It was a tough weekend for Hollywood. Manager/producer Bernie Brillstein died on Thursday at 77, actor/comedian Bernie Mac died on Saturday at age 50 and on Sunday, songwriter/musican Isaac Hayes died at 65.
Brillstein was famous for discovering talent like Jim Henson, John Belushi and Gilda Radner, being instrumental in “Saturday Night Live.” Mac was known for his own show, “The Bernie Mac Show” and for doing the remake of “Ocean’s Eleven” and its sequels. Hayes won both the Academy and Grammy awards for his “Theme From Shaft” but might be better known to kids these days at the school cook on “South Park.”
Hollywood is mourning the death of Golden Girl, Estelle Getty. Getty died Tuesday morning at her home in Hollywood. She had been out of the public spotlight for several years, suffering from advanced dimentia.
Estelle Getty had a long career but was most recently known for playing the sarcastic octogenarian, Sophia, on the hit TV show, “The Golden Girls.” She won two Emmy awards in that role. In truth, she was actually the youngest of the cast members on the show. Estelle Getty was 84.
It has been a rough week for the entertainment community with the loss of both George Carlin and Dody Goodman.
Carlin, who passed away Sunday night at 71, was known as a pioneer in comedy, especially for his “Seven Words You Can Never Say on TV” routine. In addition to his comedy, he was also an actor, having performed in movies like “The Prince of Tides” with Barbra Streisand.
Goodman, who was 93, was known for roles on TV in ”Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman” and on film, like the lovable assistant to the principal in, “Grease,” with John Travolta and Olivia Newton John and its sequel — and in the stage version.

The Emmy-winning star will be remembered for such TV programs as “The Carol Burnett Show” and films such as “Blazing Saddles.” Harvey Korman was 81.
According to the Associate Press, the Academy Award winner died Monday after losing his battle against cancer. Pollack won producing and directing Oscars for “Out of Africa” in 1985. His films are too numerous to mention but one of his most moving films to me was “The Way We Were.” He did an amazing job of telling a love story with a brave ending for a Hollywood film — the leading man and woman didn’t end up happily ever after.
