The hot summer could also be an expensive one. Record high electric rates are possible in the Las Vegas Valley, if state regulators approve Nevada Power’s request for an increase.
That could mean an 11.5-percent increase for the typical residential home.
What would you like to say to the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada?
Every six months Nevada power wants another rate increase. I’m always being told conserve, only buy new appliances, replace all my windows, use energy saving everthing. And so what happens, I do and here comes another rate increase. How much of a profit does Nevada Power make a year. All these new homes and such why don’t they kick in for the power equipment needed. I look at my bill and use less energy every month yet my bill never goes down. Plus its not like I have another power company to choose from.

I installed a new air conditioner in February, because my old one was running too many amps. I had $450.00 power bills last summer. When I installed my new air conditioner, I called Nevada Power and was told NO REBATE. Not unless I installed it in June. We are senior citizens with limited income, saved to put a new air conditioner in, and now no rebate, raised power rates. We’ll be out in the streets or living in the heat, because we can’t afford power bills.
Nevada Power must be stopped.
Thank you.

Stop making the “all the growth” sound like it is costing you out of your pocket! Any other business would welcome increased customer base (not that you don’t). Doesn’t more customers equate more income to cover “growth”? Isn’t convenient that “all the growth” happens during the summer months when southern Nevadan’s need electricity most? How do you sleep at night? I bet it is behind locked gates and with a gun under your pillow!

These rate increases have got to stop. Cut down on the profits of Nevada Power and remove the burden from our backs. It is bad enough we have to pay over $3.00 per gallon for gas but Nevada Power gets rate increase after rate increase after rate increase! STOP

This is ridiculous….what are they trying to do to us…put us on the streets. First the gas pricing for our cars are sky high and now this. its like working to pay bills only. What about our kids?????????
this is totally unreal

With the price of power per kilowatt hour being as high as it is already how does nevada power expect the seniors and low income families to pay for it? How about small business? I am aware of the payment program and the one time free be, but with the increase is it going to be feesable for all of Nevada Power customers to make timely monthly payments. I think Nevada Pwoer needs to take another look at thier rate increase plan again and realize it will not work for the customers that it will affect. It’s looks and sounds like Nevada Power isn’t looking out for the customers it service only thier own pocket books and bottom line. Maybe deregulation needs to be revisited to give the customers who pay for it another option.
Comment by Jennifer — April 24, 2007 @ 8:13 am
I think this rate hike is a bad idea.there have been to many of them and residents like myself just cannot afford it. each year it’s the same old story but that does not help those that just cannot afford it.
Comment by Miss Adrienne Miller — April 24, 2007 @ 9:33 am
i believe since ronald reagan deregulated
everything, the investors just get more
greedy every time you turn around. Las Vegas
is too expensive to live in now, people will
start leaving soon, then where will the
investors be, start looking at the salaries
of the ceo, cfo, etc, it is time for them
to think of the people who pay there salaries
and remember if no one is here, they won’t
have a salary to begin with. most people in the private sector haven’t even had a raise
in 3 years, we can not keep up with the rising prices, of utilies, gas and rent.

We desperately need another power company to come into Nevada to end Nevada Power’s monopoly. I’m tired of paying for their mistakes just because they over paid for power. Of course they always say it is for other reasons that they must ask for an increase. I think it’s time for Nevadans to seriously consider alternative power sources.

