March 16 , 2008 – 1500 block of Living Desert Drive
On morning of March 16, Metro officers responded to a report that a man, wearing only underwear and a t-shirt, was knocking on the door of the caller’s house.
The caller reported the male was possibly armed and was asking for a female who was unknown within the house. The first arriving patrol officer observed the suspect standing near the citizen’s door.
As the officer exited his police car, the suspect ran at the officer with two large kitchen knives, one held in each hand. As this was occurring a second officer was arriving at the scene.
The primary officer began moving backwards while ordering the suspect, who was continuing to pursue the officer, to drop the knives. After retreating approximately 100 feet the first officer fired one round striking the suspect, who fell to the ground, dropping one of the two knifes.
The suspect ignored commands to drop the second knife and surrender, and as he stood up, still armed with a knife, the back-up officer fired two rounds, both of which struck the suspect.
The man, later identified as 37-year-old Daechull Chung, was transported to Sunrise Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
The citizen who originally requested Police assistance escaped injury in this incident.
