Nevada has felt the pinch of a $500 million shortfall but projections now push the Silver State’s budget deficit to around $900 million. That puts state agencies on edge as they wait to hear where the axe will fall.
Systems like the correctional facilities are saying they can’t handle any more cuts without putting safety on the line. The number crunching has been done and the cuts are going to hurt much more than first thought.
“The last several months have shown us a rather disturbing trend and it goes to show you that even the best laid plans can often go awry,” said Governor Jim Gibbons.
Gibbons says many state agencies will likely have to slash their budgets an additional 3-percent. That’s on top of the already announced 4.5-percent statewide cutbacks.
“Our state government cannot then turn to those people who are doing with less and suffering from the escalating cost of everything to reach deeper in their pocket and take more out so we don’t have to make those tough decisions,” said Gibbons.
We never should have elected him governor. He has been a disaster from the start. Absolutely no leadership — he has no idea how to handle this crisis.

The Smoking band, killed the Slot route business. Companies that maked hugh profits they paid taxes on the profits - lost money last year. NO taxes paid . . .
The bars lost business, the ability to serve food and revenue with the Smoking band, People lost jobs. NO taxes paid . . .
This is Sin city not California. Health is important, but if you not going to out law smoking altogether - leave it alone. It brings in tax money.
NO profit - no taxes paid. Go fig. You did it to yourselves.

Let’s stop housing illegal aliens in the jails, just deport them. We have Americans that can’t afford to eat, yet these people get “Three hots and a cot”. I’m tired of my tax dollars going to feed and house these people. It is a felony that they are even in this country.

Where is the rainy day fund? Why did we send everyone money back a few years ago and how did we get into such a mess in 1 year? Get rid of Gibbons, he was a mess from the beginning.

Maybe we should let Mayor Goodman become Gov., He surely “finds” money to revitalize that cesspool we call downtown.