This is getting out of hand.
I know that Nevada Power is doing a lot better financially, and it needs to be capped off.
twice a year, the prices go up with them, and it is going to become impossible to survive with the raising of their prices.
The pucn is here to protect the consumer, not the utility.
HELP!!
Comment by Pam — April 24, 2007 @ 2:45 pm
I cannot conserve anymore energy than I already do. Our power bills are very high now. How do you expect people to pay such expensive rates? Las Vegas used to be affordable. I’ve lived here 25 years. It isn’t affordable now. The power rate increase must be stopped!
Comment by nan — April 24, 2007 @ 3:04 pm
Blame it on infrastructure. The more people move in, the more power they use, the more power the utility needs, the more they build. And of course they have to charge the ratepayer for it. You can’t really expect a power company to take a loss just so that we can have cheap electricity. Natural gas prices are also on the rise and that tends to lead the power market. Sorry folks, I don’t like it either but that’s business for you.
Comment by Sean — April 24, 2007 @ 3:38 pm
I have lived in this valley for 37 years and it is a yearly request from Nevada Power for an increase. I believe the stockholders are getting richer, while the average citizen has to struggle. They know we have to pay, or suffer with our summer heat. To bad there isn’t another utility company to give them a run for the dollar.
Comment by P. Harris — April 24, 2007 @ 3:44 pm
Are they crazy? Nevada Power is out of control and the pucn just keeps giving them more and more money. Maybe we need new people at the pucn and see if this stops the rate hikes. How much of a raise are the casinos getting? I haven’t seen a figure yet for them.
Comment by Sheila — April 24, 2007 @ 4:23 pm
I would like to know why no one ever brings up Southwest Gas, or LVVWD, or how the legislature wants to CONTINUOUSLY raise taxes (on gas)… Anyone remember last year SW Gas raised rates over 30%?, right before winter? And they have raised rates every year just like Nevada Power.
I get tired of hearing all the bad press about Nevada Power. Like they are the only one raising prices. Gas, Taxes, Water, Phone, Cable, Cellular, Food, etc…
And deregulation… Just look at what happened in California… The electric industry about fell apart there. Telephone services are dereg’d, and I sure don’t notice a difference there. When Centel/Sprint was the only game in town my bill was CHEAPER then, than it is now. Just because you have choices, does not mean they will be cheaper choices. And to top it off, the service sucks!!!
When I first signed on for service at Nevada Power I paid just over 6 cents a Kilowatt, today it is 10 cents. That is still under the national average and one of the lowest in the western US.
I say THANK YOU Nevada Power for keeping my lights on. You are (proven) one of the most reliable Utilities in the US.
Comment by Michelle Kelly — April 24, 2007 @ 4:31 pm
I cannot believe that Nevada Power needs another increase nor can I believe they wait until the hottest part of the year to post such an increase. If they were wise in their building, wise in their hiring, wise in their Receivables (which they show in all areas they are not), they would not need the increases. I strongly believe the Commission needs to send Nevada Power a message by denying this request. The rates are too high now.
Comment by Kim Hobbs — April 24, 2007 @ 4:44 pm
A utility company should be governed by the same rules as the customers they serve - if your bills are getting out of hand, cut back on something (like huge salaries of executives). I’m retired (but have two part time jobs in order to take care of daily expenses) and it makes me mad that I, and others in the same boat, have to suffer because the utility companies have monopolies and can pretty much raise rates at their whim. It is a disincentive to those companies to be more judicious in their purchases when they know we are at their mercy and they can raise rates any time they please.
Comment by ALLIE LAKEY — April 24, 2007 @ 4:57 pm
We did have another power company come in. Reliant no body wanted anything to do with them building around Red Rock.. And you know what??/It was no where near Red rock… We had our chance and blew it… Better luck next time!!

We are Senior Citizens living on a fixed income. We do not get an 11% annual increase in our income. We do not get a fat bonus for increasing the profits of a POWER Company. We have to cut back on medical expence, travel, food, clothing, even living. You pay off the inflated prices of the Enron fiasco. The only solution is switching to a PUBLIC POWER SYSTEM like the State of Nebraska. A one percent increase is way to much on top of the past increases. It has to stop now. You bite the bullet this time.
Comment by Richard Salmen — April 24, 2007 @ 5:32 pm
The Nevada Power Co. is out of control. They want a rate increase every six month. How much money the CEO or COO or CFO make a year or I should say every six month. They do not care about the public they just want their check every month. I spending less energy than last year and they want rate increase? this is a JOKE.
Comment by Raul — April 24, 2007 @ 9:23 pm
Nevada power should think about not only giving assistance to low- income families but also families on one income, our income is higher than the require for assistance so we do not quilify. That’s what Nevada Power has done to many families like us by raising rates twice a year is put us in financial ruins, especially during the hot months. It’s very hard when you are put in the position of having to pay your power bill or buying necesities that your family needs because if we’re late with our bill they are already threating us to shut off our service , so what can we do? Most families with incomes do not get two PAY RAISES per year so why should Nevada Power be permitted to do this to us the consumer. NEVADA POWER STOP RAISING THE RATES!!!!!
Comment by Marisol M. — April 24, 2007 @ 11:25 pm
This is just another example of price gouging by Nevada Power, its funny how this increase comes just before the summer. Reminds me of how the oil companies suddenly raise the price of gasoline before holiday weekends. My bill last summer was over $300 per month, I guess this is not enough money for them. How much will be enough, $400, $500 a month?
Comment by Paul — April 25, 2007 @ 8:18 am

