English is now the official language of Pahrump. The town board passed an English-only ordinance after heated and emotional debate Tuesday night. Critics called the ordinance racist. It’s author, a town board member, says they are sending a message. What’s your take? Scroll down to the end of the blog to post your comment.

  1. Dale Andrus Says:

We should have a state law for English as offical language. How much taxpayer money is used for printing welfare,DMV, paperwork? And anything that is printed in any other language. Someone needs to stand up and do the right thing. Hats off to Pahrump.

  2. Anne Brew Says:

I strongly support an “English only” movement. I bitterly resent the Spanish Language ballot.

  3. Susan Says:

This is a “no brainer”. Why does any town in America need to pass an ordinance to make English the official language. That IS the offical language. For those who come here outside our borders no matter what country they call home, their obligation is to learn our language and be able to read and write it. America is an almost an entire country of immigrants. Remember Ellis Island? Those poeple who came here made it a priority to learn the language of their new country and teach their children as well. What is happening to this country when so many store shelve products and street signs are in Spanish? Has anyone been to Miami lately? If you are English speaking your are stuck. Most of the street signs are in Spanish. It’s time for all Americans to start and take the country back, “When in Rome…..”. This has absolutely nothing to do with racisim as so many would love to shout. This is America and the mother tongue is English. If you want to live here and flourish, learn our language and use it.

  4. Destiny Says:

I don’t mind people speaking their native language. It would be a lot easier for those of us that don’t know any other languages to get a job.

  5. P. Shull Says:

The wimpy politions should of done this 20 years ago.

  6. Elizabeth Bartholomew Says:

I personally do not think this is a racial issue what so ever. English is the language of the United States and if you truly want to be an American, you need to learn the language spoken here. It really erks me to walk into a retail establishment and see nothing but packaging and directional signs hanging from the ceiling written in both english and spanish. Why should english speaking americans have to change their lifestyles to accomadate spanish speaking immigrents who have no intention of becoming citizens? Learn the language, become a citizen and everyone will be happy in the end.

  7. Lyn Tompkins Says:

I’m not happy that Society has forced Spanish on America.

If you live or visit another country, even Mexico, we as foreigners are required to speak the language of that country.

If Mexicans want to make a better life for themselves here in the USA, then wouldn’t learning to speak the American language be one of those steps, instead of forcing American Citizens to accept their language? People rarely can get a job anymore if they do not speak Spanish.

If foreigners are so unhappy here, then go back to your country that you so are trying to force on American’s.

I would say this is caused by our laws In America. We have too many freedoms and rights and people are learning how to circumvent the system and laws to get what they want.

  8. mark Says:

Its funny the guy on your Pahrump broadcast says its racism. When all morning channel 8 has been broadcasting the Hispanic Breakfest job fair for Hispanic High School kids. I guess the African American, White, Asian children are excluded. No racism here, right. So much for no child left behind

  9. PAF Says:

AWE COME ON…THEY’RE ILLEGAL..THIS ISN’T RACEING…IT IS RED, WHITE, BLUE AMERICAN. TRY GOING OVER TO GERMANY, THEY’LL BE ROUGHER ON ONE WHO DOESN’T SPEAK THEIR LANGUAGE. ENGLISH FIRST. OK, FINE, IGNORE THIS WHOLE WORDING. JUST WAIT UNTIL NEXT ELECTIONS, WHEN THE WORD GETS MOBILIZED AND THE INITIATIVE IS GIVEN AND VOTED ON AND TURNED SO THAT SPANISH IS THE MAIN LANGUAGE. IT GOT VOTED, IT GOT PASSED, NOW WHAT? YOU HAD YOUR CHANCE WHEN THEY WERE WALKING DOWN THE STRIP WITH THEIR HOME FLAGS, WHY COULDN’T THEY BE TAKEN TO THOMAS AND MACK AND PROCESSED…INSTEAD IT IS UP TO THE ICE TEAMS. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, WHEN WILL RED, WHITE, BLUE STAND UP? JUST SAY, “NO”!

  10. Lisa Says:

I think this is great, everyone should be required to speak English. I am getting sick of the fact that we have to bend over for all these immigrants from other countries. When you go to live in another country you have to learn THEIR language WHY NOT HERE? Why do we have to cater to them and not the American people who have been here for years and took pride in becoming an American the LEGAL way? If people are offended by this then they can go live somewhere else! More communities should stand up for the American people like this. I commend Pahrump for this.

  11. John Says:

Its amazing how weak Nevada is on illegal immigration, soon we will be
Mexivada. Mexifornia has allready been invaded by this illegal invasion of America.. At least Arizona is doing something the voters passed the ENGLISH ONLY bill
which includes fines to renters whom rent to illegals. I am glad to see Pahrump step up to the plate. The ACLU and the Mexican Consulate have no regard to illegal immigration…

  12. Elizabeth Catenacci Says:

I was born and raised in Las Vegas, and I am of hispanic descent, but it is getting ridiculous! You cannot go any where without people speaking spanish. I donnot speak spanish and it is getting harder now days to do the everyday tasks because of this. For instance I went to get gas the other day on the corner of Bonanza and Lamb. I asked the clerk if they sold stamps and she pointed to the atm machine. Just assuming she new what I was talking about I walked over to the atm machine looking for that option on the machine. It didn’t offer that, and she didn’t speak english. Then I asked to get gas I could not get gas, they were having problems with the gas machines and everything in the station was broken. I left furious!!! and got my gas somewhere else. As an American and a native of Las Vegas, I expect everyone to speak the same language so that we don’t have these problems. Life’s already to stressful without having to learn a new language. We started with english they need to speak english. If we were to go to Mexico do you think they would cater to us like we are doing to them? No! We have specialty license plates for Mexicans, we have different versions of tests in Mexican so they can get there drivers licenses, and other benefits, and if your bi-lingual you get paid more, there’s more jobs. We are not standing our ground on alot on these issues. This is turning into Mexico.

