‘Right Turn’ Flight Path: For or Against?

The Federal Aviation Administration announced in Nov. 2006 that planes will again start to leave McCarran International Airport to the northwest.  When the plan was tested, it produced a firestorm of protest.

Now, the city of Las Vegas says is taking t he FAA to court over the "right turn" decision. The city claims the FAA did not analyze the impact on air quality, specifically carbon monoxide and particular matter from the increase in the number of planes sitting on the runway.

Do you agree with the city of Las Vegas and the residents in the northwest valley? Or do you agree with the FAA’s "right turn" decision?

  1. Yvonne Says:

I don’t understand the big deal. My house has been directly under the flight path in the southwest for years and it is not bad. Sure we hear planes once in a while, but certainly not worth all of this commotion!

  2. S. D. R. Says:

Out here in Desert Shores, there are several large man-made lakes.

We get quite a few different species of migrant waterfowl that stop here every season in order to rest while on their journey.

I am very concerned the new flight paths and resulting disturbance may interfer with the migrations of these flocks.

  3. Anne Brew Says:

Why do Summerlin residents think they are special ? ? ? If the take-off patterns cut fuel usage, I think it is a good idea. I hear planes once in awhile and I don’t believe it has depressed the price of my property in one of the Sunrise Villas.

  4. Socorro Carrasco Says:

This town has grown in leaps and bounds, if the flight path helps the airplanes to arrive or take off on time, with minimal safety risk; then I’m all for it. For those who live in the northwest suck it up and get used to it; starting with the mayor. I don’t recall hearing about northwest home owners owning the skies as well.

  5. philip Says:

i think the people om the nw side are cry babys i live on the ne side of town where i have jets fly over me all the time and it is not big deal to me and others

  6. Chantel Says:

I currently live in the South and am directly under the flight path. Sure there is a little noise from the airplanes, but so what. We live in a large city and must learn to conform to changes for the good of all…. Yes, even those in Summerlin.

  7. Tim Says:

I live on the proposed new flight path. I don’t see the problem. It’s a rare safety risk. Planes don’t just fall out of the sky. It also helps reduce congestion over the skies by allowing planes heading the east to turn directly toward the east instead of circling around toward inbound traffic.

  8. Cindy Says:

I have lived in the flight path of Nellis Air Force base for 9 years now. The people of Summerlin who are complaining need to come spend an afternoon or evening at my house. Once they do that, they MIGHT understand that the noise they might encounter from commercial flights isn’t so bad.

  9. Bob Says:

I think this is great they have been flying that path for a few months now and no one has even said a thing about it. If they just do it and not say a thing no one would know.

  10. Paul Says:

This is completely ridiculous. I live in the NW & watch F-16s fly daily in this airspace. This new plan is a giant mid-air collision waiting to happen.

  11. Vivian Says:

About time they share what we have had for the last decade. We don’t think they should get away with not sharing the good with the bad and they’ve had the good for awhile now. Time to share.

  12. Jjoanne D'Errico Says:

Why should any part of the city be protected from air traffic noise. I think it is good to releave some traffic from a very well traveled traffic area. We own in the SW and the noise really isn’t that bad. Deal with it…

  13. KCH Says:

Having a commercial flight path over one’s house is not nearly anything to cry about. After living on military bases for 10 years with jets taking off, I would love to have Boeing 747 flying over…at least they don’t make sonic booms a 1/2 mile above your roof. As for the wildlife aspect mentioned above…that does warrent concern, we can only hope that their life is not affected…but unfortunatley commercial America doesn’t care about the natural side.

  14. Sam Says:

If you bought a house within 15 miles of the airport AFTER the airport was built, STOP YOUR WHINING. What did you expect? DAH!

  15. Pat Says:

I live in Summerlin. Let the planes come. My neighbors need to get a grip. Lets welcome the small part in Las Vegas’ growth and everyones burden equaly. As for Oscar Goodman taking this issue to court, if your home or land has been developed after 1980, you have probably given an avigation easement to the FAA that states that planes can fly over your parcel. Lets all embrace the growth that probably brought you, my neighbors to Las Vegas.

  16. TheMillers Says:

The residents in Summerlin bought their homes not knowing of the new flight path, where as the people in the Henderson, Green Valley area bought their house knowing the airport is their neigbor. We live in the middle of a desert. Why can’t they fly straight out and make their turns outside of town over the desert? It is dangerous to be flying so low over the city.

  17. buzz Says:

Great!! This will help air traffic and is a fair solution. The flight plan is not a new one-it was used years ago. The people in the NW part of town seem to think they own the skies above them, with all of the howling they’ve been doing. The sooner they implement the plan, the better.

  18. Patti Says:

As much as this town has grown I think it’s selfish and naive to think that planes can just stick to one area to fly through. If people are looking for quiet, then they are in the wrong town. I also live in the northwest and don’t care if the planes are flying overhead. Between the helicopters, jets, small airplanes there isn’t going to be much of a difference. Get used to it and quit bellyaching, it’s coming whether you want it or not.

  19. Jo Ann Bachran Says:

Why is Summerlin any better than the rest of the valley. Years ago I lived in a house by the airport and I had no trouble with the noise. The Summerlin resident just need to deal with it, its no more dangerous than our side of town.

  20. Ray Dorman Says:

I wish everyone concerned about noise pollution would be interrested in the real problem.
We have a generation of people who will ruin their hearing because no one wants to spoil the party. In time few will be able to hear those planes, and wish they could.

  21. Lori Says:

Yes, let the planes fly over Summerlin — it will remind them that all those people flying over are supporting our town. It’s so dead over there, they can use a little noise — even a few casinos might liven it up over there. If they want peace and quiet there are small quiet towns outside of our great city and in other states. The city needs to do what it needs to do and not have to get permission from the people on the ground on how to route the skies.

  22. jud Says:

We all should share in the air traffic. I live in the SW and we have our share of airplane traffic. I have lived in Summerlin and around lakes where there were planes flying over and this does not deter the birds from migration. We live in Vegas with the 3rd busiest airport. We all should share in the wealth of the air traffic.

  23. DMc Says:

The sound of the planes is the sound of our growing economy. Get over it Summerlin! I can’t believe our Mayor would want to waste the money, time and effort to try and fight the FAA. I guess He would look bad to all his Summerlin buddies if he didn’t. Oh well politics as usual. Good luck to yall!!

  24. Marty Says:

Good Lord, people! Don’t you have anything better to do with your time??? Get a life and stop delaying progress.

  25. Ernest Says:

Just another example of the City wasting our money instead of focusing on real issues like land use and crime. As a Summerlin resident, I’m thinking it’s time we form our own city and get away from the grandstanding on Stewart Avenue.

  26. Javier Says:

Airplanes making a right turn will help traffic coming out of the airport by cutting down some of their flight time and their fuel..a little noise wont hurt, hey people in the North, East & South have put up with the noise why cant Summerlin residents???

  27. T Says:

This seems more to be people using legal process and technicalities for an effort that basically equates to them stomping their feet and holding their breath like little children than an actual ecological concern. The airport is unequivocally crucial to this areas completely artificial economy. Anything that supports its efficiency in the wake of the continually growing passenger demand should be supported by the city. Economic growth seems to be greatly supported… that is, until it infringes on the pristine quality of life of the largely vocal upper classes.

  28. Brooke Says:

Why is it that any other part of Las Vegas can have air traffic, but not Summerlin? When you live in a large city you deal with all the aspects of a large city. Get off your high horse Summerlin.

  29. Pat Casey Says:

I constantly have small planes flying over my house to and from the the North Las Vegas Airport. The new flight path of McCarren traffic going to the right is a accident waiting to happen. North Las Vegas Airport is already rated the most dangerous small airport in America. Give me a break with the big boys too.

