One of the reasons I left southern California 14 years ago was because of the earthquakes. (I was near the epicenter in the 71 Sylmar Quake, and about 70 miles away from the “big one” in January 1994 (can’t remember the name). Believe it or not, I have not yet felt an earthquake in Nevada - even though they have occurred. I was just looking at the fault map that was shown through this website though, and was a bit shocked to learn that I live very near a fault (at the base of Sunrise Mountain). I still am so happy to be a Nevada resident though.
Being From California, and have felt a couple earthquakes including the 1994 Northridge earthquake, Im pretty concern that the CCSD does not do earthquakes drills like they do in California. To Californians it was like learning the ABCs. I also have looked up the faults and we have a couple.. nothing may have happened in past years but who says we should not be prepared knowing of the faults..
With all said and done i ;think more awareness should be made for all ..
I was VERY surprised to hear my homeowners
insurance would reflect my close proximity to the
Nevada faults which encompass the Vegas valley area.
I was told by a USAA representative in 2004 (who
was also very surprised to learn where the faults
lay) that my new Aliante home would be affected by
the possibility of an earthquake. Our family toured
the Hoover Dam tunnels Monday (Presidents day)
and I photographed the “Earthquake Sensor Boxes”
placed throughout the interior of the Dam, which
states on their top:
“Earthquake Sensor - Do NOT Kick or Move”.
Our guide stressed the importance of NOT touching
the box. REESA has a VERY VALID point regarding the
CCSD lack of preparedness for our children. However,
I am NOT SURPRISED that CCSD (Which is ranked
7th LOWEST in the nation for school systems) does
NOT have an emergency plan implemented which entails
practice drills! My children NEVER practiced tornado
drills in Virginia Beach UNTIL 1994 when we had four
consecutive days of tornado warnings during school
dismissal. CUDOS to the VBCPS for JUMPING
into action and correcting a void in my children’s
lives involving safety. Now, every school in the
Virginia Beach City Public School system has an
emergency weather alert radio located in the main
office. It is tested every Wednesday at noon. It
is NOT TOO LATE for CCSD to correct the problem
in a proactive manner rather than a reactive reaction
after our children become a statistic on a national
news level!! In Virginia Beach we prepare for
hurricanes EVERY YEAR with fresh batteries, food,
water, etc. When my insurance company informed me I
would have to pay more on my NV homeowners premium
as a result of earthquakes, I modified my “Family
Emergency Preparedness Kit” (YES, I got this idea from
my close Mormon friend as they call it a 72 hour kit)
and inserted a whistle to alert rescue people to our
location. Our downstairs kit is kept under the stair
case next to a bathroom wall.
I am VERY CURIOUS if CCSD has a CODE WORD to
be broadcasted over the PA system in the event of a
possible school shooter - WHICH IS ALSO A VALID
ISSUE in every school across the country! The
code word NOT KNOWN BY STUDENTS (only staff
members and changed regularly) is broadcasted for
every employee to take action. In addition to normal
lockdown procedures, staff members clear the halls,
tape paper over door windows, make sure doors are
locked and keep the children secure and silent
while the drill/event is taking place. After the
drill, an “ALL CLEAR” codeword is broadcasted over
the PA system. IF the ALL CLEAR code word is NOT
broadcasted, it is (obviously) NOT a drill and ALL
actions NEED to STAY in PLACE until the police arrive
to clear out your designated area.
CCSD needs to take this opportunity to review all
implemented emergency guidelines and make revisions
where necessary.
My 14 year old daughter is NO LONGER a student in the
CCSD after LESS than one grading period for reasons
TOO numerous to list. I will be talking to her
private school principal next week to ensure my
daughter’s safety while in class regarding emergency
preparedness should an earthquake occur.
KLAS may want to investigate the CCSD emergency
procedures BEFORE a disaster happens. People
nation wide are still discussing Virginia Tech’s
lack of response due to measures NOT in place before
April 16, 2007!