Comment by Blackbird — April 25, 2007 @ 11:35 am
Not only is Nevada Power going up its gas, houses, insurance, food, cars. Does anyone realize we live in the desert we have to have AC turned on for the summer. We have to be more educated on energy conservation but people are to lazy to read on it. For the people that pay $300.00 or more on power well it was your choice to have a pool in your home so deal with it. For the low income people get a 2nd job.
Comment by gary — April 25, 2007 @ 3:31 pm
If we bring another Power company to Las Vegas it will not fix anything because Nevada Power ownes the poles and lines so we just need to conserve energy and be smarter with our power. At least we dont have black outs like California did
Comment by GARY — April 25, 2007 @ 3:49 pm
I agree with Paul - how convenient a “major” increase right before the heat of the summer. Same way Southwest Gas manages to get theirs in winter. How many more times do they feel they need to increase? Perhaps they should’ve studied a little more before building so much - - how much of the increase do the strip hotels, etc. have to absorb?
Comment by Mary — April 25, 2007 @ 3:53 pm
Nevada Power seems to be the only local utility that continuously asks for rate hikes, and their requests are always double digit increases. The other local utilities seem to be able to run their business in a responsible manner, which requires only occasional increases. The PUC needs to stand up to NV Power and tell them enough is enough. If the PUC is the “voice of the people” and finally tells NV Power no - we would all be surprised that they would actually find a way to run their business and to actually cut their costs.
Comment by joyce — April 25, 2007 @ 4:18 pm

ALWAYS,.. ALWAYS,ALWAYS so, don`t beat yourselves up thinking and worrying about it, just figure it to be eventually mission accomplished, Uncle Vegas give yourself a pat on the back, And if the little villagers don`t like the way that things are done here they can always feel free to move somewheres else…I personally love Las Vegas,Unconditionly and forever more

I, like so many others are suffering from Nevada Power’s rate hikes. Yes,about twice a year they are asking and getting their rate hikes. This is WORNG I don’t care what they say as an excuse, it is greed on their part. People who have a large income and can meet all their needs without struggling don’t worry about the hikes. But not every one in this state has a large income, and can not work 3 or 4 jobs just so the power company can get their pound of flesh. And yes I have done all the energy saving changes , it hasn’t changed the power bill, it’s still high. I have caught the meter readers not reading the meter and the power company charging a high bill. I have caught them many times doing this. I have called and told them so but it didn’t do any good. Out of desperation I started using their equal pay plan. But I still pay 265.00 a month every month. If I don’t use this then my power bill would be 500.00 a month for the next 5 months. My winter bills would be at least 180.00 a month. I like so many others are on the losing end with power co. NO , NO, NO they don’t need a rate hike. Some one with the power to stop them needs to do so. Their greed is hurting many people.
Comment by Charlotte — May 22, 2007 @ 5:26 pm
Why would anyone approve a rate hike for Nevada Power when they have just reported RECORD EARNINGS!!!! What are their reasons for needing a rate hike? Is it because they are just plain GREEDY???!!!

Wow. So many misinformed people. Do your research. If you want to keep your house at 70 degrees when it is 110 outside, then quit whining and pay for it. Everyone I’ve read posts from seems to want champagne but only have beer money. Conserve energy and your bills go down. Nevada Power’s rates are amongst the cheapest in the country. Even CalEdison complains it can’t resell it’s power to western Nevada because of Nevada Power/Sierra Pacific’s rates. Get real people. At least be informed before you post.

Oil Companies, Gas Company’s, Power Company’s next thing they’ll charge us is to breath the tainted air. Nevada Power is going to get the increase and be at another record high profit by gouging people because they are the only power company in Las Vegas and as long they have the political backing the prices will go up. It’s not about supply and demand, just like the gas prices and housing prices why should power be any different. It’s about a profit and executives will always go where they can make the money. What they don’t get is that consumers will cut back spending on other non essential items. Such as clothing, eating out, traveling/vacations, and any other non essential items. Causing those business to cut back or close their doors. People will then be a drain on our economy living on welfare. Fraud will rise, violence will explode as people turn desperate to survive. All of my family is here and I don’t want to leave. But to live here and pay for the necessities on what an average person gets paid is ridiculous. Don’t get me wrong I’m comfortable in what I’m making but when stupid rate hikes dip into what I’m putting in my savings or my retirement I get very upset. My husband and I were thinking about having kids but when you factor in the necessities of a third person for food, water, a place to live, the price of gas, power, health insurance and keeping a paid off car running, it’s difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I’m about numbers and when the numbers don’t work they don’t work. I think with everything going on in the US and the world we’re looking at not just a slow down of our economy but possibly a stalling effect and a windfall of people will lose their jobs and a major recession will set in. Did America not learn from the past? What kind of future will our children have, it’s scary to think that America turns it back on the little people who make America great and keep it going.