  30. Brian Walsh Says:

People listen up!The city is doing the right thing for all the residents of LV.This is not a noise issue or a Summerlin issue. The air quality in the valley stinks. Don’t think for a minute that our air quality is getting better. Ask youself the time it takes to go somewhere in your vehicle today compared to last year. Twice as long? 3 times as long? All you people who were for the smoking ban, where are you now? Listen Up! Those air quality reports for the valley are getting worse, regardless of what they say. This air traffic to the west if it takes effect will hurt all the people in the valley. Its just what we need more jet fuel sprayed over the valley, now on the West side, but don’t worry East side, you will get our pollution because when the winds blow they blow 90% in your direction.Next time you blow your nose look into your hankie or tissue. We are on a disaster course, thats right,Its called CALIFORNIA. All you air heads out there that use LV as a stop-over, Don’t bother keep going we don’t want your pollution. You screwed up your state, and your certainly not going to pollute MY Nevada. I won’t even go into the safety issue right now, thats for another time.Just remember this posting if the FAA gets its way. P.S Starting tomorrow any vehicle from Ca. blowing smoke from its exhaust I will be calling the DMV to report a violation

  31. Janet Says:

Complaining about the flight path? What a joke! I live in a flight path for those same planes and love to sit out and watch them as they go by. Besides, the airport was here before your homes were built, and so what you weren’t informed? Common sense says that where there is an airport there will be plane traffic, and they need to change with the times the same as you do. If it will save time and fuel, that is this nation’s priority right now, and who knows, maybe the flight path will change again and again in the future. As for your peace of mind, if your house was so poorly built as to cause the noise to bother you, maybe you should sell it and move to the desert yourselves, but just be sure there is no airport within 50 miles or so from you. Or learn to appreciate the beauty of those big birds flying overhead! Just don’t expect the rest of us that pay taxes to the city and county to support your minor and frivolous complains by hiring attorneys and sue the FAA, THAT is a crime! Perhaps the rest of us should sue the city for wasting tax dollars! Get a life!!!

  32. E Says:

Mid Air Collisions? Come on. How many mid-air collisions have there been in NYC, Chicago, LA or any of the other major cities that have multiple airports?

Most military air traffic and civillian air traffic do not share space, and the planes leaving McCarren are well above planes approaching NLV. Plus they have these people called ‘air traffic controllers’ who keep the planes apart as well.

Living at Trop & Decatur I can barely hear the airplanes when I am inside my home. What’s next, Summerlin? Are you going to seek to have metro’s chopper from flying up there? It’s lower and louder than any plane coming from McCarren.

  33. Bill Inman Says:

I live directly under the flight path of planes coming into McCarran. Even when the wind conditions require them to take off in the same flight path you cannot hear them when inside the house. I sorta enjoy sitting out under the patio and watch them coming in and taking off.

As far as the risk goes, I feel safer with the planes coming over than I do driving anywhere in Las Valley.

  34. betty Says:

I think the entire town needs to
share the flight paths! I feel the FAA has made an excellent choice. The Summerlin residents are no better than the rest of the community. It seems the area has more politicians and money and they are trying to flaunt it by saying they should not have to participate as the rest of the citizens currently do. Our elected officials need to take a look at the real issues that plague our town which are many and address them!

  35. Brian Says:

We must all agree upon the safety of our Valley. Whether its air pollution from our vehicles or the jet fuel from the aircraft flying in and out of the valley. The problem is only going to get worse.Construction is full steam ahead. More houses more people more vehicles more planes, More Pollution! We must act together for a cleaner Nevada. We must unite against the “N evada A ir & N asty C alifornia’s Y ammer for the P olitical E quivocal L abial O lfaction of S catterbrains Inc Known to everyone as ” NANCY PELOSI”. We must take back our State from California. P.S- All you Ca. residents that go to the Red Rock Casino shut your car off of when you pull into your parking spot. You are just adding to the pollution.

  36. Lynn Says:

The entire valley is a flight path! Get over it Summerlin. In addition to that I think the Summerlin folks should fight with their own money and not rest of the valley’s tax money.

  37. Chris K Says:

    Get over it, Summerlin!

As a 100,000+ mile a year flier out of McCarran, primarily heading east, I support any procedure that cuts 38 flight miles off my eastbounds and allows an unrestricted climb to 19,000 feet (instead of 7,000 feet on the current southbound departure).

Besides, aircraft these days are much quieter than they were when the original right turn was abolished in the early 2000s. The airport was then rife with older 727s, DC-10s, and other classic ‘noise makers.’ Now there are only a handful of those left, only a fraction would be heading north and east, and if people in Summerlin and The Lakes can’t deal with 4 or 5 window rattlers a day like the rest of us, then phooey to them.

  38. rick Says:

Noise levels are detrimental to human health. I firmly believe we should all share in the noise and develop about 5 flight paths and let everyone share the pain.

I can’t believe all the rich people in the North West couldn’t stop this new flight plane. Right over the Lakes!
FAA recommends 3 panes of glass and extra insulation.
I live in the South and am very happy today!!

  40. damon Says:

Another vote for “get over it” Summerlin. It’s about time snooty-ville gets their share of fly-bys. The planes go over my house night and day. Though it’s interesting to watch, it’s time for plane watching to be a avocation for loftier folks. Maybe plane will fix them nosejobs.

  41. live in the nw Says:

Seems if you bought a house in the flight path you knew you were buying one in the flight path – and if you bought one out of the flight path it was because you wanted to be out of it and should be allowed to remain so.

I think it is very small minded to be angry that people in Summerlin are fighting it. They have every right to do so. They bought their homes out of the flight plan. There are a lot of older people in this part of town as well. They did not have the traffic prior to the change and they bought there for a reason. The traffic, noise, air quality are all concerns for them. They moved to the quiet part of town because it was the quiet part of town. Just because you don’t live in a quiet area doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t be able to do so. How selfish of you.

In addition, many of these people have worked hard their whole lives to retire somewhere that they feel is healthy for them. The lifestyle here keeps them young – unfortunately the air pollution and noise is likely to have a detrimental effect on those with COPD, Heart Ailments and other things that go with aging. Very sad that you wish for them noise and pollution simply because you could not afford a home in that area.

  42. JJ Says:

Everyone shares in the economic benefit of the planes bringing in millions of tourists. It’s only fair everyone shares in having to deal with the plane noise as well. Sorry Summerlin and The Lakes, you get no sympathy from me.

  43. Elizabeth Says:

Much worse than I expected…I will definitely have to move. The first thing I asked my real estate agent two years ago was whether we were in a flight path. I narrowed down my search to certain areas of the valley based on that assumption. The FAA must have known this was in the works well before announcing their plans. I understand the growth issue, but it should have been declared upfront so that those of us who DO CARE could have 1) made our home purchase accordingly or 2) had plenty of time to plan a move.

  44. Allie Lakey Says:

What a bunch of cry babies! I’m continually shocked at how much arrogance people show when they complain about something that the rest of us deal with all the time. I live near Nellis AFB and am not at all bothered by the airplanes – sure we hear them, but it doesn’t disrupt our lives, or pose any danger to our delicate senses! These people should give thanks that they have time and energy to devote to such a frivolous cause.

  45. Flora Woratschek Says:

First of all, Summerlin and Northwest Valley folks…. stop whining! Those planes feed the engine that feeds us all! I LIKE my low taxes, abundant restaurant and entertainment choices, and proximity to one of the world’s top destinations! They are the reasons I moved here! Flights are a fact of life here – move to Idaho or Iowa if you want a quieter environment! Second.. What makes you all so special? I live directly under a major flight path in the Green Valley-MacDonald Ranch area … hundreds of flights go DIRECTLY over my head every single day (and night)! I could ask why you feel you are somehow more important than the rest of us…. that somehow YOU get to have a “no flight zone” over your head while the rest of us are under the jets. Why are your property values and eardrums somehow more important than mine?
    Why is that, again??
Seriously, though… Yes, I hear the planes, but it doesn’t really bother me. You get used to it just like you get used to anything else.

  46. ts Says:

This has to be stopped! overnight we live on a flight path. Would fight this all the way.

  47. Brian irey Says:

For everyone telling the N.W. to “get over it” come over to my house in Desert Shores and have a beverage on the patio. What used to be peace and quite is now constant jet noise. Inside and out! I can deal with a few flights overhead, but 200 everyday.Give me a break! Sorry I bought here because it was quiet, so NO Im not getting over it! Its much worse than I expected and I wish now that i had attended the protest meetings. Brian

  48. AL GOMA Says:

Summerlin had become an open air gynmasium for overpriced landlords. There was so much smelly perspiration and dog droppings there! Hopefully, those elements will now flee indoors, opening up the streets to The People. Howard Hughes once owned most of Summerlin. It was destined for airplanes one way or another.

  49. DDM Says:

It’s a shame that our tax dollars are being spent on this issue. The planes have to fly somewhere – get over it Summerlin!!!

  50. Charile Dunn Says:

It is sad the people that can not afford to live in Summerlin critize the people that do. If you paid over a half million dollars for a tiny home for safety, cleanliness and quiet, you would be fighting this too. The city should share the cost to fight this, we share the cost of roads and other public interests, and I believe Summerlin residents pay a lot of taxes! So wake up and stop the jealousy.

  51. randi Says:

Unbeleivable noise levels late at night and early in the morning. My kids couldn’t sleep. If this is not reversed we will have to move. The FAA should be stopped.