  13. Mickey Hannula Says:

I am proud of pahrump for taking this stand, I wish more cities and states would do the same, this is America , follow the law and speak English

  14. MICHELLE M Says:

I THINK IT IS A GREAT IDEA. IT IS NOT DISCRIMINATION. LET ME SAY I AM NOT AGAINST PEOPLE COMING HERE TO BETTER THEIR LIVES. BUT COME HERE AND LEARN THE LANGUAGE WHICH IS ENGLISH!!! WE SPEND TOO MUCH MONEY IN TAXES ETC WASTING OUR RESOURCES, SCHOOL DOLLARS ETC TO CATER TO; AND PRINT INFO IN SPANISH!! WHY?? IF MORE TOWNS AND AGENCIES ETC WOULD ADAPT THIS POLICY PEOPLE WOULD BE FORCED TO LEARN OUR LANGUAGE. WE NEED TO QUIT MAKING IT SO EASY FOR THEM NOT TO. AND THEY ARE THE ONES THAT NEED TO TEACH THEIR CHILDREN ENGLISH NOT DRAINING OUR SCHOOL BUDGET HAVING TO HIRE EXTRA TEACHERS AND CONDUCTING SPECIAL CLASSROOMS. THAT RIDICULOUS. WOULD THEY DO THE SAME FOR US?? I THINK NOT. BOTTOM LINE: LEARN THE LANGUAGE; BE A PRODUCTIVE CITIZEN AND CONTRIBUTE TO THIS COUNTRY; NOT DRAIN OUR RESOURCES.

  15. Chris Wood Says:

English is the official language, and it has nothing to do with racism. You should be able to walk into any shop, store or restaurant and not feel you are in another country. Reminder we are in America.

    Las Vegas

  16. Pam Says:

It’s not a question of racism-it’s simple common sense & economics. How many companies & even our schools HAVE to hire bilingual employees to accomodate the non-English speaking population? They get upset because they call or come in to an office & no one at that office speaks their language. That shouldn’t be our problem! Either speak English or bring someone with you who does!!If I went to another country, I would expect to learn at least enough of that language to communicate at the basic level. In America…WE SPEAK ENGLISH!!

  17. John Holliday Says:

Arizona passed the English Only bill.. I am glad to see Pahrump has stepped up to the plate. Our illegal invasion of America is getting out of control its about time Nevada is waking-up, at least parts of Nevada.

  18. P. Lee Says:

People who speaks English are usually the white majority. An English-only language provision discriminates against all non-white. Backers of this provision say is will stop illegal immigration are only fooling themselves. This is a step backward in society. Its a smoke screen akin to the ‘Jim Crow’ laws of the past. People always want to take the easy way out and look at other persons physical appearance and tell them to learn English.
Why don’t people look deep into themselves and say ‘We can also learn their language’. But they don’t want to learn because they feel its too difficult. Behind it all there are hypocrites. Wonder how many people who voted for Jim Gibbons backs this language provision. Polly Gonzalez would adamantly oppose this measure. She probably learned and spoke Spanish first. No law mandated to her she had to learn English.

  19. Karen Says:

I don’t think there is anything wrong with making English the official language. We don’t go to Mexico and expect everyone to speak our language so why should we be expected to cater to other nationalities speaking other languages?! No one makes the choice for them to come to the USA but them and if they aren’t willing to learn the language then maybe they should stay where they are. Nobody is saying they can’t speak Spanish in their homes.

I have seen so many jobs that REQUIRE the applicant to be able to speak Spanish as well as English and I think it’s a shame that citizens of this country are limited on employment if they can’t speak Spanish.

Think of how difficult it is for teachers who have children in their classes who don’t know any English and they are expected to teach them. They are held accountable by the no child left behind act and at the same time have their hands tied behind their back because of the language barrier.

In my opinion, it’s shameful that they expect everyone to learn their language just because they CHOSE to come here to make their home. I have no problem with immigration but don’t feel it’s right for them to expect special treatment once they get here.

  20. Richard Brunner Says:

If Mr. Miraglia wants to send a stong message of any kind then maybe it should be to ban legalized prostitution in Pahrump. How do they explain to their children that prostitutes are welcome in Pahrump, as long as they speak English. I wonder how Mr. Miraglia’s anscestors would have fared, when they arrived in this country, in a town with a mindset that is blatantly racist.

  21. Karen Says:

I have a question in response to the comment about it being blatantly racist for them to pass the ordinance for “English Only” in Pahrump. First of all WHAT DOES PROSITUTION HAVE TO DO WITH IT?! Second, why aren’t you crying about the racism being shown to whites, blacks, native americans, etc. who are NOT invited or involved in the Latin Career Day? To me that is BLATANTLY RACIST in favor of latin students. Why don’t they have a career day for ALL nationalities????

  22. Esperanza Says:

Lets be serious, this is not about “ILLEGALS” it’s about Peoples “Rights”. I have the “Right” to speak Spanish if I so desire. Wake up!! that my Friends is the issue. I wish Mexican people would unite and Boycott any Establishment showing this type of Racist Inclinations, because once you get past the phoney Community concerns, you will find Racial Discrimination is what’s driving this issue. I have no argument with English being the Primary Language in the Country, but it should not be the only Language Spoken. If English speaking People choose not to add another Language to their list of achivements it’s their problem. People forget we are suppose to cater to our Tourism Industry. Tourist come here from all over the World. Spanish speaking skills are required in most Businesses. Speaking Spanish is essential, in this very large market, matter of fact, Latinos bring Millions of Dollars yearly to our Community and Industry. There are ways of Addressing Issues in our Community, but, this is hardly one of them. Instead of having a negative attitude about this, we should help in anyway we can. Always remember be “NICE”, it works.

  23. Lana Fierro Says:

I am all for the English only. I only wish it would apply everywhere. We, as Americans, would have to learn their language. Why are the hispanics the only ones that can’t or won’t learn the language. Not right!!The biggest thing that irritates me are the classifieds in the newspaper wanting “biliguel only/Spanish preferred.” Talk about reverse discrimination.

  24. Mike H Says:

Everyone is stupid. Might as well make the official language German, it’ll have the exact same effect.

  25. Mark Says:

About time, to those who think that this is racism and Jim Crow, you are DELUSIONAL and have been brainwashed by fearmongering in the Spanish speaking media. Also isn’t it already Illegal for illegals to work in America and the mexican government needs to mind its own business and clean out its own backyard before pointing the finger at us. I think that this ordinance has become necessary due to the complete arrogance and laziness of many Spanish speakers who refuse to learn the language of this country. That in itself is racist, because they see English as inferior. The success of this country is due to having one common language which is the English language. Learning our language will help people become a part of that success.

