April 12, 2009 — 900 Block of Magnolia Avenue

On the early morning of April 12, 2009, Metro Officer responded to a shots fired call on Magnolia Avenue. When officers arrived, they found 23-year-old Francisco Morales lying in a driveway dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

No other information has been released.

January 30, 2009 — 2400 South Jones

On the evening of January 30, 2009, Metro Police Dispatch got a 911 call from the owner of the Sahara Pawn Shop. The owner said he had shot a man who he believed was about to rob him.

When officers arrived, they found 21-year-old Thomas Cola suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to UMC Trauma where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Homicide Detectives were called to the scene and began conducting an investigation. Detectives placed the owner of the store under arrest and transported him to CCDC where he was booked for murder with a deadly weapon.

January 27, 2009 — 1700 Block of Adra Court

Police were called to a rental property after a landlord was told by a tenant that his roommate was dead in a closet. When officers arrived, they found 48-year-old Jon Moore dead inside the home from an apparent gunshot wound.

While officers were securing the scene, one of Moore’s roommates, 47-year-old Perry Danley, requested to be placed in handcuffs. The officer placed handcuffs on Danley and found a handgun in his waistband.

Danley later confessed to detectives of shooting Moore, placing Moore’s body in a blanket and then locking the body in a closet where it remained for two weeks.

Danley remains in police custody where he is awaiting trial.

January 12, 2009 — Charleston and Rancho

edna.jpgA Las Vegas doctor was murdered in her office Monday morning and Metro detectives are trying to figure out why she was killed.

The shooting happened around 9:30 a.m. at Dr. Edna Makabenta’s office near Charleston and Rancho. Police say the gunman, 80-year-old Eliseo Santos, walked into an exam room and shot Dr. Makabenta in the head and then turned the gun on himself. He later died at UMC.

Santos was a long-time patient of the victim. Witnesses say that Santos never went to a doctor’s appointment without his wife, but on Monday morning, he was alone. Police did make contact with his wife and say she is okay.

Dr. Makabenta was selling her business and planning to retire to join her husband in the Philippines. She has two sons and a daughter.

January 9, 2009 — 5500 Block of Reiter

On the night of January 9, 2009, Metro Officers were called to report of shots being fired near Smoke Ranch and Jones. When they arrived, they were directed to a house where they found 38-year-old Ernest Mitchell dead from several gunshot wounds.

According to witnesses, two African American men were seen running from the area wearing dark clothing and blue bandanas.

December 18, 2008 – 1800 Block of J Street

Monday, January 5th, 2009

On the night of December 18, Metro Officers responded to the 1800 block of J street after getting a call of a man shot in the area. Officers found 24-year-old Albert Cobb, Jr. dead inside an apartment.

Witnesses tell police Cobb was inside of his apartment with several other men when a fight ensued. One of the men involved in the fight pulled out a handgun and shot Cobb.

The men then fled the scene.

December 16, 2008 – Martin Luther King and Owens

On the morning of December 16, officers responded to the area of Martin Luther King and Owens after 48-year-old Michael McDaniels was shot while sitting in his vehicle in traffic.

Officers found McDaniels still in his car with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to University Medical Center where he later died.

According to witnesses, McDaniels was waiting to go west on Owens, when another man, also stuck in traffic, got out of a white Chevrolet Malibu, walked up to McDaniel’s car and fired multiple rounds into the drivers seat.

The suspect then calmly walked back to his vehicle and made a u-turn eastbound on Owens and fled the scene.

November 6, 2008 – 5100 Block of El Parque

Monday, January 5th, 2009

On November 6, 2008, Metro Officers responded to a violent domestic disturbance. When officers arrived, they discovered 54-year-old Victoria Whitmarsh dead inside from multiple stab wounds.

They also found a male subject who is believed to be the victims boyfriend. He was taken into custody after a brief struggle.

No other information has been released.

October 8, 2008 – 200 Block of Hinkle

Monday, October 13th, 2008

On the afternoon of October 8, Metro patrol officers responded to a 911 call of a person being stabbed. When officers arrived, they found 17-year-old Richard Martinez suffering from a stab wound. He was transported to UMC where he later died.

Homicide detectives were called to conduct a follow-up investigation. Detectives learned that Martinez and the suspect, later identified as 16-year-old Steven Hogue, were involved in an argument when Steven pulled out a knife and stabbed Martinez several times.

An arrest warrant for murder with a deadly weapon was issued for Hogue.

Hogue surrendered at the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Plaza Desk on October 9, 2008. He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center.

August 19, 2008 – 3600 Block of El Conlon Avenue

On the morning of August 19, Metro Police responded to calls of a stabbing at the Sunrise Garden Apartments on the 3600 block of El Conlon Avenue.

Officers arrived and found 53-year-old Leo Chavez dead on the scene from multiple stab wounds. Homicide detectives were called and continue to investigate.

No other details have been released.
