On the night of February 18, 2009, Metro officers responded to a call from a female involved in a domestic dispute with her husband. The female said her husband, later identified as 30-year-old John Haines, was armed with a gun and was sitting outside the house.

When officers arrived, they saw Haines sitting near a car in front of the house armed with two handguns. An officer trained in crisis intervention attempted to negotiate with Haines for over 15 minutes. His attempts to convince Haines to drop both handguns were unsuccessful.

Police say Haines stood up and began moving towards his home where his wife and three-year-old child were inside. Fearing for the wife and child’s safety, officers shot and wounded Haines. He was transported to UMC Trauma where he underwent emergency surgery, but died several hours later.

On May 5 , Issac Hill’s five-month-old daughter was transported to the hospital, in what police say was extreme medical distress. She died from her injuries on May 8th, 2008.

An investigation by Metro’s Crimes Against Youth and Family Bureau found the victim had been left with her father earlier that day. During that time, she suffered injuries police say are consistent with child abuse. Officers issued an arrest warrant charging Hill with one count of murder by child abuse.

He was arrested by Reno Police and the FBI.