  26. Paul Says:

We need to do more than this, we need to stop companies from requiring bi-lingual candidates, unless the job deals directly with Latin American countries. For example house cleaning or customer service. This unfairly discriminates against non-hispanics and is racist. Of course you don’t hear the Spanish speakers on this board complaining about anything that gives them an an unfair advantage over English only speakers

  27. Richard Brunner Says:

In response to Karen, I find prostitution, legal or otherwise, much more offensive than speaking Spanish. If Pahrump wants to be a model of patriotism maybe they should start there. What is the point of enacting a law that cannot be enforced? Maybe the same as faking an orgasm? Because it makes the other person feel better?

  28. Ron P Says:

Hello, morons, is anybody home. If they insist on making their city English only they will have to change the name of their city. And might as well come up with a new name for the state.

  29. R. Daniels Says:

First: How many of you speak “english”? What you speak is a far cry from what your homeland Englanders speak! Why is it that you feel the need to pass a law to make England’s language ours? Is it so out of the question to have a bit of tolerance for the many cultures that live here? Perhaps if you Englanders would read what is written at the base of the statue of liberty, you would realize that we are made of virtually every culture in the world, not just merry old England!
Most of the Spanish people that live here have at least a basic command of “english”. How many of you speak Spanish or the American languages, Navajo, Ute, Hualapai ?

  30. Maria Watson Says:

Well I was born and raise here in United States but I am proud to Mexican/American both me and my children talk English as well as Spanish we our proud of our roots I’m sure if the white man could talk another language when would. Oh and by the way I am married to a white white man.

  31. Barbara Lampkin Says:

I agree with the ones that are for the USA and there state making english the one we speak here. Were I live it looks like mexico and all you hear is spanich. You can not get a job unless you speak spanich, its not right.

The town is small and there are only mexican places to shop.
The school has mybe 10 white kids in school and the rest is mexican.
There are so many illegals here and more coming every day. No one does any thing because of the gangs.

If you do or say anything then you get the gangs after you and look out. This is a very scareie thing the drugs are all over the place. I dont understand why our goverment is not standing up for us. I think the goverment is in with the drug dealers. Something smell bad…

  32. L F Says:

Being of Hispanic descent myself, I agree with English being the official language ,but what’s wrong with other languages ? they add to our culture just like french or italian just look around or go to a movie different cultures add to the mix remember ” hasta la vista baby ” or ” deja vu ” etc. ?
let’s face it it’s not about what language you speak it’s about who you like, do you think the casinos force their big whales like Japanese or Arab gamblers to speak english ? I don’t think so.. do they accomodate for them in their native language ? you bet they do.
I am sure any of you guys/gals would be trying very hard to speak spanish if you met a hot colombian or mexican chick/ guy at a party .

    Let’s keep it real.

    L F

  33. Mary R Says:

I’m all for the english language ordinance. We should even take it a step further and make it mandatory to speak the english language to live here in the USA. No other countries cater to the Americans.
I have even been turned down for jobs that I was very well suitable for, due to the fact that I didn’t speak spanish. Where are my rights?

  34. CN Says:

I was born here in Las Vegas I’am of Cuban American orgin and what I have to say is that this is the United States Of America this country is of the english language it is very good what Parump wants to do becouse all of the immigrants need to speak english becouse more and more jobs are requiring that you speak it. The immigrants have no right to think that they can go by this and if they don’t like the laws we make here then they should go back to their home country becouse this is not their country to run or order around.

  35. Barb Johnston Says:

It is about time We the USA take a stand. It’s our history all those who came to the “melting pot” learned to speak English, HAD A JOB and or sponsor. Not so today, we are just going back to our roots.

I would like to see NOT ONE PAPER for ANY USA Government is in anything other than English !

If we have a lot of USA citizens move to Mexico do they want to change to english !

  36. JJP Says:

“I wish Mexican people would unite and Boycott any Establishment showing this type of Racist Inclinations” I wish you would do that and do it in mexico! Let’s get this on our next battot. Way to go Pahrump.

  37. dk Says:

IT’S ABOUT TIME THEY START HAVING THINGS FORCED ON THEM. THEY ALREADY HAVE TAKEN OVER THE HOSPITALS, STORES, WELFARE OFFICE, COLLECTING FOOD STAMPS FOR KIDS THEY CAN’T AFFORD TO PAY AND KEEP GETTING KNOCKED UP. WELFARE FUNDS AND FOOD STAMPS NEED TO BE TAKEN AWAY NOW IF THEY KEEP BECOMING PREGNANT. THEY ARE RUDE. I AM TIRED OF GETTING HIT WITH BABY STROLLERS EVERYTIME I TURN AROUND AND MOSTLY LISTENING TO THE SPANISH CRAP-OL-A. LEARN ENGLISH OR GO BACK TO MEXICO. THIS IS MY COUNTRY, NOT YOURS. QUIT ACTING LIKE WE OWE YOU THE WORLD.

  38. Dennis K Says:

OH YES, I FORGOT!! THE JOB ISSUE. I AM SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO TIRED OF HAVING DOORS SLAMMED IN MY FACE BECAUSE I DO NOT SPEAK ENGLISH. NOW THE MIDDLE CLASS CAN’T GET WORK. ALL THE MIDDLE CLASS JOBS ARE GOING TO THE ILLEGALS FOR A 1/3 OF THE PAY I WOULD EARN.

NOW I DON’T HAVE WORK. I SAY FINE ALL OF THE EMPLOYERS.

THE POLITICIANS ARE ALL FULL OF IT TOO. THEY WERE ALL SAYING THEY WERE AGAINST IMMIGRANTS AND THEN QUIETLY TRYING TO HUSSLE THE MEXICAN VOTE. HOW 2 FACED??

WE ALL KNOW LAS VEGAS GOVERNMENT IS ALL CROOKED AND CORRUPTED!!!!

  39. Pete Says:

Fantastic! The hypersensitive, perpetually offended need to stop screaming (in English)… This is about making it easier to do business. Why do I, a Native American (Not aboriginal), have to accommodate those coming here? If I were to move to one of the “third world hell holes” they come from, I would have to learn their language to do business… They’re coming here (mostly illegally) to get what we have. They need to do what we do… Speak ENGLISH, even if they speak poorly, they’re better off… They’re starting the process of assimilation, which is a good thing!

  40. Jax Says:

First, the Pahrump town leaders are stupid for enacting an ordinance that isn’t going to stand up to judicial scrutiny.