Frankly, if you do not vote everyone out of office who did not vehemently oppose this increase, then you deserve it.
The reason this doesn’t happen on the east coast is because people actually pay attention to the actions of their local legislators.
The IQ of the average Nevadan is probably not quite as high, and those in office here are pretty confident that they can do as they please without the public noticing.
What did YOUR local representative say about this increase?
This all also potentially runs afoul of anti-trust laws, but again, who is going to fight it?
The have monopolies in Russia, Iraq, and Cuba.
Supposedly our free market is what makes us superior.
Do you see a free market at play here?

I recharge the hot water when I get home then turn it off before I go to bed. The water is still hot when I shower before work so I don’t turn it on again until I get home the next day. The hot water heater is only on for a few hours. I have been trying to conserve as much as possible but, my bill for July is $143.00.
This is insane when someone is on a tight budget. I rarely cook and have no washing maching in the apartment. I need the air and hot water so what is one to do? Nevada Power is making record profits and a peasant like me is treading water just to stay afloat.

This year my bill has jumped to 150.00. What gives? When the water co. and power merged it was supposed to stop all these rate increases!! What gives? Now they want more in Oct. if this is allowed to go through I will have no power and have to go to candles. Enough is enough! I am self supporting and only make 6.15 an hr. Where is the money to come from to pay the higher rate of 2.00 extra a month. After paying all my bills I have 50.00 a month to eat on. Do I go hungry to give more to the power co? Many of us working folk and some retirement plans determine annual pay increases via a magic number called the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Wouldn’t it be grand to limit utilities rate increases to +/- 1% of the State/County’s last FY CPI.
An earlier poster mentioned the Pres. Reagan de-regulation mandates regarding Gas and Power.. Guess what, another conservative method of sucking more money from the pockets of the shrinking middle class and filling the coffers of the rich and ultra-rich.
If an 11% rate increase ups my Nevada Power Stock Dividends by 15%, I’m in!!! woohoo, poor power sucking low-life’s ha ha ha.
We’re not far from heading the direction of San Diego Ca, where home buyers must qualify not only for their mortgage but also the taxes and utilities they will be paying, which can cost 50% of what their monthly mortgage is. Rediculous.
And whomever says we still have the cheapest electric rates around is just being ignorant of the real context. It’s usage that’s the real issue. How many days a year in Santa Barbara will a typical homeowner try to cool their dwelling -20/-40 degrees from the high outside temperature?
In Southern Nevada that has been the real usage pattern for many many years.
The pool filter pump at my home now runs 30% less than I ran it 10 years ago, but costs 50% more to run and requires a lot of tiring manual hand-cleaning.
It’s a fact we live in the desert and we choose to. Electrical usage is higher than a coastal or cooler community, but to be raped for it is the problem. Swamp coolers… oh oh… water usage increase and pretty useless during monsoon season.
And watch out, Natural Gas hasn’t peaked yet. Out east, heating oil has gone up 800% in 20 years, Natural Gas is heading that way next.
And we haven’t even started talking about water? LVVWD Sr. Staff and Engineers know the real numbers, the real issues. Developers should’ve been hit with funding infrastructure over the last 15+ year boom. Not just bigger service connection related fees, but a significant contribution to the issue of water sources. But Mrs Mulroy could not be the one to pass that request to the County Commission, no, think of all the illicit contributions and bribes they would’ve lost.
Ever wonder who end’s up owning the prime highway/beltway off-ramp service stores… if you could ever dig through the piles of corporations and partnerships related to these land deals, it would not be a surpise the 20 or 30 people in the state who seem to have a “head’s up” and some sort of bureaucratic privilege of getting richer at the expense of ethics, morality and law.
Bottom line, no matter how you change your lifestyle. No matter how much “green” you add to your home, auto’s, etc, monopolistic utilities will ALWAYS end up making the profit they desire. We are a captive audience and have no where to run.
In the sense of households making less than $125,000/yr, no matter what you make, the visceral politico-economic structure of a flawed, greedy, corrupted system will always make it so that “whatever you make, that is what it’ll cost to live.” The majority of our children may never be able to own a home, or not one that is reasonable. Recent sub-prime greed has nailed that coffin, just like S&L’s did in the 80’s.
A machine that feeds on itself is what we are now living in. $400bn to Iraq, (Can you say OIL and Trans-continental NATURAL GAS pipe-line starting in Afghanistan), Retirees not being able to live a reasonable quality of life that they planned for, and payed into, years ago and have been lied to and stolen from. Don’t worry, many of us will be there one day.
Oh, did I mention Health care, Health Insurance, Medical profession PACs, partnerships, corporations, HMOs… and the other “quasi-monopolies”, the Pharmaceuticals giants.
Nope I guess I didn’t.
