On the morning of May 29, 2003, Metro received a 911 call asking police to check the welfare of Mario Stein.

When officers arrived at his apartment, the door was locked. Officers got a key and entered the residence where they discovered the deceased body of Stein. Mr. Stein was lying on the bedroom floor covered with clothing and bedding.

The autopsy report says 28-year-old Stein had been stabbed at least 40 times. There were no signs of forced entry into his apartment.

On March 13, 1997, Ellen Bjurstrom was found unresponsive in her bed at the old Moulin Rouge Hotel by a friend. The friend ran to the manager’s office where emergency medical personnel and police where called. Patrol officers determined that Bjurstrom was dead.

Homicide detectives were called to the scene. Neighbors reported loud noises coming from the room the night prior.

The results of the autopsy revealed Wendy had died from strangulation. The person responsible for Ellen’s murder are still unknown.

On May 21, 1993, Sara Halsey was murdered during an apparent robbery in the parking lot of the Shark Club on 75 east Harmon.

Sara was a 20-year-old UNLV student and was outside the club with a friend when she was accosted by the passenger of a dark colored 1980’s Pontiac Trans Am or Chevrolet Camero.

The suspect asked Halsey for a cigarette. When Sara went to offer the cigarette, the suspect grabbed her purse. While struggling over the purse, the suspect shot Sara once in the chest.

She was transported to the hospital where she died.

Police are looking for three people involved in the shooting death of 18-year-old James Robert Williams.

Police say Williams was at Roadrunner Park near Boulder Highway and Racetrack Road on the night of July, 24, 2007. Williams got into a verbal exchange with the suspects and they began shooting at him. Williams was struck in the chest and died at the scene.

The suspects are described as three Hispanic males. Police have been unable to find any witnesses that got a clear view of the suspects but say they may have been driving a small, dark colored Honda or Hyundai.

On December 30, 1983, Diana Hanson was home for Christmas vacation from college, when she left her parent’s home off Desert Inn for her daily jog. Diana never came home.

Her parents reported her missing at approximately 6:00 p.m.

On December 31, 1983 a construction worker reported a dead body in the desert area near Spring Mountain and Buffalo. Diana was identified by her parents.

An extensive investigation was undertaken. It appears that the suspect abducted Diana somewhere along her route and drove her to the area where she was discovered.

Diana was sexually assaulted and murdered. There were signs of a struggle in the immediate area and Diana’s clothing was located near by.

In spite of the extensive investigation, no viable suspects have been identified.

On February 6, 1998, Cynthia Oquist’s body was found by a homeless person in a desert area southeast of Vegas Valley and the Las Vegas Wash. The homeless man went to a nearby store where he found a Metro Officer and reported his discovery.

Investigators arrived and began their investigation. Police say Cynthia had been left in the area for three to five days.

She was initially unidentified but identification was made by fingerprints at the time of the autopsy. The medical examiner determined the cause of death to be from blunt force trauma and strangulation.

Investigators learned that Cynthia was last seen in the downtown Las Vegas area working as a prostitute.

A suspect composite was provided by another prostitute who was the victim of an attempt murder. Investigators believe the suspect may be responsible for the murder of Cynthia.

On October 9, 2001, 9-year-old Hector Perez was shot and killed during a drive-by shooting.

Hector was sitting on the bleachers at the baseball field at Maslow Park, talking with a group of kids when the suspect vehicle, a black or purple Dodge Neon, drove through the parking lot. Witnesses said someone in the front passenger seat fired several gunshots at the group of kids on the bleachers.

After the chaos settled down, witnesses found Hector lying on the bleachers with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Hector was transported to the UMC Trauma were he was pronounced dead. The case was highlighted during an episode on America’s Most Wanted in December, 2001. To date there have been no tips which have helped to identify the suspect.

On June 25, 1981, Jack and Xenia Rabinowitsch were discovered dead inside their home. Both victims were found face down on the bed with their hands behind their backs.

They had been shot and the investigation characterized the deaths as an execution.

Police found several opened safes throughout the house, but money, jewelry and rare coins were still inside. There were also other items of great value appeared to have gone untouched.

One drawer from one of the safes was missing. Relatives indicated that the drawer contained some paperwork.

The Rabinowitschs were known for their anti-communist stance and for offering assistance to immigrants coming from the former Soviet Union.

Las Vegas detectives worked with agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation because of possible connections to other related investigations in other States.

On October 30, 1993, Elvis impersonator Dana Mackay and Mary Huffman were discovered shot to death by Las Vegas Metro Police officers.

The officers were asked to do a welfare check by a mutual friend. The friend had been unable to make contact with the couple for several days.

Apparently, Dana and Mary spent the day shopping and were returning to their home at 3624 Edmund, when they were confronted by the suspect, or suspects, as they entered the house.

It is believed that the couple walked in on a burglary in progress.