Second, a state law like this would cripple our economy. Hispanics are making the beds, cooking the meals, and cleaning up the casinos that drive this state. And they’re doing it while speaking Spanish.

Third, how can you guys be so hell bent on keeping this state English only when you butcher it so badly? It’s called a comma people, learn how to use it…

And fourth, this is about racism. Everyone hoots and hollers about English only and not speaking Spanish, but no one gives a damn about non-English speaking Chinatown… No one cares that the Gold Coast puts up billboards in Mandarin… Don’t kid yourself, this is about hate and this is about racism.

  41. Kathryn Says:

I live in Elkhart, Indiana. I wish we could say “English” here. We have so many Haspanic people here that our Catholic Churches have to have a Mass of their own, they are so many. They cater to the Haspanic people here. When will it stop?

  42. Joy Gloria Says:

I don’t understand what the big issue is, what happened to freedom of speech, they may be your so called illegal aliens but a lot of companies have benefitted from them due to the fact that they are cheap labor. To me as long as they are not hurting anyone, we actually should help them, instead of crucifying them. This people are not terrorists, they’re just people who wants to work hard to have a better life not just for themselves but moreso for their family. We are so persistent to help Iraq to be a better country, but then again, we refuse to help Mexicans, I love the United States of America because they give people a chance but does this only apply to certain people? Bottom line, the Mexicans are not taking jobs away from americans, the only problem is that they are willing to work for less not matter what kind of job, to have the chance to better themselves. What’s funny is, we love to eat and say the name of their food but we can’t accept that they speak the language…

  43. Joe Says:

This is just a small step to taking back our multi ethnic country. Small cities are making the effort, but until the big cities stop being so Politically Correct and look out for the nation as a whole, things will continue to go south.

  44. DT Says:

I am a native of Las Vegas, however I got to see a lot of the states due to my spouses military career and the last state we resided in was New Mexico where the language is “English” and there are no discussions about it being anything else! Except for a few neighborhoods the signs and all services are in English and no one in the state caters to illegal immigrants-could it be that that is why they have moved here to find a more accepting atmosphere – The have realised in New Mexico what we have failed to realise, that illegals cost a state money even if they are filling jobs most employers say Americans won’t.

  45. KCH Says:

Hey guys…this debate is not on being racist. I have no problems with people holding on to their origins. I am as white as they come, but I also have an appreciation for culture from all over the world. All the city did was declare a national language…they never stated that citizens are not permitted to speak their native tounge…to do would be racist and violating. At the same time though, I have traveled to many countries, and yes you need to know their language in order to visit, or even live as I did in Germany. I had to teach myself German just to shop. Why should American cater. If people want to live here, then great, just learn our language. I don’t know how many times I have gone to get my nails done and the little nail techs are just rattling off their native language. To me that makes me feel quite uncomfortable…how do I know what they are saying, and are they even talking about me? Let’s teach English to those who come here, but not take away their native tounge…it is equally beautiful!!!

  46. KAR Says:

Hats off to Pahrump!! This is not racist; English is the language of the United States and if anyone wants to immigrate here, then they need to adjust to our customs, not the other way around. I get so frustrated when I hear people speaking Spanish and see signs in English and Spanish. How much of our taxpayer money goes to printing publications in languages other than English?? I understand people want to come to this country for a better life but they need to assimilate to our culture if they want the benefit of living in the United States.

  47. Frank Romero Says:

Its time our elected officials at all levels of government should get this point: That the legal citizens of this country want illegal immigration to end! If harsh measures are needed, so be it-because the longer this issue remains a problem, the more complex and expensive it becomes to fix in the future. Stop rewarding those who break the law, both illegals and employers!

  48. Ann Johnston Says:

Pahrump shines in Nevada. This small rural town took a GIANT STEP forward, and is showing the world, this is America!

Today, immigrants are unlike those in the past the come to American breaking the laws. Would you go into a new friend’s home and first thing break something? This is what has come to be “normal” and it is time we go back to the basics and the laws on the books!

Remember our forefathers who came here via Ellis Island in New York? Remember they had to speak some English, they had to have health checks, and they had to have funds to live on. We are not asking for anything new just what “Normal” to come to America.

Is Iraq printing in English? Our AMERICAN Veterans die for their freedom, should they have a country with English. Germany, France, Norway, they are not changing to English. Mexico is still a non English Country for their official papers.

We are just asking citizen of Pahrump, legal citizen to honor our country and our customs. We have not said do not have your native language at home you can have both, yet towns, counties State and the USA should have 100 % of everything in ENGLISH! If you want it in another language YOU pay to have it translated.

Our flag is to be given up most respect, fly it with the rules associated with it or do not fly any flag. In America The AMERICAN FLAG IS FIRST! Remember; with the right of our flag and citizenship come the responsibilities to fly, fold and light it correct!

What a savings for DMV, elections department ENGLISH ONLY nothing else. We do need to fight for our American rights here in the USA, and Pahrump Town Board made the first of many steps others will follow.

Taxpayers of the USA this can save MILLIONS a year lets all have English only for any printing or department paid for in anyway with any tax from US Citizen! Non English residents need to pay to have it translated, just like today if a Citizen of the USA buys any book or printed material from another land, nothing new or different. ONLY THE SAME FOR THE USA, we need to take care of our homeland FIRST, & our English Language!

  49. S.Ogle Says:

I feel if the Spanish speaking community is offended by our stand, then that right there just proves that they are here for the wrong reasons! If they “love” it here, then by god “be here”not there.I am tired of wondering in the back of my mind, are we a racist country?Let’s see how far we get, if we English speaking people go to Mexico, and cry racism if they don’t put english on their documents. Then we will see who the real racists are!I feel that we have been overly generous to these people.I used to Live in Los Angeles, this is a real huge problem, and it is out of control.Hats of to Pahrump!I think this country is tired of guilt brought on by these people(most of which are illegal, and breaking our laws daily).I say to,”go back”,you can speak and read all of the Spanish you want there. That’s just the way it is,this is America,I don’t see an X in that any where,do you?

  50. Chad Says:

The first amendment grants me the right to speak as I choose.

  51. Bill Petty Says:

If our Federal Government were doing it’s job the official language of the United State’s would be English!!!! Cities across the USA are passing simular ordinance’s. Will any State have the gut’s to pass a law making the english language the official language of the State???