  52. Maria Says:

Get over it Summerlin???? Cry babies??? Thank you neighbor for putting all that effort in understand the concerns of your fellow Las Vegans. I guess if the economic benefits of growth caused a plane crash into someone’s home, then Summerlin might get some compassion from its neighbors.

Thank you Mayor Oscar Goodman and the City Council. At least someone understands the negative side of a federal agency completely ignoring the concerns of thousands of residents.

And talk about arrogance? Summerlin is not arrogant, the FAA is the one who blew off the entire Las Vegas Valley by ignoring thousands of public comments. No one was trying to stop the planes from coming into and out of town. But to send the majority of them in one direction, the most populated direction, is and always will be a mistake. Geez! It pretty clear what Summerlin is mad about!

  53. John Elliott Says:

Fight the right turn. What can I do to help? If you people are so happy with the planes flying over your houses, I promise I will do everything I can just so you can enjoy the quality of life you’ve come to cherish so much. Seriously, given the choice wouldn’t you want the planes flying out of town then turning? Yes, you the people who bought in a flight path?

  54. Tony Says:

This right turn departure thing is a nightmare. Before the change, the only thing I could hear in the neighborhood is an occassional weed eater. I live 20 minutes from the airport. If I wanted to buy a home at the end of a runway, I would have. There are many less people affected by the southern departure route and virtually no benefit to the community by changing and/or adding the new route.

  55. Reggie Says:

I moved from the UNLV area so I would not hear the Jet noise almost 15yrs ago. Have been in town for almost 40yrs now.
For years, people who moved to the southwest area KNEW about the jet noise and those of us who moved to the NorthWest choose that becasue we didn’t want to hear jet planes.

Please am no “well off” Summerlin resident, I have worked on the Strip for a long time and didn’t want to Hear the noise and that’s why I moved.

  56. Kimberly Says:

One issue that those not living in the new flight path do not understand or been informed on is that before the added noise of the new path, this area is the approach for the North LV airport. This means noiser and lower flying planes that start at around 4:30 AM. Add onto this the helicopters from Summerlin Hospital and Mountain View Hospital. If you will eliminate those two, I will gladly stop complaining about the additional noise I now have to live with every 10 minutes from the new path.

  57. Georgi Burkin Says:

I too think the people of Summerlin should get over it! When Las Vegas was a small town the airport was on the edge of town and now it is the middle so what do people expect? The planes have to fly over houses to get out of here, so why should the people in Summerlin have special treatment?

  58. A. C. Curry, M.D. Says:

Noise Pollution. That is what the FAA has blessed us with starting this week. The ‘right turn departure’ from LAS – then full power climb out over our city. With no apparent effort to employ any of the ‘noise abatement’ rules of the departure, that are enforced over many other cities. In our area, we have hundreds of flights – from 06:00 until midnight that are now occurring. There is a constant roar of jet noise on this selected route over the residential area. Where is the EPA impact study that predicted this noise pollution? Have we been ‘blind sided’ again by our government bureaucracy? It is a cinch they do not consider why we choose to live in this area—outdoor recreation, parks, golfing, walking, tennis, patio life, to name only a few reasons. We choose to live here primarily for life style—not noise pollution. This is like living at the end of the runway! Did the FAA really follow the procedures in FAR part 150, especially on the Noise Compatibility Study? The manual includes a large section on the community involvement. Maybe we need to find a rare butterfly that cruises up to 10000 ft above Las Vegas! That will get more attention than we residents get! Our community has been infected with a NOISE pollution problem by the FAA.

  60. Southwest Resident Says:

Summerlin and the lakes? I was in the area yesterday and heard nothing.

Now over my house is a different story. I live near durango and 215. Yesterday starting before 7am we started hearing planes every 3-5 minutes! And they are LOW over my house. By the time they get over summerlin they are fairly high and not making much noise.

I’m not saying ‘get over it’ to those residents because it is louder near my house. I’m saying continue to seek whatever legal methods are available to protest and support the city’s efforts against the FAA’s decision. And call the airport noise hotline EVERY DAY.

  61. Regina Says:

When I bought my house 8 yrs ago in Peccole Ranch, I bought it because of its location and quiet neighborhood. Between myself and husband, our income is less than $50k a yr. supporting 3 children. I am on Social Security Disability due to an illness. So for those people who think that our area including the surrounding neighborhoods are all rich people are wrong. Most people especially in the subdivisions are just simple middle income families who were fortunate enough to have bought houses built by developers who cared about the quality of environment for their clients. There may be some homes that are considered oppulent but the majority are middle income homeowners who have at least more than 2 children.

I am a disabled person who doesn’t get enough sleep at night due excruciating pain in my body. At night I take sleeping pills to help me get through the night. And during the day, because of all the medications I have to take, I would feel drowsy and so spend few hours sleeping. But for the last 4 days, I haven’t been able to get any sleep at all because of the rumbling sound of the airplanes every 30 seconds, making me feel more fatigued and tired and my eyes burning due to lack of sleep. Due to my disability, I have been confined at home, and I usually love to stay out in my backyard and sometimes sleep in the patio during the nice weather and now I can not even open my windows to let some fresh air in.

My daughter who has been studying for the CRT test (for the No Child Left Behind) complained to me yesterday afternoon that she’s being distracted by the noise of the airplanes and have a hard time concentrating.

So please for those people who doesnt care about the airplane noise, do not judge other people especially those who are in my situation (which I’m sure there are lot of us in this neighborhood) because you don’t know what we are going through.

  62. lvgrama Says:

What make the people in the West think they are any better than the rest of us that already put up with the planes flying overhead? Do we not have a concern with more planes over our homes? Do these people that only think about themsevles ever fly? Do they take advantage of the airport? You are not any better. Live with it as the rest of us do. A chance of a plane accident is very slim.

Upset by people that only think of themsleves.

  63. Norma Gray Says:

I am beginning to hear these flights regularly, and I live at Cheyenne and Durango. They’re not even supposed to come over this far – WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING????? This is the same thing as the government deciding to use eminent domain on your property. How dare they take away our peaceful lifestyle.
    I am here 17 years.

  64. Jason Says:

This new right turn is just another example of how our country has turned into a terrorist organization both domestically and abroad. The FAA, just like other government agencies, does whatever it wishes regardless of citizen concerns. I live near Buffalo and Charleston and the noise is ridiculous. The planes were supposed to be spread out over a path from Buffalo to Hualapai, yet all of them are taking one narrow path right up Cimmaron. The are making their turn just before they reach Charleston. One narrow strip of residents should not be subjected to all of the noise. If all of the city benefits from this improved airport efficiency, then they should all hear some noise.

  65. Mark Fletcher Says:

    To Whom it may concern!

My Family moved here about a year ago, we live now in the Northwest Las Vegas Valley. We were explicit to our real-estate agent when we moved here we need a quite area as my mother is 75 with a heart condition, and my aunt is 91 with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease & dementia.
I myself have had about 3 hours of sleep a night sense Tuesday when they fully implemented the right turn path of witch we had no idea, was going to happen ( nothing in the mail no fliers no warning in writing of any kind !) It has put my 91 year old Aunt in the Hospital, and I am now very worried about how it’s effecting my mother. They start flying over our house about 5:30am till 2:30am that same night constantly, all day and all night, the noise is unbearable!!! If anything happens to my Mother because of this inconceivable situation, and this noise effects her health in anyway I will hold the FAA totally responsible!!! In the meantime this is effecting my health and my well being, this is psychological terrorism!!!
I have read some of the response’s of the people residence in the southwest area how we should share the noise! Totally absurd! They new what they were moving into, thats why we chose the Northwest! If we had been warned this was going on here in the valley we would have never moved to Las Vegas at all! And to just up an change the rules over night and throw the problem to some one else, is outrageous!!! And in response to, I think the word they used was self-centered are the people in the Northwest? To just move the problem to some one else with no warning is beyond self-centeredness and is not only vicious, but illegal.
My suggestion to the FAA is those of us that were not aware of this unbelievable short-sided quick-fix greedy de-scission, that is totally just for the airlines to save money on fuel and is psychological terrorism. Is to buy back our house’s and compensate us for our relocation! And every day it takes and every plane that fly’s over, and all the health problems ( hospital bills, psychological problems, and what ever unKnown problems it creates ) the FAA will be held accountable.
In closing I think this is horrible how the FAA has created an us against them, created a civil war, the northwest against the southwest and using people caught in the cross fire to get there way! A quick fix never works for the long run!
I have read today that the study they did on the noise, was nothing more than just like a blender running, so for all those at FAA that forced this nightmare upon us, I wish we could strap a blender to the neck of each and every one of these official’s and have it turn every minute of the day and night, lets see how they operate.
To all the people that say it’s know big deal and they have no problem with Jets flying over you all day and night, and thats the way you want to live, God Bless you, to force others to live like you and to say that we are cry babies and we have live the same way you do it outrageous! You made your choice, we made ours, please stop your double talk!
To prove how one sided this is I’ll bet you don’t post this!

