Survivor, 19, Of Drunk Driving Accident Arrested After Police Chase
Thursday, December 20th, 2007

A teenager who survived a deadly drunk driving accident is now behind bars. Colton Fredericks, who is now 19, was arrested after a car chase in Henderson — and police found beer in the car.

People are starting to ask, did this young man learn his lesson? Henderson police say they stopped 19-year-old Colton Fredericks with two 15-year-old friends. They all admitted to drinking alcohol.

Declaration of Arrest

And, police say Fredericks was driving more than 80 miles per hour. Those are details that come frighteningly close to the 2003 crash Fredericks survived, but took the lives of three friends.

The accident rocked a community. Three teenagers killed, their 16-year-old friend in juvenile detention for driving drunk. Colton Fredericks, known as Cody, survived. That was November 2003.

Now, Fredericks is in jail, facing several misdemeanor charges including reckless driving, minor in possession of liquor, and open container in a vehicle. Despite the allegations, one of Cody's friends came to his defense.

“I was upset because they're saying Cody, obviously he didn't learn his lesson and that's not true at all. He's very cautions when he's out and he's responsible,” said his friend, Marissa Coppinger.

But the police report indicates otherwise. Late Tuesday night, Henderson police say they saw Fredericks speeding southbound on Eastern in a 2007 Lexus. They put on their lights just as Fredericks turned left onto Serene.

Officers estimated Fredericks drove more than 80 miles per hour down a 25-miles-per-hour road.

Marissa Coppinger, Cody's friend, and the sister of one of the passengers, says Cody didn't know the police were behind him.

“My brother said that as soon as he saw the lights, he pointed it out to Cody,” said Coppinger. And that's when she says, Cody stopped. Officers found an 18 pack and a 12 pack of beer in the car and an open, half empty 40 ounce beer in the trunk.

All three boys admitted to having had alcohol earlier that evening. Marissa Coppinger says speeding was simply a lapse in judgment.

“Irresponsible but a lot of people can be irresponsible,” she said. “Anybody can be irresponsible two minutes out of the day. People are always irresponsible when they're not supposed to be but when it comes to drinking, that's what I'm talking about. He's very responsible, and he takes that very seriously.”

Marissa Coppinger, who is 21, said her mother told her to buy beer and bring it to her, in Anthem. It was Marissa's mother's car Cody was driving that night, so he and Marissa's brother could deliver the alcohol.

Las Vegas Student With Gun Arrested
Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

There were some scary moments Monday afternoon on a local campus. Police say a teenager brought a gun to the Southeast Career Technical Academy, The old VO-Tech High School, and now he's in serious trouble with the law.

The entire incident may have gone unnoticed had it not been for some observant campus security officers. They say the student was acting suspiciously so they investigated. After talking to the student, they searched his backpack and then made the disturbing discovery.

“Our staff members get a chance to see students five days a week, so they start knowing their habits. When a kid is not feeling well, when a kid is upset, the staff members know and they recognize this. In this particular case, not really sure exactly what he was doing that drew their attention, but their hunch was right,” said Lt. Ken Young with Clark County School District Police.

Police say it was a small caliber gun and unloaded but nonetheless, loaded or not, it is a still weapon.

The 16-year-old student has been taken to the juvenile detention center. He'll be charged with possession of a dangerous weapon on school property. He could also be expelled from school.

This is the 7th time a gun has been found on school grounds since classes began in August. This time last year, more than a dozen weapons had been confiscated.

Bait Car Program Helps Catch Thieves in Las Vegas
Thursday, December 6th, 2007

After gaining the reputation for being number one in the country for car thefts, every jurisdiction in the valley has stepped up its efforts and each has cut the number of car thefts by at least 10-percent.

They've got Metro, North Las Vegas, Henderson and NHP involved, and they say when you add them all together, virtually any make of car could be a bait car.

You just don't know and neither do the thieves. The cars are equipped with tracking devices and left in parking lots — left as bait. When a thief takes it, it alerts law enforcement.

Las Vegas is still number one in the country for auto thefts. And that doesn't sit well with Metro and the other police agencies here in the valley. The bait car program has been a success so far, but there's still a long way to go.

Breaking into a car… free. Finding your favorite rap station on the radio dial… also free. The shock on your face when you get busted by Metro police thanks to a rigged bait car?

Priceless.

Lt. Robert Duvall of Metro Auto Theft division said, “Now we can see the look on a crook who stole a car who realizes that he or she has been had.”

Metro says the popular bait car program is working, dropping thefts by nearly 15-percent across the county in the past year and a half. But sometimes the cars are real and the crooks get away.

Brian Filter runs an auto repair shop. He sees the end result of stolen cars – vehicles have been recovered, but they've been stripped, mangled and nearly destroyed — anything loose is gone in seconds.

“They'll jimmy anything they need to, to get that door open,” he said.

Filter says the county-wide crackdown is working. He's seeing fewer cars coming in. “They've dropped considerably.”

It used to be one to five cars a week. Now just one or two — a month. “It is slower. Much, much slower,” he said.

That means business at the body shop is worse when police do better at nabbing car thieves in the act. Police hope this programs puts crooks on notice.

“Clark County is no longer a place where you can steal cars without peril,” said Lt. Duvall.

But until that slow trickle of boosted autos slows down completely, Filter and his crew will keep repairing the damage — as Las Vegas tries to repair its image.