  52. Joyce Butterfield Says:

I believe the English language should be first in America. It is our native tongue. I don’t have a problem with Spanish or any other language, but I definetely feel like if you are in America as a legal citizen English first. I would not expect any less of myself if I went to another Country I would do my best to speak their language at least enough to communicate in their Country.

  53. Christina Mettke Says:

i believe that all American states should be English only… regardless of the languages that are spoken in the privacy of their home.

  54. R.Daniels Says:

Pahrump? Better change that name! It’s not “english”. How about Cal-Vada? NO! That’s Spanish!!Maybe Hillbillyshire or Olde Covington Cross, hey what?

  55. Mike P. Says:

I think every country is allowed to have one official language, but the sorry officials in our government won’t dedicate to it, so our local governments have to make the stand. Hooray for Pahrump!

Does this mean that the ‘independent contractors’ in the cathouses have to moan in English only though? Now that is a real issue too.

  56. Jan Barnowsky Says:

I totally support the Pahrump ordinance – but why does any City in the US have to have an ordinance to say English. Watching last night I saw a restuarant owner mentioning that his restuarant is Italian. OK, if you want to fly an Italian flag fine – is there a problem with also flying a US flag. I do not believe that this is discrimination in any manner, shape, or form. THE ACLU SHOULD MIND THEIR OWN BUSINESS – REMEMBER THIS IS THE SAME ORGANIZATION THAT WANTS NO MERRY CHRISTMAS CARDS – THEY CHOOSE TO FORGET WHAT CHRISTMAS IS REALLY ALL ABOUT!!!!!!!

  57. Cathie Says:

Perhaps we need to honor the TRUE Natives and make Ute the Language of Nevada and Utah. Lakota the language of the Dakotas, Navajo and Apache for the South West ect. They were the first languages NOT ENGLISH. Not only is that fair it’s more appropriate. As for the spanish language. Do not hire spanish speaking people and make them speak “your” language and join “your” churches.

  58. Ryan Says:

    Pahrump:

    Get your values in order:

Whores or English & Flag waving?

  59. Bob Danelski Says:

I think the passage of English Only in Pahrump is great. Maybe the entire USA will follow!

  60. Ryan Says:

It’s times like this Nevada backs up the fact they are the most uneducated state in the country.

  61. L.L. Las Vegas, NV Says:

Thanks Pahrump! English should be the language in all “AMERICA”. Everyone should speak english, especially at work and in public. We Americans were not “born free”, we have had to earn it; the wars that our fathers, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters and mothers have fought to get us to where we are today. How soon so many people forget the heartbreak and anguish Americans have gone through to be free. Yet we turn around and help other countries that need help but when do they in turn help us??
I am “so tired” of being asked if I would like Engish or Spanish when I make a call, get mail at home or even have to look at something that gives me the option. I usually just toss it away. When are we going to stop with the spanish or other language options and demand that anyone who comes to America must speak “ENGLISH”?

  62. C. Sampson Says:

I have lived all over the world, and no one spoke english to me in the other countries. In Spain, I had to learn spanish, to shop or work, or have a conversation with anyone. If you live in the U.S. you should speak english!! I don’t see anything racial about this. Alright Pahrump!!!!!

  63. Sally W. Says:

It is about time someone says something. We shouldn’t ever walk into an American Chain like Walmart or McDonalds and be greeted by someone that can’t understand a word of English!! Very Frustrating that we are letting these illegals “Take Over”. These are also people that are not immunized. I think a lot more mysterious illness will pop up in the near future because of these people.

  64. Veronica Says:

I think that having an english only town is against what our fathers fought for “LIBERTY”, liberty to speak liberty to do as we wish, were so harsh to critize Iraq, and all the middle eastern countries but yet were doing the same. Why should it be english only ? America was built on immigrants, and the diferent cultures that have united. I think it is in a way racial, because they are mainly targeting the hispanic community and their spanish language. Im Mexican American and let them try to stop me from speaking spanish. Im sure that German Americans, Italian Americans and any one else who shares a diferent culture will be outraged at such ignorance. We need to Focus on Better issues, and leave the pettiness behind !!

  65. Julie Says:

I say it is about time. My parents came to America in the 60’s and became citizens and learned to speak English. We still speak Italian at home to this day but my parents were not accomodated with forms or drivers’ tests in Italian. When they spoke Italian in public, it was frowned upon. The Federal government needs to establish a national language and we need to stop accomodating people who earn our American money but refuse to become citizens or to speak the language that has been spoken here since the Pilgrims first arrived. Speak what you want at home but speak English at work, etc. Also, the American flag should be flown with other flags. If you like the American $$$$ than you should be fly the American flag with whatever other flag. We are not saying to renounce your heritage, but to announce and be proud of the country you live in! Proud to be an American.

  66. Patricia Says:

    God Bless America !!
This is America and America speaks “English”. Learn english if you want to live with us and make sure you’re here “legally”. If we were in any other country and can’t speak their language and we protested they would tell us to leave if we didn’t like it. This has nothing to do with what color our skin is, America has it all.
So, quit your belly aching and speak English, if you don’t like it, then leave.

  67. Smith Says:

How sad it is that we have to waste precious money, resources and time on this issue. What a joke, people, you live in the United States of America and that is a priviledge. The language that we speak is English, this isn’t a new concept. I applaud Pahrump for taking a stand, but how pathetic they are being attacked. I have been in Las Vegas all my life and I am so sick of the people who come here and try to change our city. If you are illegal and live in Las Vegas and actually have the nerve to attack this issue then why don’t you go back to Mexico? Guess what if you live in Mexico you can speak Spanish freely. Why do you stay here? Please do us all a favor and leave. I say “Merry Christmas” not “Happy Holidays”, I say “one nation under God”, and I say we speak English the official language of the United States of America. Great job Pahrump!

  68. pgt Says:

You know, I read about the name of our town, Pahrump, name here, name there.
We’re not talking about names, we’ll talking about speaking a language – English- in America. If you say “Pahrump”, say it in english, now say it in spanish or German or whatever, what different does it make. Who care what you name your child, your streets, your town, your city, etc. SO WHAT !
As far as the illegal immigrants, I’m tired of supporting you and your famil-IES. I worked hard for my money, educations and my country. It made me sick to see my daughter seeking help with the welfare because she’s unemployed due to illness and was refused medical assist because she is NOT a mexican, pregnant with lots of kids. How sick is that? Sorry, immigrants, until you learn to speak English and become an American Citizen, you’re welcome to our English spoken country.
One more thing, try pulling this crap in any other countries and see how far you’ll with them, hope you can get out of there alive. No offense, but the other countries has their rights, just like we do.
So, get a life and move on.