  66. Dino M Says:

I purchased my home 3 years ago at Patrick and Grand Canyon becuase it was a quite area now the plnaes fly right over my home I can’t sleep at night and i can’t afford to buy another home. And based on the current noise polution I couldn’t sell my home.

  67. Judy Says:

No matter what you think, there is a lot of airplane noise in Summerlin. I live near Town Center and the Summerlin PArkway and hear the loud drone of engines all day, sometimes 5 minutes apart. I can no longer enjoy my patio or take an afternoon nap for that matter. Noise goes on from 6 am til midnight and it is very loud. ANd I live in an area which the FAA’s noise contour map shows “No noise increase”.

The city fighting the FAA is just a smokescreen – they cannot win. And public hearings??? They’re only a way for residents to vent their anger but are totally meaningless in the process.

  68. janet Says:

To all of you that say the Summerlin people should get over it and to all of you who say a plane or two shouldn’t bother anyone I’d like to invite you to my house… I live in Peccole Ranch in a modest home and we’re not talking about a plane or two. It’s more like 200 a day! Do the math and you’ll see that it works out to about one plane every 7 minutes. They are low to ground and extremely noisy. I’m certainly willing to share the pain of the city growing but should I really have to listen to planes 24/7? They fly as late as 2:00 AM and as early as 5:30 AM. At least limit the number of flights and flight times so we can get some sleep around here…

  69. Irvin Putt Says:

As a 27 year resident of this valley I have seen quite a few changes and growth in the city I love. I don’t understand why we have to change a flight plan to fly over such a populated area and such a rapidly growing one as well. Why don’t the planes fly an extra 1-3 miles west and then turn right? McCarran is outdated. A new airport is needed to maintain the lifeblood of this city…tourism. Build it far to the southwest, out of the way for everyone, and make it big enough to handle the influx. New casinos (City Center, Wynn’s Encore, etc.) will INCREASE the traffic we already have.

  70. John & Maria Hardina Says:

Me and my wife paid $50,000 for our peaceful and quiet lot January of last year. Now, we can’t sleep and will never ever be able to enjoy what we paid so dearly for. In an economy where every single dollar comes with blood, sweat, and tears we feel robbed of everything we saved for the last 20 years. 200 per day? Really, I swear there is 1 flight over our house every 30 seconds. My wife can not stand one ounce of noise (reason why we paid the $50,000) and our children have to be very quiet when she’s sleeping. Now, she can’t even sleep. How do we get in on this lawsuit and get some retribution? If the airlines are saving money, they can give us our money back and keep our house!!! We’ll move. It’s right on a peaceful driving range. Oh wait, that was before….now it’s HELL!!!

  71. Mukund Says:

My wife and I moved to Peccole Ranch in Dec 2005. One of the main reasons for us to move to this area was the lush greenery and the quiet and peace when sitting out on the lawn over weekends. Ever since FAA has decided to fly more than 200 planes every day the noise levels of planes flying over our heads is keeping us up at nights. Sitting out on the lawn to enjoy the peace and quiet has become a thing of the past. Whatever happened to people’s right to justify their cause. Why cant we convince FAA or seek a higher authority to change this or put a stop to it? FAA’s excuse is simply not acceptable. I wish we could turn back the clock and have it the way it was a month ago

  72. williams Says:

McCarran airport is the 9th largest airport in the county, to think that additional flight paths are not needed is just being silly. I live in the City but my home is in the NW part of town and I for one do not want to pay any additional tax because of this silly lawsuit. Get over it people, it is called growth. I have lived in this town since 1963 and seen many changes, I do not like some of the things that our growth has brought, but is all part of growth. Guess what, it is going to get worse too!! Get over the airplane noise people and Mayor Goodman, please spend our tax dollars in the City on better things.

  73. C.Brown Says:

The people who complain the loudest usually get their way even if it is wrong. I live in Henderson, planes take off and land near my house. Sometimes it’s barely noticable and sometimes it’s really noticeable. What makes citizens who also fly think only certain other citizens should bear the burden of planes flying overhead. This is just a battle of those who feel they are better than others.

  74. Jason Willette Says:

I just sent an e-mail to channel 8 about some lady named Judy who says it is so loud that she feels a slight rumble and the noise makes the dogs bark. Rubish pure rubish. Get over it Summerlin. It is not that loud. People are right some of you think that you are owed this. Its a city and we have an airport. Like I said I hear the cars a street over making more noise than the planes. In fact I want the firestation which makes the dogs howl and bark to get up and move. Boy that would suck if your house caught on fire and it took the trucks too long to get to your house. But it is too noisey and I want them over by your house. Now put back the pacifier and stop whinning. Things could be worse. Oh yeah I live on Sahara down from the 215. So I am in there and it is not that bad.

  75. C.Brown Says:

The people who complain the loudest usually get their way even if it is wrong. I live in Henderson, planes taking off and landing fly right over my house. Sometimes it’s barely noticable and sometimes it’s really noticeable. What makes citizens who also fly think only certain other citizens should bear the burden of planes flying overhead? This is just a battle of those who feel they are better than others. The really annoying thing is low flying helicopters, now that is something that should be regulated. My house is just as expensive as yours in Summerlin, another theme I saw running through these blogs. Also, I didn’t know about the flight paths when we bought, I was just glad the freeway was coming. But even if I had, it would not have mattered. Air travel is important for our economy and we all should bear the burden. Plus if they don’t save on fuel cost’s the price for air travel will just keep increasing.

  76. MARY HELEN Says:

FOR ALL MY FRIENDS WHO LIVE IN SUMMERLIN YOU NEED TO SHARE THE GOOD, BAD AND UGLY. WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL THAT YOU ARE TO GOOD FOR WHAT THE REST OF DEAL WITH EVERDAY GET OVER YOUR YOURSELF. I USE TO BE ABLE STAND IN MY LIVING ROOM AND WATCH MY CHILDREN PLAY, AND SEE SUNSET NOW I SEE TALL BUILDING,HEAR THE FREEWAY THAT TAKE’S YOU HOME EVER NIGHT.

  77. Joe Guzman Says:

I understand the concern of all these residents involved but is anyone doing anything for us, the people who live on the south east side of Las Vegas. We’re right on the airplanes path on their way to McCarran and it is noisy! You dont hear us complaining. I can still enjoy my pool and a nap outiside. I see the planes go over by either side of the house. Dont spend taxpayer dollars on these complains. Learn to leave with it people!

  78. M.J.B. Says:

This is a rapidly growing city and we all need to share the pains of a growing city. If you don’t like the noise of the planes and the stresses that go along with a growing city then move to some state that isn’t growing like Vegas. I live under the flight path of Nellis AFB. I will trade my path for yours any day. Quit crying and be thankful our city is doing so well. Thousands of other cities would love the opportunity to experience the rapid growth we are enjoying. We have jobs, they do not.

  79. Janet Says:

FINALLY!! Someone does have a head on their shoulders and realizes that fighting this in court would not only cost a lot of our taxpayer’s dollars, but would also be a drawn out affair. So many of us would not want our tax dollars to be used for a fight that we consider frivolous. I have lived on and near air force bases where the noise level is much much higher than the commercial planes you are now complaining about, and know what?? You can really get so used to them, you don’t even hear the planes and even your washer and dryer can be more of a headache than the planes ever thought of being. And I now live under a flight path but rarely notice the noise, but do enjoy watching them fly over…when I think about them…maybe that’s what you should be doing when you sit out on your patio, I do. If the noise is so loud you can’t hear someone talking, then you must be deaf already and I’m shocked that you could even hear the plane noise. Please don’t use our tax dollars in this way. There are so many other good projects that the money could be used for, to the benefit of EVERYONE in the whole valley.

  80. Kerrie Says:

I live near Aliante, and for the past 6 years I have been in the flight path for Nellis. Everyday, those jets fly over my house and rattle windows walls. At first, it was hard to get used to, but now to me, it’s the sound of freedom. Summerlin, if you really don’t think you can get used to it, move. Besides, I am hoping to get rid of more than a few California transplants here, the ones who pushed for and voted for a smoking ban in Sin City…brilliant. So please, be my guest and head out of the valley. Go back to the land of liberal flakes. Good riddance.

