Masi and Richards, striking both of them.

Richards and Masi then fled to the area of Tropicana and Ft. Apache, pulled behind a business and Richards was seen dropping a large bag into a dumpster before driving to the hospital.

The bag was recovered by police. Officers say it held large amounts marijuana and believe the shooting is drug related.

Richards was arrested for possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell and booked at the Clark County Detention Center after his release from UMC.

Police issued a warrant Jeffrey Yonck for murder with a deadly weapon and two counts of attempt murder with a deadly weapon. The car Yonck drove during the murder has been recovered. He is believed to have fled the Las Vegas area.

In the early morning hours of June 8, Metro Dispatch received several 911 calls reporting a shooting at Bob Baskin Park.

Police and medical personnel were dispatched to the scene and found 18-year-old David Miramontes in a vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound to his head and 19-year-old Chris Luscombe in the parking lot suffering from a gunshot wound to his torso.

Miramontes died at the scene as a result of the shooting. Luscombe was transported to UMC Trauma in critical condition. He died two weeks later.

Homicide detectives were called to the scene and learned that the victims were with friends at the park when a dark colored compact car, possibly a Toyota Scion, drove by and an occupant fired several rounds at the crowd. The motive is unknown but may be related to various arguments and fights that happened at several graduation parties in the southwest area of the valley.

Police say the car they are looking for is described as a two door Toyota Scion with a lower body kit, custom wheels, a loud exhaust and having a dark “chameleon-like” custom paint job which appears to change colors from different viewing angles.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at (702) 385-5555.