  69. Gianna Says:

I am a NYC born Latina. The original US melting pot. I am fluent in both English and Spanish, thanks to my parents and grandparents. I also speak some Italian and French. I don’t speak ‘Spanglish’ or English with an accent. My parents came here when they were teenagers, legally, and both are fluent in English. My grandparents, while not fluent are able to communicate in English and understand a lot. I’m very proud of my heritage, I feel I represent what America was founded on. My Puerto Rican, Ecuadorean, Spaniard, Italian, Incan, and Taino roots have influenced who I am today. I have lived and travelled all over the world. One thing I can say, every country I’ve ever been in has their ‘official’ language. In Brussels, Belgium, the official language is French, but since there are a large amount of people who speak Flemish, there are also Flemish street signs. Everyone speaks at least 3 languages, FLUENTLY, even the subway clerks. While I agree, the US should have ENGLISH as their official language (and this should be enforced), Americans could stand to build up their language skills. The ‘Ugly American Tourist’ stereotype exists for a reason. Having lived abroad, I was often quite embarrassed when observing my fellow Americans insist on English-speaking store clerks in France, Italy, Belgium, and countless other countries. A lot of times these ‘Mexicans’ as everyone seems to use the word with disdain, are hard-working people who would love nothing more than to be able to speak english. I call them ‘The Invisible Ones’ because people walk past them day after day, without a smile or a word, or even acknowledgement that they exist. Many have left their families behind and are alone in this country. A simple smile requires no language and costs nothing. So maybe if we were a little friendlier, a little more empathetic, these people would be encouraged to reach out a try to communicate and learn ‘America’s language’. And remember AMERICA consists of Canada, the United States, MEXICO AND Central & South America.

  70. Susan Says:

If only the Federal Government would make a stand and force the issue of “English” only.

Do you have any idea how much money is spent printing documents in both English and Spanish? Look at our recent ballots.

People gripe about their tax dollars being wasted, but its okay to waste those dollars by printing twice as many documents so the “Hispanic” population doesn’t have to learn to speak English?

I’m sick and tired of my son having to be in an overfilled classroom. A classroom that is overfilled only because HALF of the seats are filled with non-English speaking students.

I’ve read all of the previous comments and came to realize that only a sparse few disagreed with Pahrump. Shame on you. Move to Mexico. We won’t miss you.

I applaud Pahrump for making a stand. Las Vegas’ authorities don’t have the grit, integrity, or morals to make such a stand.

  71. Wendye Says:

I’m very glad to see all of the dialog this has stirred up…maybe someone out there will get the message that there is a real problem here! I came to the United States with my family when I was a child & at no time did we feel we were “owed” anything, we were thankful for the opportunities we had here, my Dad worked hard & taught us to do the same. At no time did we ever take a penny from any type of government assistance, we felt that our place was to contribute to the good of this country, not take from it. We did all we could to assimilate into this great nation & expected no special favors.
I recently went into Sears at the Boulevard Mall & I will not return. All of the signs in there are in both English & Spanish & the employees at the Customer Service desk were young hispanic girls who could not communicate well! I told a supervisor what I thought about that, I purchased nothing & I have not returned & will not. Maybe that’s the key, we need to let people know that we find this kind of thing offensive & then NOT GO BACK!! If if begins to effect their pocketbooks, maybe they will get the message! I don’t have any problem with hispanic people, I grew up & went to school with many of them in Southern Californa. However, things are different now, the attitude now of many hispanics is different. A lot of the attitude is that the U.S. somehow owes them something, that we should cater to them as a group…this is not right. To be fair, we are also to blame for allowing things to get to this point. We have provided ESL classes in our schools, we make most paperwork in both languages, we give a choice of language on most phone systems, etc. All this does is encourage those who only speak Spanish to continue to do so. Where is the incentive to speak English? Communication is very important in so many areas & in order to do so effectively, people need to be able to understand each other. I’m sorry to say that I think we are in for some real unpleasant confrontations before this is resolved & it does need to be resolved. There are more & more hispanic people flooding into the U.S. & things are going to come to a head because people are just plain sick of it!!!

  72. Cheryl Says:

I, too, say “Good for Pahrump”. I have trouble understanding why ballots have to be printed in both English and Spanish. I always understood that in order to vote, you had to be a citizen of the United States, either natural-born or naturalized. And in order to be a naturalized citizen, you had to speak, write and understand English. So why are ballots, these past few years, in Spanish? Isn’t it costing a lot more money to have all those extra pages added to the ballots? I’m all for allowing people to speak whatever they want to in their homes, or among themselves, but please, don’t make me have to choose which language I want to converse in when I call a business or apply for a job. I’ve been denied several jobs that I was otherwise qualified for because I wasn’t bi-lingual. I was born here. Why should it be forced on me to be bi-lingual??? It should be English, period.
I agree with the earlier posts which have said if we, as Americans, go to another country, we should be able to speak the language there so we can get along with the people. And I do believe that if we moved to another country to live, we would have to speak that language in order to become citizens so we could vote. Let’s keep it that way here.

  73. chuck mc kinney Says:

I support the english only law!!!!
Our govt. needs to send these law breakers home, now!!!No work permits!! I ask,Why are these people allowed to break our laws??

  74. sharlem Says:

I think since this is a free country yes i good that we have to speak english but why does everyone only talk about mexicans what about the chinese and other races why do you gays only have a problem with mexicans. remember this was our country at one point. as you can see alot of the stree names are in spanish. especially in california. i’m not against english being the primary language but this is a free country and everyone can speak what thye want. you people a really racis and no matter what you do we as latinos we will never stop speaking spanish this is not going to get you nowere

  75. Al Says:

I think it’s great. All government documents should be printed only in English. If the citizen can’t read it, then they should pay for an Interpreter, not the taxpayers.

