Girls Gone Wild Founder Hires New Nev. Lawyer

(Copywrite: AP) “Girls Gone Wild” founder Joe Francis, jailed for nearly a year in a tug-of-war between federal prosecutors in Nevada and state attorneys in Florida, has a new legal team he hopes can forge a truce for his release to prepare for his upcoming trial on federal tax charges.

Lawyers also filed a motion seeking to postpone Francis’ April trial on the tax charges until August, arguing he’s been unable to review more than 22,000 pages of evidence behind bars and assist in his defense.

A hearing on the motion is scheduled Friday.

Francis, who faces criminal charges in the Floriday panhandle for filming underage, bare-breasted women during spring break in 2003, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Reno last April on allegations of tax fraud.

While a federal magistrate has approved conditions for bail in the tax case, one sticking point is a requirement that he resolve the no-bail detainer against him in Florida.

That’s something Florida prosecutors have refused to do. As a consequence, Francis has remained in the Washoe County Jail.