  81. Craig Says:

Summerlin residents, stop! We hear that the FAA moved the planes without due diligence, what have you been listening to and watching? This right hand turn has been in the works ever since the FAA moved the planes to the south in 2001. With a little research you would have been able to find this out. I currently live in the Southwest and have for many years. It’s not that bad folks. Don’t get on the bandwagon now and start complaining about something that was inevitable and for 35 years previously was unchanged. We live in a city like no other in the world with opportunities for all, great opportunities. Without the planes and the tourists where would we be? If you really want peace and quiet try the east side of town, no wait Nellis is there. How about The Lakes of Las Vegas, no wait thats where all the planes fly over on approach. There everywhere. If you want to make the living you make and continue the lifestyle you are accustomed to, get use to it. If not St.Anthony, Idaho looks like the place for you!!

  82. Terence Says:

We must move on! We have a budget shortfall in the state, underpaid Teachers, a County Hospital in serious financial trouble, underpaid Police officers, underfunded school district and growth issues. We (Nevada residents) need to drop the issue and move to address other more pressing problems plague the state.

  83. D. Baker Says:

Hello, I also live in Summerlin and notice the airplanes overhead while relaxing on my patio after work. However, my biggest concern is the danger inherent in making the infamous “right turn”. Stall/spin accidents are responsible for half of all maneuvering flight accidents according to USDOT-FAA. Also, most accidents occur at low altitudes and 1/4 on take-off. In addition, there is the responsibility for competant pilots (maintaining proper altitude for initiating a right turn) and for properly maintained aircraft(power loss due to engine failure while climbing). Mostly, for me, it is very sad to read how this “new” noise pollution has disrupted so many unsuspecting lives. In closing, airplane accidents due to power loss of engines along with failure to maintain adequate flying speed and altitude, while making a steep right turn, is extremely worrisome, to say the least.

  84. Linda Heil Says:

quit your whinning. The rest of the town has to listen to it and do any of the people in that area ever fly out of McCarren? If you use the servie, be quite. What makes you think you are any better than the rest of the town.

  85. Art Says:

    Dear Summerlin:

Please get over yourself. No matter what your mother told you, you are not “special” — the right turn pattern is a fuel saving measure. This may be an unknown term to the Hummer drivers up there, but for the rest of the world, it is important. You would not have been able to purchase your wonderful house but for the economic benefit brought to all of the valley by the tourism which those flights represent.

  86. Debra Denithorne Says:

It’s a travesty of justice to have the noise invade our quiet, private neighborhoods and the privacy of our own yards! Also, these planes fly low. Plus, let’s not forget about the added pollution. When we moved to the area, no one told us anything about the possiblity of a change in airplane pattern. Now it seems that there’s no hope for a change. With the value of homes declining and no end in site, this will only add to that decline–and more rapidly I might add. Homes in my neighborhood have already suffered from it since we’re on a direct overheard path. This is not pleasant to anyone unless you’ve lived at Nellis in the past and are used to it and just don’t care. I for one DO care and I speak for many. Summerlin is one of the finest master-planned communities in the entire country so for those of you who are pooh-poohing Summerlin and think we’re on our high-horse just because we live in Summerlin, too bad. Maybe you’re jealous???

  87. scott Says:

I live in Summerlin near Desert Inn and Town Center. Since the new flight path I hear the planes overhead in the morning (6-8 a.m.) and in the evening when I get home (4:30-6:30 pm) I understand, that with the growth in population and air traffic out of McCarron, things like this are likely to happen. However, maybe they could consider flying out over the mountains further to the west before their turn or use a noise abatement procedure, as they do in Orange County, CA., to reduce the noise level. I always said when you build under an airport flight path you get what you paid for. However, we didn’t have much say nor was there any warning when purchasing our homes out here that this flight path was a possibility. The FAA shoved it down our throats. They made a feeble attempt at listening to the concerns of the residents in their forums. Their decision was already made. So for us to suck it up and accept it is not in the cards. We deserve a bit of a push back.

  88. Chrystelle Says:

Please stop assuming the only people affected live in Summerlin. We live in Spring Valley & have to put our house on the market. The noise is unbelievable and 24/7. I am not sure we are all talking about the same situation. Depending on the location, it can be OK or it can be that you can’t even hear the TV with all windows closed. I didn’t move near Nellis, I didn’t move in the Southwest part of town or Henderson. I moved to an area with NO planes…And please let’s stop this ridiculous fight between communities, that’s how the FAA wins …by dividing cities…got it???????
Mayor Goodman, this is a safety issue and a noise pollution problem…please fight the FAA.

  89. crawdad Says:

If you look on McCarran airport website and look at the flight paths, you will see that the rest of the valley has more than it’s fair share of the air traffic. Why aren’t you people in Summerlin worried about the rest of us under the flight paths? Why is the city spending part of my tax dollars on an issue for select persons when I have to deal with the same issue all the time? Why is is safe for flight paths to be over the rest of us and not for you? You’re grabbing at straws. The FAA already did a study on the safety issue of NLV Airport and Nellis. You say the findings don’t fit in your narrow minded view? SO WHAT!!! Suck it up. If you want to be a part of this valley, then share and share alike. I’m sick of you thinking you’re better than the rest of us. You are proving that you are not team players and don’t want to be part of this community every time you bi*ch about something the rest of us have been dealing with long before you even knew where Las Vegas was. STOP WASTING EVERYONES TIME AND MONEY.

  90. Chrystelle Says:

I just wanted to remind everybody to attend the next City council meeting at 9am April 18th at City Hall downtown.
We need to make sure this flight path goes away fast..

  91. P.M. Says:

I think it is incredibly naive and unrealistic of people who live in Summerlin to think that their lifestyle would never be impacted by the growth of this community. There is always a downside to growth, and this is just one example. Every part of this town has been impacted in some way. Talk to the people on West Desert Inn whose homes plummeted in value when the DI Arterial was constructed. Or the people whose homes were destroyed to allow for the widening of 95. Summerlin should not be immune to it. As a tax-paying resident of Las Vegas, I do not want my tax dollars spent to fight the FAA.

  92. greg Says:

I would like the planes to go further west (2 miles should be enough)then turn right (over the mountains)! Also they should have to exit the airport at a steeper ascent (like in Orange County)! Common sense which will never happen because:
    1. The FAA are spineless, corrupt and beholden to the Airlines. The airlines want to save money and would not want to fly 2 more miles west if they don’t have to.
    2. Our local leadership does not have the backbone to stand up to FAA. There is no money in it for them. Nothing will be done on this issue.
Common sense over greed, I wish!!!

  93. Mike Farkas Says:

we had the same problem in Toledo,Ohio. Routes were diverted to a different way, unless extreme weather condition threatend the saftey of the jet. Also with urban sprawkl and poor planning this is the end result you have to put up with. You live near an airport you should expect to hear jets. If you didn’t something is seriously wrong!

  94. Keri Says:

I live near Twain and Grand Canyon. The noise is terrible. How about a comprimise? Limit the right turn between the hours of 9 A.M. and 9 P.M. so I can get some sleep. Is this too much to ask for? Also, if people are so hung up on the tax money why not impose a one time tax on those affected by the right turn to fight the FAA in court? I’ll gladly pay my fair share as much as the next person who hates the right turn as much as I do.

  95. Kayla Says:

I also chose to buy in Summerlin and pay higher prices, HOA dues, and SID’s on my house for the luxury of a quiet, safe community to raise my family in. All I have to say is, Oscar, I voted for you and now I’m counting on you to put a stop to this flight path over our community! There is no reason why the airlines cannot fly a little further and make their turn over the mountains. This is about politics and money as usual. Please hear the voices of the people of Summerlin!

  96. Edna Hudson Says:

Planes have to fly overhead someplace. I am outraged that the city council voted to use my tax money to fight the flight path plan to satisfy a few.

  97. Barbara Wood Says:

What about all the people that have lived with the noise all these years. It is time to share the load. I live in the middle of town and hear them no matter which way they go. If you live in a big town you have to go with the flow.

  98. Jon Rich Says:

Growth happens. When I moved into town you could have fireplaces and green lawns. I now have a dead front yard because of raising price of water and restrictions and my dream of a fire place went to the way side. I have helicopters flying all the time over my house which is increasing over the years. Growth is good even if it inconveniences me. Property values will go up as long as there is growth and convenience.

  99. Barbara Says:

I live on the east side of the valley and have to put up with the noise from Nellis Air Force Base. These people that live in Summerlin should not think that they should have any different priveleges than anyone else that lives in this valley. The city is very spread out and these planes have to fly over something in order to bring the tourist traffic into our city. They need to remember they are not the only ones that live here and the town survives on tourist economy. We would all like to live in a perfect world, but guess what we don’t. If anymore studies need to be conducted let the summerlin residents bear the expense and not the taxpayers. We all buy houses and choose where we want to live, but that does not mean we can control what suits us better than someone else. Summerlin residents get over it!!!!!!!!!!!