  76. jz Says:

I agree with the English as official language. I am appauled that it actually has to be debated and defended. I have nothing against immigrants coming to the United States to make a better life for themselves and in a world market it is important to be able to communicate in other languages. However, if people want to come to the United States to work and live and contribute to the community, they should speak our language, which is English. Nobody is saying that you can’t speak Spanish, German, Mandarin, etc… The only thing that is being said is that when I go to McDonald’s I would like to be able to order in English and request a pepper packet in English without having the cashier show me every packet under the counter because he/she doesn’t speak English. When anyone moves or visits another country, we are not accomodated by their society to speak English. It’s not racist…it is common sense.

  77. Jonathan Hanes Says:

I personally cannot believe that a town, anywhere in America, would pass such an ordinance. Requiring English to be the only language spoken is not only Unconstitutional, it is a step backwards towards the Jim Crow laws of Post-Civil War era America. What is next, requiring people to eat the same way? No more Mexican or Italian food? OH, no more ethnic dress either. Sorry, jeans and t-shirts only now. We all have to be “American”. Someone please take this to District and Supreme Court. This is a law this REPUBLICAN does not support.

  78. Susana Says:

I think that everyone who comes to this country should learn to speak English. They should also be able to speak their own language as long as it doesn’t cause a language barrier in social situations or in situations where English is required. If they are smart, they should learn English and be bilingual! I am (bilingual). Knowing a second language has its advantages.

  79. Zach Says:

I think it’s great and that they are doing nothing wrong by passing this ordinance. I think that if foreigners are going to live in America, they should have to learn to read and speak English. I have nothing against people continuing to speak their own language, but English needs to be their primary language if they are going to live and work here. I don’t expect me to move to Iraq and they are forced to learn English. I would learn how to speak their langauge. If they are a tourist, that is fine, but if you choose to live in this great nation that we call America, you will need to learn our language. How screwed up will a nation be if they have two languages in their country. The country needs to set a standard and enforce this nation wide.

  80. Elaine Says:

I only hope this will spread through out all of the United States and English will become the official spoken language,as it should be! No more push “1″ for English! If you want to live here speak English!

  81. Esperanza Says:

I am very confused with all those who assume that Spanish speaking people pay no Federal or State Taxes. When shopping I have yet to be asked if I am illegal? or Spanish speaking only? and if so, then I do not have to pay any Taxes, on my PURCHASES. Spanish speaking Consumers pay Taxes, just like any English speaking Consumers. When working Taxes are withheld aswell, and if there not, it is not the Spanish speaker you should be addressing your hateful comments too. It sounds like these people are looking for someone to blame for all their problems, and today it’s Spanish speakers. What will you do with Tourist that might want to leave Thousands of Dollars in your Establishments? will you show them the “DOOR”?. HYPOCRITICAL STANDARDS, if you ask me.

  82. Elizabeth Wiley Says:

I think what Parhump did was very courageous. If more towns and cities stood up to the divide that’s separating our country I don’t think immagration would be such a problem. If I were to move to Mexico I would learn to speak the language. I wouldn’t want to make an entire country change for just me. If the illegals want to live here and eventually earn citizenship then the first step should be learning english.

  83. richard Jones Says:

I think it should be a requirement for getting a job. This is the United States and our language is English.

  84. Ronald Says:

I do not mind if people speak spanish. What I mind is if people cant speak english, which they are supposed to be able to do when they are a citizin. I am so tired of not being able to communicate with a worker at a store or hotel when I need something and the store or hotel is in Las Vegas. I had to tell my spouse *using my HS spanish) what to say to our maid here in Vegas at the Hilton in order to get more towels!!!

Ever try to talk to any landscaper to have them plant according to your instructions? Official language should mean that to get employement they should know the language.

not only that I do not think I should have to know spanish to get some jobs, just because the workers cannot speak it.

yes we are a nation of immigrants, but did anyone notice that all the rest of us learned the language?

  85. Ryan Pugh Says:

I understand that it would be easier if most people in America knew how to speak English, and I think that US citizens should learn the language. However, I think the government should offer the service for free. Other than that, anyone in the US has freedom of speech. This means that they can say whatever they want in whatever language they want. It does not mean that everyone has to listen or print documents in 30 other languages, but they still have the right. They also have the right to wave a flag if they want to. Everyone has their own beliefs and cultures, including putting up a cross in front of a church. If government officials want English to be spoken, then they should be taking an active approach to help. Instead they have come off like a few racists that woke up on the wrong side of the bed and couldn’t tell the Mexican what he wanted because he couldn’t speak Spanish. We are all sharing the same country and are all somehow linked to a line of immigrants. I would think that the town of Pahrump would be ran by more educated and mature adults. I wonder what the homebuilders and developers in Pahrump will do if their workers can’t speak another language? I’m sure Pahrump loves to see the money from these projects, but can’t stand that the many people who contribute to them do not speak English.
Bottom line: This ordinance needs to be revised. It is unconstitutional and will not fly. Pahrump needs to stop complaining and come up with a solution.

  86. Ronald Says:

pgt: you said something very pertinant to this conversation when you spoke about being in another coutry where more than french was spoken:

“Everyone speaks at least 3 languages, FLUENTLY, even the subway clerks.”

    HURRAH!

The problem we have here is that many people DO NOT SPEAK ENGLISH and work here. They know the foreign language, but not the language of the country.

I would have no problem with people being skilled in multiple languages as long as I can conduct business in my state in the USA in English.

    That is the problem.

We are being asked to accomodate people that have no desire to learn the language of the country and the businesses in this country.

    That is what is wrong.

  87. Ralph Says:

I am so happy to know that Pahrump took the first step! I have personally taken a stand as well. I WILL NOT hire a new employee at my company if the applicant can not speak ENGLISH! WILL NOT!! Am I discriminating against the non-english speaking person? How would they know? They can’t understand the language! Way to go Pahrump!!

  88. PATRICIA Says:

YOU BETTER BE PREPARED TO DEFEND YOUR RACIST WAYS. PEOPLE HAVE THE RIGHT TO SPEAK WHAT EVER LANGUAGE THEY WANT. AFTER ALL WE ARE A COUNTRY OF DIFFERENT PEOPLE AND DIFFERENT LANGUAGES. WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO FREEDOM OF SPEECH. LEARN TO SPEAK SPANISH OR WHAT EVER LANGUAGE. I DESCEND FROM GERMAN ,FRENCH AND IRISH. YOU DON’T HEAR ANY BODY COMPLAINING ABOUT THEIR LANGUAGE. SO LIVE WITH IT OR BE PREPARED FOR A LOT OF ACLU LAWSUITS FROM PEOPLE WHO DON’T LIKE YOUR NEW RULING.

