June 29, 2008 - 2900 Block of Clifford Avenue
Monday, June 30th, 2008

In the early morning hours of June 29, Metro Officers responded to the 2900 block of Clifford Avenue after calls of a man being shot. When officers arrived, they found 24-year-old Eduardo Medina-Padilla lying in front of an apartment building dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

Homicide detectives were requested to investigate.

Detectives say the victim and his roommate had returned to their apartment when they observed a man they knew arguing with several other men at an apartment building across the street.

The victim went across the street to intervene in the argument and was shot by the suspect or suspects and killed. The suspects then fled the scene in a black four door Lincoln Town Car.

June 27, 2008 - 4400 Block of Stewart
Monday, June 30th, 2008

On the morning of June 27, Metro Police received a call from a man who said he had just returned home and found his wife dead. Officers responded to the house and found 61-year-old Otilia Soarez deceased from blunt force trauma the head. She was lying on a walkway leading to the backyard of the house.

Homicide Detectives were called to the scene and found that the victim and her husband were having repair work done to the house and had hired a day laborer.

The husband had left the residence to get supplies from the store and had left his wife and the day laborer at the residence while he was gone.

When he returned, his wife was dead and the day laborer gone.

32-year-old Yiorkis Pineda-Laurencio has been arrested and charged for this crime.

 
June 27, 2008 - 2300 Block of Sunrise
Friday, June 27th, 2008

In the early morning hours of June 27, Metro Police responded to a call of a man who had been shot in the alley behind apartments on Sunrise Avenue.

Officers and medical personnel discovered 25-year-old Paul Mendez, shot dead in the alley.

Witnesses reported that the victim had approached a large, white four door SUV with chrome rims when a person inside the vehicle fired several shots at the victim.

Homicide detectives are investigating.

June 12, 2008 - 1000 Block of Sierra Vista
Friday, June 13th, 2008

On the night of June 12, Metro Police Officers responded to an apartment complex on Sierra Vista near Cambridge after getting reports that a man had been shot. When police arrived, they found 32-year-old Roberto Simmon lying outside an apartment, dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

Police say a security officer working at the complex was responding to a loud music call at an apartment. As the guard knocked on the door, the deceased man attacked him. During the struggle, the officer fired one round, striking the man and killing him.

The investigation remains ongoing. At this time, no charges have been filed.

 
Cold Case - Sara Lynne Halsey
Thursday, June 12th, 2008

homicide_halsey.jpgOn May 21, 1993, Sara Halsey was murdered during an apparent robbery in the parking lot of the Shark Club on 75 east Harmon.

Sara was a 20-year-old UNLV student and was outside the club with a friend when she was accosted by the passenger of a dark colored 1980’s Pontiac Trans Am or Chevrolet Camero.

The suspect asked Halsey for a cigarette. When Sara went to offer the cigarette, the suspect grabbed her purse. While struggling over the purse, the suspect shot Sara once in the chest.


Metro Cold Case Detective George Sherwood talks about the crime.

She was transported to the hospital where she died.

June 5, 2008 - 7200 Block of West Mesa Vista
Monday, June 9th, 2008

ois_suspect_180.jpgOn the morning of June 5, Metro Police Officers responded to a call of shots fired at the Penthouse Gentlemen’s Club. Officers learned that the suspect, later identified as Dominic Nieto was driving a black Hummer H-3 and had fled the scene.

An officer in the area spotted the vehicle at Russell and Rainbow. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the suspect fled into a residential area. During the pursuit Nieto lost control of the vehicle and rolled into a desert area near Durango High School.

As Officer Blake Penny approached the vehicle, Nieto opened the driver’s side door, stood up and fired multiple rounds at him, striking him in the right leg. Penny returned fire at Nieto, hitting him. After firing shots at the officer, Nieto ducked back inside his vehicle and refused to come out. Officer Penny was rescued by other arriving units.

Since Nieto refused come out of his vehicle, the Metro SWAT Unit was called to the scene. SWAT was able to approach the vehicle, where they discovered Nieto deceased inside.

Officer Penny was transported to the hospital, where he underwent successful surgery and is recovering.

 
June 8, 2008 - 2800 Block of West Oakey
Monday, June 9th, 2008

In the early morning hours of June 8, Metro Dispatch received several 911 calls reporting a shooting at Bob Baskin Park.

Police and medical personnel were dispatched to the scene and found 18-year-old David Miramontes in a vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound to his head and 19-year-old Chris Luscombe in the parking lot suffering from a gunshot wound to his torso.

Miramontes died at the scene as a result of the shooting. Luscombe was transported to UMC Trauma in critical condition. He died two weeks later.

Homicide detectives were called to the scene and learned that the victims were with friends at the park when a dark colored compact car, possibly a Toyota Scion, drove by and an occupant fired several rounds at the crowd. The motive is unknown but may be related to various arguments and fights that happened at several graduation parties in the southwest area of the valley.

Police say the car they are looking for is described as a two door Toyota Scion with a lower body kit, custom wheels, a loud exhaust and having a dark “chameleon-like” custom paint job which appears to change colors from different viewing angles.

Police are investigating the shooting death of 31-year-old Adofo Thomas. No other details are avilable.

 
May 20, 2008 - 3300 Block of Frontier
Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

Police are investigating the shooting death of 53-year-old David Vargus.

Officers say a man went to Vargus’ house because he had not reported to work for three days. At the house, the man discovered Vargus dead from a gunshot wound. Police are still investigating.

 
May 12, 2008 - 1900 Block of Madagascar
Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

Police are investigating the death of 61-year-old Maria Graziose. Police say she was shot multiple times in the chest. No other information has been released.
