May 3, 2009 — 4700 Block of East Boston

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

On the afternoon of May 3, 2009, Metro Officers responded to a fight at a house on east Boston Avenue. Officers found 62-year-old Marteza Mostafavi severely beaten at the home. Mostafavi was transported to Sunrise Hospital and later died.

Detectives quickly identified the suspect as 35-year-old Jonathan Vanhook. Vanhook and Mostafavi were involved in a dispute over money which lead to the fight.

Vanhook was taken into custody and was booked into the Clark County Detention Center for one count of murder.

May 3, 2009 — 2600 Block of South Nellis

On the morning of May 3, 2009, Metro Officers responded to a shooting at an apartment complex. When officers arrived, they found 14-year-old Jared Flemming in front of an apartment suffering multiple gunshot wounds. Flemming was transported to Sunrise Trauma Center where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Homicide detectives arrived on scene and learned that Flemming was having a birthday party at the complex. During the party, three uninvited teens arrived and one of them pulled a gun. Several people from the party began to run and the suspect started firing. Flemming was struck several times by gunfire.

At least one juvenile suspect has been arrested. Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 385-5555.

May 1, 2009 — 3200 Block of McLeod Avenue

On the evening of May 1, 2009, Metro Officers were called to a stabbing at an apartment complex. Officers arrived and found 24-year-old Thomas Minton Jr. suffering from multiple stab wounds. Minton was transported to Sunrise Trauma Center where he was later pronounced dead.

Detectives say Minton and 61-year-old James Peters got into an argument inside the apartment,  and Peters stabbed Minton. Peters was taken into custody at the scene and booked into the Clark County Detention Center for one count of murder with a deadly weapon.

April 24, 2009 — Sunrise Hospital

On the night of April 24, 2009, police were called to a domestic violence incident in the southeast part of Las Vegas. When officers arrived at the home, they found 38-year-old Patricia McCreery in the master bedroom suffering from multiple stab wounds to the chest and stomach. McCreery was transported to Sunrise Trauma Center where she later died.

Police say McCreery and her boyfriend,  45-year-old Clayton Wrencher, were separating after being together for 16 years. The couple became involved in an argument and Wrencher stabbed McCreery several times before fleeing the home.

April 10, 2009 — UMC Hospital

On the night of April 8nd, 2009, Metro Officers were called to a traffic accident involving a pedestrian in the 3900 block of E. Cheyenne. Police say 22-year-old Juan Mejia-Hernandez had been intentionally ran over after a road rage incident. Mejia-Hernandez was transported to the UMC Trauma Center for treatment. On April 10, 2009, Mejia-Hernandez died from his injuries.

Detectives say the suspect is an African-American man in his mid-thirties with short black hair, driving a gray Ford Focus or a similar compact car. The vehicle may have some damage to the front end or to the front drivers side.

April 6, 2009 — 4700 Block of Cessna Avenue

Police are investigating the shooting death of 18-year-old Jose Jimenez. Officers were called to the area of Craig and Puebla on the night of April 6, 2009, after getting calls of a shots fired and a man down in the area. When they arrived, they found Jimenez with a gunshot wound to the head.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. No other information has been released.

April 2, 2009 — 4800 Block of Stanley Avenue

On the night of April 2 , 2009, Metro Officers responded to reports of shots fired in the northeast area of Las Vegas. When officers arrived, they found 16-year-old Luis Bernabe laying on a sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds. Bernabe was transported to UMC where he later died.

Homicide investigators were called to the scene to interview witnesses. Investigators say they have no suspects.

March 5, 2009 — 1400 Block of East Reno

Metro Police detectives are investigating the shooting death of 84-year-old Sophie Jozwiak. Officers say Jozwiak’s daughter’s boyfriend, John Delong, shot her and then turned the gun on himself.

Delong survived the shooting and was booked for one count of murder with a deadly weapon.

February 20, 2009 — Beasley and Charleston

On the night of February 20, 2009, Metro officers responded to reports of shots fired at a large party, near Beasley and Charleston. Officers arrived and discovered two teens shot multiple times.

Both victims were rushed to UMC and where 16-year-old Aric Brill later died.

Homicide detectives began their investigation into the shooting. They learned that both victims were at the party when they were confronted by the suspect. According to witnesses, the suspect produced two handguns and shot both victims. As the second victim was on the ground, the suspect robbed him and then fled the area.

Witnesses say there were several members of various street gangs that had arrived at the party unannounced prior to the shooting.

February 15, 2009 — 4600 Block of Crystal Peak

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

On the afternoon of February 15, 2009, police responded to a shooting inside a home. Officers arrived at the scene and found 42-year-old Mark Vains dead in the back of the house from a single gunshot wound.

Homicide detectives were called and arrived learned that the homeowner had returned to the residence and was confronted by Vains when he entered the house. Vains was inside of the home and was burglarizing the residence when the homeowner arrived.

Vains was armed with a pellet gun and turned toward homeowner. The homeowner believed the pellet gun was real and fired one round striking Vains, killing him.

Police are still investigating.
