February 20, 2009 — Beasley and Charleston

On the night of February 20, 2009, Metro officers responded to reports of shots fired at a large party, near Beasley and Charleston. Officers arrived and discovered two teens shot multiple times.

Both victims were rushed to UMC and where 16-year-old Aric Brill later died.

Homicide detectives began their investigation into the shooting. They learned that both victims were at the party when they were confronted by the suspect. According to witnesses, the suspect produced two handguns and shot both victims. As the second victim was on the ground, the suspect robbed him and then fled the area.

Witnesses say there were several members of various street gangs that had arrived at the party unannounced prior to the shooting.

February 20, 2009 — 6300 Block of Humus Ave

On the night of February 20, 2009, Metro Officers got a call that a man had stabbed his ex-wife. When officers arrived, they found 40-year-old Janet Nual at the scene with multiple stab wounds.

Nual was transported to UMC Trauma where she later died.

Police arrested Nual’s ex-husband, 50-year-old Edwin Magbanua, for one count of murder with a deadly weapon.

February 20, 2009 — 300 Block of Casa Norte Drive

On the morning of February 20, 2009, North Las Vegas Police Officers responded to an apartment on Casa Norte Drive after getting calls of a domestic disturbance. The caller said they saw a man had held a gun to a woman’s head inside the apartment.

Officers made brief contact with a man at the apartment door, but say the man retreated back inside and fired shots at them though a window. Several shots were heard coming from inside the apartment as officers took cover.

Police put up a perimeter around the apartment and called for help. A SWAT team, crisis negotiators, K9 units, and other personnel responded to the scene and patrol officers evacuated nearby apartments.

Just before 8:00 a.m., the SWAT team went inside the apartment to rescue the hostage and arrest the suspect. When they entered, the team found 23-year-old Crystal Klinkenberg and the suspect dead from gunshot wounds. Police believe the suspect shot Klinkenberg before turning the gun on himself.

February 19, 2009 — 7700 Block of Golden Talon

On the night of February 18, 2009, Metro officers responded to a call from a female involved in a domestic dispute with her husband. The female said her husband, later identified as 30-year-old John Haines, was armed with a gun and was sitting outside the house.

When officers arrived, they saw Haines sitting near a car in front of the house armed with two handguns. An officer trained in crisis intervention attempted to negotiate with Haines for over 15 minutes. His attempts to convince Haines to drop both handguns were unsuccessful.

Police say Haines stood up and began moving towards his home where his wife and three-year-old child were inside. Fearing for the wife and child’s safety, officers shot and wounded Haines. He was transported to UMC Trauma where he underwent emergency surgery, but died several hours later.

February 15, 2009 — 4600 Block of Crystal Peak

On the afternoon of February 15, 2009, police responded to a shooting inside a home. Officers arrived at the scene and found 42-year-old Mark Vains dead in the back of the house from a single gunshot wound.

Homicide detectives were called and arrived learned that the homeowner had returned to the residence and was confronted by Vains when he entered the house. Vains was inside of the home and was burglarizing the residence when the homeowner arrived.

Vains was armed with a pellet gun and turned toward homeowner. The homeowner believed the pellet gun was real and fired one round striking Vains, killing him.

Police are still investigating.

February 14, 2009 — Fremont and Maryland Parkway

On the morning of February 14, 2009, Metro Officers stopped 35-year-old Edmundo Del Valle for jaywalking across Fremont Street near Maryland Parkway. Police say Del Valle pulled out a large pistol and refused to follow the officers’ orders to drop the weapon.

Del Valle remained on the sidewalk in front of businesses Fremont Street brandishing his weapon. Officers continued to issue orders for Del Valle to drop his weapon, but he did not comply.

An officer trained in crisis intervention spoke with Del Valle in an attempt to negotiate his surrender. Several minutes later, Del Valle allegedly pointed his weapon at officers. Officers fired at Del Valle, incapacitating him.

Officers began to render aid and called for EMT’s. Del Valle was transported to UMC where doctors performed emergency lifesaving procedures, but Del Valle died from his injuries.

February 11, 2009 — Boulder Highway and Nellis

Violence erupted Wednesday night in a Walmart parking lot ending with one man stabbed to death.

Police say the 24- year-old Oscar Hernandez was stabbed in the leg and then run over by Jose Torres-Rodriguez. Police say the dispute began when Hernandez’s shopping cart hit Torres-Rodriguez’s car at the Walmart located at Boulder Highway and Nellis Boulevard.

Hernandez was transported to Sunrise Hospital where he later died.

February 5, 2009 — 4700 block of Del Sueno Drive.

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

On the night of February 5, 2009, Metro Officers responded to reports of a shooting on Del Sueno Drive in east Las Vegas. When officers arrived, they found three people shot — two of which were dead at the scene. The third victim was transported to Sunrise Hospital where she recovered from her injuries.

Homicide detectives responded to the scene and determined that 42-year-old Ricky Shadoan went to his estranged wife’s parent’s house on Del Sueno after he had been served divorce papers earlier in the day. Shadoan and his wife began arguing at the side of the home when Shadoan pulled out a gun and shot her in the chest.

After being shot, she ran to the back of the house where her father, 61-year-old Richard Green, pulled her inside. Shadoan was able to enter the home and continued to fire his weapon. He shot Green in the chest, killing him.

Shadoan then chased his wife and shot her at least four more times before eventually turning the weapon on himself.

The wife was able to flee to a neighbor’s residence where they summoned help.

The couple have two children who were in the residence at the time of the shooting. They were unharmed.

Both Shadoan and Green were found deceased at the scene.

February 1, 2009 — Twain and Swenson

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

On the evening of February 1, 2009, a 911 call was placed to Metro Police saying several people had been shot near Twain and Swenson. Patrol officers rushed to the scene and found three people in the road suffering from gunshot wounds.

EMT’s transported the three victims to Sunrise Hospital, where 28-year-old Atsku Takle died from his injuries.

Detectives learned the three victims were walking across the street when they were approached and shot.

February 1, 2009 — 3800 Block of East Sunset

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

Just after midnight on February 1, 2009, Metro Police got a call reporting that a man had been shot outside of the Olive Mediterranean Grill and Hooka Bar on Sunset Road.

When officers arrived, they found 21-year-old Brandon Gahagan suffering from a gunshot wound. EMT’s were called and pronounced Gahagan dead at the scene.

A second man drove himself to UMC and was treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. He said that he was shot outside the restaurant. A third man was transported to Sunrise Hospital with wounds relating to a fight. He was treated and released.

Detectives responded to the scene and determined that 23-year-old Carlos Orellana was suspected of shooting both men. Orellana was last seen fleeing the scene with a gun in a white 2008 Toyota car. He is considered armed and dangerous.
