Red Light Cameras

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

Lawmakers were considering having those red-light cameras installed, which would catch people running red lights, take their picture and then a ticket would be sent to them via the mail.

The pilot program was struck down, but what do you think about it? Is this Big Brother or should safety come first? Would these have been safe? Love it or hate it?

Beat the Traffic!

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

We debuted a new "real time" traffic system today on Eyewitness News This Morning.  It’s the valley’s only system that can show you REAL time traffic conditions on the highways.  You will be able to actually see the traffic speeds on the highways.  You will be able to glance at the T.V. and see if there is a slow down that affects your commute!

Green flows mean speeds are at 45 mph or above.  Yellow shows speeds of 45 mph to 30 mph.  And, Red shows 30 mph or under.  If you are seeing a red highlighted highway.. you will probably want to take another route.

The system allows us to fly around the valley…. it even lets us fly over the California and Arizona border to show traffic conditions.  It really is unique.  Beat the Traffic will help us more accuratley point out traffic conditions.

You can also get this information on the internet… 24 hours a day!  Just click on our traffic page.

Record High Electric Rates Expected by Summer

Monday, April 23rd, 2007

The hot summer could also be an expensive one. Record high electric rates are possible in the Las Vegas Valley, if state regulators approve Nevada Power’s request for an increase.

That could mean an 11.5-percent increase for the typical residential home.

What would you like to say to the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada?

Clock is Ticking on Las Vegas’ Water Supply

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

Troublesome news coming from the Southern Nevada Water Authority — unless we act quickly, there will be no water for hundreds of thousands of Las Vegas Valley residents in just three years.

Channel 8 Eyewitness News looked deeper into the problem and why time may not be on our side. Not only is this a race against time, but it’s going to cost valley residents dearly.

Even if all of the water projects are finished and everything starts working on time, SNWA still predicts a shortage. That means by 2010, the valley will be short 64-million gallons of water a day.

Does Las Vegas need an alternative? Seize the chance to post your comments, concerns, and ideas on the water issue facing the Las Vegas Valley. (SCROLL DOWN TO POST)

It is the deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history. The tragedy unfolded on the campus of Virginia Tech Monday morning before classes started when two people were killed.

Two hours later, in a different part of campus, the gunman opened fire in a full classroom. He killed at least 32 people and then the shooter took his own life. Dozens more are injured.

Post your condolences and thoughts.

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

As gas prices reach record highs, Nevada lawmakers may make your next fill up even more expensive. But the plan could help solve the state’s road crisis.

Some lawmakers believe a $.03 gas tax will actually help the $4 billion shortfall.

What’s your say on the gas tax and the escalating prices at the pump?