  100. N. Arnold Says:

This issue is ridiculous. This is part of growth. If you don’t like it move to some remote place where planes do not fly. Someone said everyone’s jealous of people who live in Summerlin. Why would anyone be jealous. I wouldn’t live there if they gave me a house free. I love where I live. It’s one of the best communities in the country. I live in Anthem. We have planes, helicopters, & you name it flying overhead, but it still does not spoil our lifestyle. Let’s not waste anymore time and taxpayers money. People get a grip. You live in an urban world, air traffic is a part of it. There are so many more important, serious issues to be concerned about in this world, focus your energies on them!

  101. Rasta Says:

This issue is more about the FEDERAL government intruding into our lives
    than it is about noise.
Maybe when the FEDS decide to plant a
shipment of nuclear waste in your backyard
(shouldn’t every resident share the burden)
you will understand why this issue needs to
    be fought.

  102. John Downing Says:

We’ve lived in The Lakes since 1994.(Sahara & Durango) Planes climbed out over our area all the time. I’ve even seen our house on a trip to Denver with our granddaughters.
When 9/11 happened all air trafic was stopped and we were so glad when planes started climbing out again. At first it was just an occasional plane, but then it got back to normal. For us it was uplifting.

  103. vela maria and federico Says:

We live near Fort Apache and Charleston. Our gated community was very peaceful until the new flight paths caused planes to fly over our house at all hours. We are especially distressed by the noisy planes between 10 pm and 7 am. Why can’t the planes turn right further west over unpopulated areas?

  104. LKG Says:

I don’t understand quite frankly what the big deal is. I live in the Northwest and also work on Rampart and Charelston and hear nothing. I can’t believe that there is so much fuss over this. Is Summerlin too “uptight” to have planes fly over their area?

  105. Eva Says:

I know the plane route is very stressing for all people affected by it. What’s going to happen when it changes. You’ll have the same problem with other people. It’s an ongoing circle. All you people that live in your fancy gated communities would rather have them fly over trailer parks and other low budget housing. Our opinion is just as important. People in my neighborhood make more money than most people that live in those gated communities. It’s just as important to us. The valley is just too big for the planes to fly over “unpopulated areas”. Hate to say it but those areas are mountains. Either way it’s going to be effecting someone. Either way there are going to be complaints. Grow up and suck it up, or move.

  106. Joe B. Says:

It is irresponsible to spend any further taxpayer money on this issue. The FAA is not doing anything new here. How quickly people seem to forget that the “new” right-turn departure path was the standard departure path prior to 9/11/01. Residents allegedly affected by the right-turn departure were simply the beneficiaries of the changes that took place immediately following 9/11/01. They have no “right” to not have aircraft overfly their houses; and certainly are not entitled to send the aircraft over the houses of others simply because they do not like the flightpath. Additionaly, a substantial number of aircraft still turn left after departure, and in doing so overfly the heavily residential southwest valley. Sorry northwest residents, your nearly 6 year vacation is over. If the aircraft noise really bothers you so much, you are free to move elsewhere.

  107. Cathy Says:

I have lived in the SW for the last 10 years. Planes have flown over my house on a regular basis. It has not been that big of a deal. Sundays are the heaviest day and that is the only day that I really notice. We live in a city where tourists give us our jobs and the increase in flights must be shared by all, not selective neighborhoods. I spend alot of time outside and they have not ruined my lifestyle. Sure I would like to not see them so much, but get real people. I don’t recall even one single accident so those of you that believe it is a hazzard should take a look at the driver that passes you on the right or speeds in your neighborhood. Our roads are far more dangerous that the skys will ever be. Please don’t spend tax payer money for the benefit of a few people who have decided to spend their spare time, listening to planes taking off. The fact is if they are indoors, you don’t hear or notice them. If Summerlin and the lakes wish to fight this, then they should take up a collection and do so, but not with my tax money.

  108. Jim Says:

We purchased a house on the southwest side prior to the flight pattern change. We paid a fair value for the property but now with the flight pattern change the airplanes turn directly over our house so the value of our property has gone down substantially. In addition, it is impossible to sleep between 10pm – midnight and early in the morning. the FAA has cost us over a hundred thousand dollars in lost property value.

Solution – have the airplanes continue straight west until they are over the mountains, then turn right in a larger circle. The planes will be high enough up at the turn point so as to not create the severe noise problem. The city must continue its’ lawsuit so get the problem rectified.

  109. Christy Says:

We live in the southeast and have planes flying over our house all the time. We deal with it. Maybe if the growth was put to a halt, Summerlin would not have to deal with the noise so many of us already do.

Safety is the issue here, not the status of where you live and why you bought your home there. Try living in Elk Grove Village and have the planes right on top of your house. THAT IS NOISE.

I think spending more money fighting this is a waste, it’s done. If you did not expect anything to change, then you should have moved to a small town. For those who lived in that area far longer, yes it will be a change and irritating. But we all have to deal with issues everyday that we do not agree with.

    JMHO

  110. Marty Says:

I have no problen with this. In fact, the more flights that go over summerlin means less flights go over my neighborhood. God bless the FAA!!!

  111. southwest resident Says:

Suck it up in the Northwest! I live in Southwest and its about time you all get some of the noise we get all the time. Get used to it, I have

  112. P. BLANTON Says:

it’s quite obvious after listening to the news and hearing that the city council approved the measure to go forward to fight the flight plan. it is also quite obvious that the only people that the city council listens to are the people in summerlin. one man stated that the noise from the airplanes was like world war II all over again. he ought to live by the air force base , then he really would complain. my family lives with it every day and don’t complain. but that’s just because we don’t live in summerlin and have the money to get someone to fight our battles for us. i don’t see what the difference is between people that live in summerlin and people that live in the rest of the town. we just seem to be ignored.

  113. Karrie Says:

The problem is that the residents of Summerlin aren’t fighting it if they were they would put there monay where there mouth is. Why are they so quick to pay our tax money on this issue. I to live near Nellis Air Force base and I am sure the noise of these fighter jets is worse than any commercial air craft. Does it make me a 2nd class citizen becuase I can’t afford to live in Summerlin? If the residents of Summerlin really want to fight this battle they should do it with their own money. Those that argue about the air quality, how is air quality going to improve just becuase of a right or left hand turn? If this where truly the issue why isn’t it the issue being discussed in the media. Not that i don’t care about this issue i just don’t see how this issue is being affected by simply changing flight paths.

  114. Desert Sores Resident Says:

Its not only Summerlin being affected, Its the entire NW. Desert Shores,The Lakes,Pecolli Ranch, lots of homes in and around those areas with average incomes. Its interesting that the people that do no live here are wieghing in the issue. Making it a “whos got more money issue” and “the rich people in Summerlin should shut up and live with it”. I have news for you . Not everyone is the NW is “rich”. And I am certain many that do have good incomes strarted with nothing and have worked very hard to get where they are.Myself included. This is America. If you dont have it(money) go out and earn it. There is plenty for everyone. In the meantime quit being “Haters”. The issue is jet noise and most that live here dont like it. My home went from almost zero noise to constant jet noise all and night. It is much worse than I expected.

  115. Allie Lakey Says:

Summerlin, Summerlin, Summerlin…..surely you aren’t raising children with the same attitude you are displaying over the flight path issue: “Take it somewhere else, we’re the priviliged. We don’t want it, so someone’s going to HAVE to give us our own way.” By the way, if the noise is so disruptive, sell your house at its supposed decreased market value and move into the old part of North Las Vegas – you will be surprised how quickly you get used to Nellis AFB airplanes and even more surprised at how much you actually enjoy seeing them.

  116. Bill Says:

Hey! Get over it,what makes you people who live in Summerlin exclusives as far as air corridor routes? There are other people who have had to bear the flights from Nellis A.F. Base and southwest areas for years and have adapted. You sound like a bunch of cry babies who need to have your noses wiped.

  117. jc Says:

This issue isn’t about those in the NW
“getting over the noise” it is really
    about protection. Yes, that’s right.

In order to have growth, you need to
protect property rights. Should those who
moved to the NW to AVOID plane noise now
be subjected to this noise? How does
that “help” growth. You ALREADY had
a designated flight plan, it provided
an option, people could choose to live
in the flight plan or they could avoid the
flight plan. Now you want to let the FAA
    take away this choice?

