January 30, 2009 — 2400 South Jones

On the evening of January 30, 2009, Metro Police Dispatch got a 911 call from the owner of the Sahara Pawn Shop. The owner said he had shot a man who he believed was about to rob him.

When officers arrived, they found 21-year-old Thomas Cola suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to UMC Trauma where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Homicide Detectives were called to the scene and began conducting an investigation. Detectives placed the owner of the store under arrest and transported him to CCDC where he was booked for murder with a deadly weapon.

January 28, 2009 — 5100 Block of Golden Avenue

Metro Officers responded to a call of multiple shots fired near Maryland and Tropicana. Once they arrived, they found 26-year-old Emanuel Bowie dead in an alleyway from multiple gunshot wounds.

Detectives determined that there was a dispute between Bowie and unknown suspects prior to the shooting. Detectives are still looking for witnesses and have no suspect descriptions at this time.

January 27, 2009 — 1700 Block of Adra Court

Police were called to a rental property after a landlord was told by a tenant that his roommate was dead in a closet. When officers arrived, they found 48-year-old Jon Moore dead inside the home from an apparent gunshot wound.

While officers were securing the scene, one of Moore’s roommates, 47-year-old Perry Danley, requested to be placed in handcuffs. The officer placed handcuffs on Danley and found a handgun in his waistband.

Danley later confessed to detectives of shooting Moore, placing Moore’s body in a blanket and then locking the body in a closet where it remained for two weeks.

Danley remains in police custody where he is awaiting trial.

January 24, 2009 — 5800 Block of Rose Sage Street

pizza_murder_suspect_180.jpgNorth Las Vegas Police Department received 911 calls reporting shots fired on Rose Sage Street. When officers arrived, they found 51-year-old John Norris lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds. He died at the scene.

Norris was a delivery man for Pizza Hut. The house he was delivering to had been vacant for several years, according to neighbors.

Police have released a sketch of a man seen in the area before the shooting. He is described as a black man with brown eyes, about 17 to 25-years-old and heavy set. He’s about five feet ten inches tall.

There is a $22,000 reward to find whoever is responsible for this crime. Pizza Hut, Meadow Gold Dairy and CrimeStoppers are offering the reward. If you have any information or saw the suspect, call CrimeStoppers at 385-5555.

January 24, 2009 — Ann and Revere

Just before 8:00 p.m., North Las Vegas Police stopped two suspects. Police say an argument ensued and the officer was forced to shoot and kill 18-year-old Tyrise Bell.

Police say Bell was armed and a weapon was recovered.

January 22, 2009 — 4500 Block of East Lake Mead

Metro Police Officers responded to the 4500 block of E. Lake Mead after getting calls of shots fired. Officers arrived on the scene and discovered three men shot inside an apartment. All three were transported to UMC, where 21-year-old Jorge Lopez-Ramierz was pronounced dead.

The remaining two victims were treated and released from the hospital.

Detectives have determined that there was a dispute at the apartment over some stereo
equipment that resulted in the shooting.

January 21, 2009 — 2300 Block of Bonanza

Metro Officers were sent to an area behind a shopping center after getting calls of a man shot. When they arrived, they found 60-year-old Jose Gonzalez-Chavez shot multiple times. He was transported to UMC where he died a short time later.

According to witnesses, an African American male and an African American female were seen fleeing the scene. No other details have been released.

January 14, 2009 — 5000 Block of Spyglass Hill

Metro Officers responded to an apartment complex on Spyglass Hill after getting a call from a citizen who said they went check the welfare of two friends, only to find them dead. 

When officers arrived, they entered the apartment and found 28-year-old Issac Jones and 21-year-old Amy Randall dead from gunshot wounds.

The investigation revealed that the pair had recently moved into the apartment. There are no suspects in this case.

January 12, 2009 — Charleston and Rancho

edna.jpgA Las Vegas doctor was murdered in her office Monday morning and Metro detectives are trying to figure out why she was killed.

The shooting happened around 9:30 a.m. at Dr. Edna Makabenta’s office near Charleston and Rancho. Police say the gunman, 80-year-old Eliseo Santos, walked into an exam room and shot Dr. Makabenta in the head and then turned the gun on himself. He later died at UMC.

Santos was a long-time patient of the victim. Witnesses say that Santos never went to a doctor’s appointment without his wife, but on Monday morning, he was alone. Police did make contact with his wife and say she is okay.

Dr. Makabenta was selling her business and planning to retire to join her husband in the Philippines. She has two sons and a daughter.

January 6, 2009 — UMC Hospital

In the early morning hours of August 25, 2008, EMT’s and police responded to a call of a man down at the intersection of Nellis and Sahara. When they arrived, they found 35-year-old Harold Polk suffering from a gunshot wound to his head.

Polk was transported to UMC where he was treated. He survived and remained in local hospitals until his death on January 6, 2009.

The Clark County Coroner’s Office determined that Polk’s death was the result of the gunshot wound and ruled his death a homicide.

Police say Mr. Polk appears to be homeless. He left a convenience store on Nellis and Sahara about a half hour before he was shot. He was wearing a black t-shirt with yellow printing saying, “I stood up for Skeeter,” and black pants. Shortly thereafter, Polk was discovered on the ground.
