More Details Emerge in the Murder of Local Teacher
Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

A Henderson woman has come forward to defend her two sons who are charged with murdering a school teacher.

Henderson police say the teens murdered and robbed a 32-year-old Matthew Thomas Cox, a popular Basic High School music teacher.

Police say 18-year-old Jose A. Delatorre and his younger brother, 17-year-old Juan Enrique Aguirre faces murder charges in the death Cox.

Cox was found dead Monday in his house on Solitude Point Avenue, near Horizon Ridge Parkway and Gibson Road. Aguirre was a student in Cox's class. Police say they beat and choked Cox to death, and stole home electronics and Cox's vehicle.

Norma Sanchez, the mother of the teens, tells Eyewitness News that the teacher preyed on one of her sons and she says her son, Juan, recently shared some information with her.

“He told me he was having a sexual relationship with the teacher that the teacher was obsessed with him,” she said.

According to the police report, the teens told police they had only meant to rob Cox but ended up beating and choking him to death. Aguirre did tell police that Cox had started to get sexual with him while the teens were at Cox's home and that made him uncomfortable.

Aguirre told police that later that night, he and his brother beat and strangled Cox after he gave them a ride home.

Three Metro SWAT Officers Shot
Monday, December 29th, 2008

Three Metro Police SWAT officers are recovering after being shot Sunday night while serving a drug-related search warrant in Henderson. The shooting happened around 9:45 p.m. near Sunridge Heights and St. Rose Parkway.

The shooting left the neighborhood on lock down for several hours, keeping people from getting to and from their homes while police investigated.

The officers were taken to UMC with non-life-threatening injuries. Two of the three were treated and released while the third is scheduled to have surgery on his hand.

“Another example that this job of policing is dangerous and this is just a reminder to all of us of just how dangerous it is,” said Sheriff Doug Gilespie, Metro.

The gunman apparently fired shots at the officers from behind a closed door. The woman who lives in the house says her boyfriend of 10 years shot at the officers because they thought someone was trying to break into their home. She claims police gave no warning that they were coming into the house.

“All we hear is a bang, bang and boom. Never once did the police ring the doorbell, knock on the door, or use a loud speaker to say it was the police,” said the girlfriend who asked not to be identified.

She lives in the home along with her three children who are now in protective custody.

The male suspect was taken into custody.