Why shouldn’t there be areas of the valley
which are protected from airplane noise?
Those areas afford people a choice, and those
areas will carry a premium to live and thus
generating a higher tax base. Growth costs
money, so why let the FAA lower property values and reduce the tax base.

To those who say the nosie should be shared
by all, that is fine, but do you really want
to share? How about property taxes, maybe
we should ALL pay the same amount, regardless
of our property value so that ALL would share
    the same “costs” of growth.

  118. Kimberly Says:

It ANGERS me how the Summerlin crybabies compair the “noise” to War and so loud they cant hear themselves speak to one another. They cant live with it, its to hard, they deserve better..(boo hoo, sniff sniff) If they change the flight plan for the Summerlin crybabies, then what about the Students at UNLV that have to hear it overhead daily by the airport, what about most of Vegas where the planes fly directly over our homes..I never hear anyone by Nellis complaining about it and those ARE jets flying over doing drills and such!..The Strip Hotels dont seem to be bothered with it..so what is it that makes Summerlin better then the rest of us? Are your ears more sensitive then ours? It is insane to change the flight plan over a bunch of uptight people who think they are above everyone else. GET OVER IT OR MOVE!! I hope our words are taken into consideration.. I am OUTRAGED! The planes are not that loud..what a joke Summerlin!! I dont know who those people think they are asking for the flight plan to be changed!??.. it is slap in the face to the rest of us who have been putting up with the so called noise for years. Just the same old typical rich folk trying to get their way and bully the rest of us..I just hope in this case, money doesnt buy everything…turn down your hearing aids Summerlin! Maybe thats your problem!!

  119. Kim Says:

I live on Pecos and Hacienda..have you ever noticed how low the planes fly over there to land at the airport?? just go stand on the street on Sunset and Eastern..you could almost throw a rock and hit the plane, it is so low. It is loud but not unbearable by any means. Does that give me the right to make the city change the flight path just for lil ol me? Probably not. You see, I own a condo, not a golden gated house where you deserve peace and we all should just accept it. It is not right, it is not fair and it is a waste of time, money and effort. Your SUV’s and Hummers disrupt my life but I am not complaining to the city about it! It will be scary if these Summerlin idiots win this fight..god help us all …

  120. Judy Coon Says:

After 11 years in a nice home in “The Golden Triangle” of North Las Vegas we moved. We had a lot of Nellis traffic. We knew it when we moved there and accepted it as part of life in the North. Then 3 1/2 years ago we found a quiet neighborhood in a small community in the NW. We shopped for a home for months to find the right home. Now 3 1/2 years later the flight paths at McCarran have changed and we have the jet noise we thought we’d left behind. It was suggested in another blog to move. We did! We never complained of the jet noise in the north as it was OUR CHOICE to live there. Now we will have our voice heard about the jet noise in the NW. The right turn departure has changed our quiet neighborhood. We will be heard. With 4 generations of family all over the valley we have seen a lot of growth and change. It is our right as locals to be heard.

  121. Leslie Says:

We are not whining or crybabies. We are simply standing up for what we believe is right. Stop referring to everyone in the NW as Summerlin. I DO NOT LIVE IN SUMMERLIN!When I moved to NW Las Vegas(not Summerlin, The Lakes or Peccole Ranch) 2 years ago there was no flight path directly over my home. Now YEARS later planes all day! For those of you who moved under a flight plath or by Nellis Airforce Base YOU CHOSE IT! That was your CHOICE and you have to live with it. I however did not choose it and I should not have to move to a different area of Las Vegas because the FAA will not take into considerdation the residents who live here! This is my home!

  122. Kathy Says:

I live about 3 blocks from McCarran Airport and don’t even hear the noise from the planes (you actually get used to the noise and notice it more if you don’t “hear” it). The residents in the northwest do not own the air above their homes, nor the water to their homes, nor the sewage from their homes. Stop crying and move to Pahrump or Death Valley if you don’t want to hear the planes. I don’t want to hear your crying and whining…..

  123. GCS Says:

    I have a question.

Is it the position of those who oppose the right-turn, that McCarran’s daily air traffic be “reduced” by 300 flights to avoid implementation of the right-turn altogether?

If this is true, have those same people considered the economic impact to the city?

It seems that a significant contributing factor to the rapid growth of the Las Vegas area is directly linked to the increase in air traffic, in and out of Las Vegas.

How do we maintain the economic growth without use of the right-turn?

  124. GCS Says:

    Here’s a thought.

I would be interested to know the number of those who oppose the right-turn, who are motorcycle riders.

I notice the noise levels of motorcycles far more than the noise levels of aircraft overhead.

  125. Kathy Butler Says:

Three years ago my family and I moved to Las Vegas and bought a home
outside of Summerlin and the Lakes area…not in either. It was a very
quiet area until March 20 of this year when they reinstated the right
turn path for planes from McCarren. I read all the comments from people
around the valley about the “rich” people in Summerlin and The Lakes and
I thought… are people jealous and vindictive because there are folks out
there who worked hard and had the means to buy a home in a nice, quiet
    area of the valley?

So many of us bought homes because it was a quiet area…if we wanted to
be in a flight path we would have bought in a flight path…simple
logistic. So the folks in the south who are upset bought their homes
knowing they would have a noise issue. We did not.

One of the reasons the noise hotline gave for the reinstatement was to
accommodate the northeast passengers from sitting on the runway 15 extra
minutes. Well, excuse me, but outside of them throwing $200 in a slot
machine and then heading home I don’t see how they should be
accommodated before residents who support, on a daily basis, the city’s
economy by buying homes, securing loans, supporting schools, sports,
    hospitals, doctors etc.

Our quality of life has been so lessened by the noise and low flying
planes, not to mention the absured flight times from six a.m until one
or two a.m. in the morning. We have yet to have an uninterrupted sleep
cycle since this started and we are not retirees where we can nap during
the day, which we couldn’t even do without the noise factor anyway.
Sitting out in our yard is no longer something we look forward to. When
we have someone visiting it’s embarrassing to say “hold that thought
    until the plane flies over”.

C’mon FAA….look beyond yourselves and whoever it is you’re trying to
appease and give people the quality of life they’ve earned!

  126. Keri Says:

As much as I would like to see the right turn eliminated, it probably will not happen. However, I hope that a compromise can be reached limiting the right turn between the hours of 9 A.M. to 9 P.M. so I can get some sleep.

  127. JB Says:

Please do not spend taxpayer money fighting this. Many people move to places where the environment changes and just have to end up moving if they don’t like it. Everyone should not be having to pay for this fight. We could be using this money for education.
Good point about the motorcycles. Maybe those who can’t stand the noise should also start protesting that and on and on and on…

  128. Rich Says:

Every city in America makes an effort to fly there planes over less populated or industrial areas. EXCEPT LAS VEGAS.

I like how the guys who move right next to Nellis say that people who move miles away from Mccarran, when it was not in the flight path, should just take the noise.

The fact is this has nothing to do with growth. Just take 1 look at the sky. More cars go by a busy intersection in one single go around of traffic lights than planes go by in and entire day in the valley. There is no traffic jam in the sky. If there is 50 consecutive flights going south of LV from runway 25, they will ALL TAKE A LEFT HAND TURN. The right hand turn is not some mechanism to relieve conjested skies, it is to relieve airlines of flight distance.

I recently flew to Fort Lauderdale and the flew me many many miles into the sea to make a landing to AVOID flying over populated areas. It felt like I was flying to Spain.

But in LV the County Officials get some sweet deals to make sure there is noise and the airlines save money.

  129. Bonnie Says:

This is how I see the difference between whining and purposly buying IN the flight path, and purposly NOT buying in the flight path.
Why do all of you who dont live out in the nw thinking we are snooty and rich? i am a single mom, one child, and i make average money. I moved here 14 years ago and the first statement I made to the realtor was DO NOT SHOW ME ANYTHING IN THE FLIGHT PATH.
These planes start up very early in the morning about every 3 mins or so, this goes on all day long, then starts up for the redeyes all night long. If your lucky enough to fall asleep, you just get woken up by another plane. To top it off they fly so low you can hear the booming through the airwaves. I get up with my child at 5am, how am I supposed to do that when I get no sleep because planes are waking me up all night?
Why are you saying stop wining? Why if we chose to live AWAY from the flight path can you honestly say that?
I cant believe you all think you have to be wealthy to live in the nw. Are all of you totally screwed up or are you seriously that (i wont say it) less then smart? =)
We chose where to live, The ones who chose to live in the original flight path knew it was there, we who chose not to live on the flight path bought elsewhere (like the nw!)
By the way someone posted we dont own the airspace above our homes, oh yes we do, we own the airspace above to infinity, and we also own below the home to the core.
Eminant Domain is the reason why we are in the situation we are in and it honeslty makes me sick to see people telling us to stop whining. WE MOVED ON THIS SIDE OF TOWN FOR THAT VERY REASON!! So please stop looking at it as whining, we bought here for a reason and that reason, at least for me is to stay away from the golden triangle and the flight paths.
I cant believe some of these comments coming from grown adults. Unreal, but hey, seems like people really could care less about another person and its just getting worse everyday. Watch the news, it never was like this.
sighsssss…I wish they would at least make the dang turn where they are supposed to make it, they are making it over ft apache (rampart) and shouldnt be over peccole ranch at all. Thats where I live, not in Ahem Summerlin.

  130. Rhonda Says:

I am with the FAA.. it doesn’t matter which direction you fly out of the airport, your going to run into population.

    Get over it already!!!

  131. Stuart Ervin Says:

Absolutely allow those in Summerlin to use their money, not ours, to fight right turn. I live in northwest and do not hear commercial jets, ONLY the military as they fly over my house. When I hear the noise, I smile as I am protected. Summerlin should realize that when they hear the right turn noise, their taxes did not go up as the costs was paid by the passenger who departed.

Get over it – there is so many more important items to consider – where can we hire more teachers today with the molesting experience as those poor teachers union security personnel are swamped with finding the illegals we all subsidize – I think a simple $1.00 test would be to put tortillas out for breakfast and lunch and see who takes.

  132. Summerlin Resident Says:

We were told that the reason for the Right-Turn is (1) saving flights’ fuel (2) Growth in the number of flights to the city: In other words, profits mainly for the airlines and the hotels, and related businesses.

The other side of the coin is that people under the new flight path will end paying for their profits.

Many others and I, lose our quite and peace, when we sit in our yards or when we sleep especially when certain flights go right above our homes.

Even worse, the home values (which are basically our life savings) will drop, because it is less desirable to buy a house in a noisy area! Effectively robbing our life savings for your profits! In other words the so called “growth” or corporate profits are on our expenses!

Is the FAA, the Airlines or the Hotels are going to pay us compensation for this growth or parts of their profits? Are you going to eliminate the affected area property taxes?

Growth is not an absolute virtue! It has to be balanced and it should not be on the expense of one group of people for the profit of another group.

If the so called growth and profits are so important, why not let the hotels and airlines build a remote airport, and let those who planned or supported the new flight turn, move their houses there. — At least they it is their choice and they can listen to the music of the flights night and day.

But don’t take away our quite and our money against our will and say that we live in the land of freedom and equal rights. Is this the American way? When did we become a communist country? When did the American constitution allow the robbing of a minority (or individual home owners) for the “good” of the “majority”?

As for most of the voices that support the flight, they either don’t live under the flight path (so, they are not paying for it) or they live under another flight path and want others to suffer just like them! Both are sick reasons! Like I said before, if you support the new flight path so much, feel free to move your homes near the airport, stick to your home, but you have not right to choose for other home owners!

  133. glp Says:

The entire valley has to share in the various “noise pollution” that occurs. It is known as progress. Be it good or bad, depending on your point of view. You want more tourists to travel to Las Vegas, to keep this great economy functioning? How many of you that live in Summerlin use the airport? I bet many of you do. When I go to Las Vegas to shop or play, I just don’t pay attention to the planes flying overhead. I grew up living on Air Force Bases. You haven’t heard airplane noise, until you have a B-52 fly over your head. Even now I have many military aircraft( various jets and helicopters)fly over at all hours. It doesn’t bother me. The ThunderBirds put on a heck of show. Does my house shake and rattle? Sure it does, but I can take it. Anyway, if you want peace and quiet, move from the city. Better yet, sleep with a fan on, the low noise will block out most outside noise, including airplanes, that fly higher than the planes that fly over my house. You guys come across as a bunch of big babies.

  134. Chrystelle Says:

I am about done listening to people telling me what i should or shouldn’t complain about…it is my RIGHT to not accept this situation without a fight. And if the 1st fight is lost then we’ll move on to the 2nd one….we absolutely can’t let this happen to people. To those of you who think it is just a little bit of noise, pls do not assume anything. This is hell! Our house is on the market and people are horrified when they ear the noise level. We can’t move, we can’t live in this house anymore (we need SLEEP) so if you think we are just going to be quiet…

  135. larry southard Says:

Did the Hughes Corp. have anything to do with this? Now with Summerlin mostly sold out they can give back their deal with the FAA. It sound as though someone did make a deal with the FAA. I sure can’t see that it is a safety issue, I now see and hear a bunch more small aircraft flying over my place, a bunch more single engine planes, what is this all about? That can’t be safer. Yes I think the City should spend the money to fight this crap.

  136. Jan Says:

When all the planes turned LEFT, where did people think they went- into thin air? No, the planes went over the folks in the SW part of the valley. We all need to share in the burden that McCarran brings as well as the wealth of tourists it also brings.
Turning RIGHT also creates more airspace, less time wasted waiting on taxiways, thus better for the environment. We had Right turns in the 1990’s and McCarran can only expand if we allow Right turns as well as Left in the future. If you want economic prosperity, we all will need to live with aircraft noise in our valley.
Someday, the new airport at Jean may provide some relief for all Valley residents- Thats the project people should be pushing for development.

  137. Nick Says:

What I want to know about all these people in Summerlin is if the noise of airplanes 10,000 feet over their houses bother them, then why don’t they get pissed off about all these motorcycles with no exhaust pipes running around rattling windows.

Maybe we should spend some money on fighting loud pile of junk Harley’s.

  138. JOE GUZMAN Says:

    Mr Goodman:
I have an idea. People who live in Summerlin already pay an extra fee to the City for keeping their streets clean and manicured.
Why don’t your treasurer charge them an extra fee to pay for the lawyers to fight for them? I think many people there can write you a few $300,000 checks out of their trust accounts!

  139. glp Says:

I think if the residents of Summerlin or going to waste hard earn taxpayer money on fighting the FAA, the rest of the people who live in the Las Vegas area has every right to tell you guys to live with it. Again, everyone else in the valley lives with various noises on a daily basis. What makes you people so special. Nothing.

  140. LUCILLE Says:

SO WHAT Summerlin IS PART OF NEVADA, GET USE TO IT, NO BIG DEAL! ALL OF THE REST OF US PAY TAXES, Summerlin ISN’T SPECIAL GET OVER YOURSELVES, BESIDES THEY WAY YOU ACT YOU MUST BE THE ONLYONES USEING THE PLANS SO ENJOY!

  141. Matthew Masur Says:

I live in colorado and go to las vegas every once in a while to visit my uncle in henderson. The planes are noisy there also!! It was so noisy in fact I asked my uncle how he lives with it. He said that he doesnt notice them unless they “throttle down” over his house. He lives under the approach path to McCarren. Vegas is a valley city, so everything is going to be amplified no matter where anybody lives. I do know its a hundered times worse in the NW valley. Well when Ivanpah airport opens down the road, it will relieve some congestion. Until then, McCarren and the D-gates will keep on expanding leading to more congestion and noise. Im truely sorry for the man who cant sleep at night because of noisy airplanes. give me your opinion
    matt

  142. Rodman88 Says:

I dont believe that the City of Las Vegas, Clark County, or the State of Nevada guarenteed those under the right hand turn flight path a quiet serene lifestyle. If they were indeed guarenteed this life style maybe these crybabies ought to go to their builder or real estate agent and see how much their tears mean to them. Afterall they are the people who built and sold the Summerlin idiots there homes.

  143. Daniel Says:

I don’t see the issue. Almost every plane that takes off from McCarran flys over my apartment all day long, and 99% I don’t even hear. And that’s with living in an apartment with paper thin walls. This is not worth taxpayers money to fight an issue that is not going to change no matter how much you yell about it. The “People’s Republic” will just have to realize that they live in a urban area and this is part of it.

  144. Janet Fuller Says:

Let’s set the facts straight. Many, many of the people who are affected by the right hand turn do not live in Summerlin! So please quit referring to us as “Summerlin cry babies”. Also, we’re not talking about one or two planes overhead folks…We’re talking about one plane after another. It’s impossible to get a decent nights sleep. They fly overhead as late as 1 or 2:00 AM and start again at 6:00 AM. Yesterday (sunday morning) they started at 5:50 AM !!I’m all for growth in the city, etc. What I don’t understand is why the FAA is not willing to at least offer a compromise so we can at least get some sleep!

  145. Richard J Says:

I see so many people jealous of personal wealth. Its bad out here in vegas, if you have money all of the people who came out here to make a million and did not have a hoorible anger problem.