  89. Teresa Says:

HATS OFF TO PAHRUMP! It is about time that English became the official language of this country. I don’t travel to other countries and expect them to speak my lanugage so why is that we should speak any other language here in America? I believe that if you live in this country you should be able to read and speak the language or you ARE NOT entitled to any government benefits. Either speak the lanugage or go home!

  90. Val Kiffer Says:

I am amazed at these comments! This is 2006. The 60’s were 40+ years ago, yet the overwhelming demonstration of bigoty and ignorance right here on this blog makes me feel like I live in Texas! I am proud to be a Nevadan and I am proud to be an American, yet these comments make me feel ashamed. We already take a beating for our failure to educate our children, our inhuman stance toward the impoverished and homeless and our inability to control our violence in the National Public’s eye. I can just imagine how the rest of the nation is going to view us now: a bunch of bigoted, racist morons. Who the hell are you kidding when you say this idiocy isn’t racially motivated? Not me. Does that somehow make you feel better? The large majority of people who speak Spanish in Nevada are Americans! That language was spoken in this part of the world long before English ever was and besides, why should we care if someone else wants to speak their native language? Good Lord, that’s like complaining about programs on TV when you can simply block them or turn the channel.

The Founders of our Constitution were brilliant folks who made it clear that this country was about freedom. People like most of you call yourselves “Good Americans” yet you selectively agree with the constitution when it suits your beliefs! What hypocrites! As an American, I am free (that’s the operative word) to fly the Jolly Roger if I want! Countries like the old Soviet Union, Nazi Germany and most current day Islamic Fundalmentalists nations are the ones who dictate what language you can speak and what flag you fly, not the United States. Perhaps you bigots should all move to Pahrump, secede from the Union and have your own little fascist state where you tell your population how they can speak and what flag they can fly while we here in American can enjoy our freedoms as the founding fathers intended.

  91. walt deardon Says:

I am very glad that Palrump did this. They definitly did the right thing. Why do we have to cater to people who entered this country illegally?
    walt Deardon

  92. Bill Says:

My hats off to Pahrump. Now I hope the rest of the state and the country in whole join in.

  93. kathryn blodgett Says:

I’m going to make this about you. Your reporter couldn’t find anyone that supported the measure. Well he went to the Mexican reasturants, DUH? I’m sure after all the jokes on the radio and TV about country dumpkins in Pahrump, who would want to put it out there to be ridiculed in front of the world. What no one is paying attention to is it says, “ILLEGAL” aliens. Who said people can’t move here legally.
I agree with everyone who’s tired of paying for people who don’t pull their wieght. Everyone needs help now and then, but then they get on their feet and help someone else. “Illegals” appear to want and take and then thumb their noses at their helpers. My great-grandparents moved here from Germany and Poland in the early, mid 1800’s. They didn’t asked for help from anyone and they learned English to get along with their nieghbors. They did buisness in English and they made sure their children learned English first. If I went to another country even for a visit how could I expect them to speak English just for me?

  94. Lori Says:

This IS America, after all!!! English should be the official language in every city without ever having it on any ballot!

  95. Mark Says:

Spanish is the official language of Mexico so using your logic Mexico must be racist then. Stop playing the race card, Hispanic or Latino is not a RACE, contrary to what the hate group La Raza (The Race) says. So how can you be racist against a non existant race. Bottom line these people can speak whatever they want, but the government needs to stop catering to them and do everything in English. If they want to take part then they will have to learn the language like all other immigrants did. Stop making mexicans a special case, there is nothing special about them, they shouldn’t get special treatment, because that is discrimination against others. Bi-Lingual requirments in jobs should be outlawed because it gives hispanics an unfair advantage and is discrimination against non-hispanics. Oh and the reason that people aren’t complaining about China town, is because they don’t go round whining about having everything in Chinese. They come here, get on and learn English. If you don’t like it then you are free to leave.

  96. bob Says:

    Finally!!!
Last time I went to AutoZone, the mexican girl at the register very politely spoke spanish to the two customers in front of me. When it was my turn, I stepped up and she sharply said in English “Is that all all?”
Why didn’t she ask me if I wanted to speak spanish?
    What a racisist!!

  97. Wendy Says:

If they want to come to our country then they could at least speak our language. They have all the rights in the world to talk in what ever language in thier personal home areas, but in public speak the language that we can understand. We did not go to your country, you came to ours. PLEASE ADAPT TO OUR WAYS NOT YOURS. I have no problems with other people coming here to make a new life, but do it leagally and adapt to our language or you are not here for the right reasons.

  98. Greg Kamer Says:

I don’t know how they can call an English only ordinence racist….. It has nothing to do with race. They are simply saying we chose to conduct the official business of the town in English.

They are not saying you can’t speak your native tounge if you choose.

  99. JH Says:

I support it. Why is it the English speaking Americans are forced to pay (through your tax money) for Spanish printed handouts at the DMV, voting stations, everywhere you look, if it’s a government instruction sheet, it’s printed in both languages. Tough sh*t, learn to read English or pay higher taxes to have this stuff printed in Spanish. Last time I was at the DMV retaking my exam I had a mexican next to me with a transelator HELPING her take the test… how’s this right ?! Are street signs going to be posted in both languages now ? My hat’s off to Pahrump.

  100. GL Says:

    ***English only?***

So no more Taco Bell right?
And I guess I can’t go to Panda Express anymore, they have chow mein there.

But why stop at fast food restaurants. How bout the name Las Vegas that name was given by Spanish explorers. And Nevada too. Oh and let’s not forget Pahrump. I
say we fine everyone $50. for every time they say the word PAHRUMP.

Yeah that makes a lot of sense people. And for those of you who
say this is not racist go back
    re-read your comments. then count
how many times you used the words
Mexican or Mexico. What are people from China, England, Italy, Guatemala, considered Mexican?

  101. Norm Says:

It’s about time and long overdue. From signs no one can read to the “press one for English. Congratulations Pahrump and soon other cities may follow your lead. If you live here, learn and speak English. Small cities are doing what the Feds should have done 40 years ago.

  102. William Sandiford Says:

How about LAS VEGAS when are we going to get on board and do this! It’s not just about Mexicans, it should be all nationalities, if you are going to live here you’ve got to speak, read and write English or get the — out. And send all illegals back to where they came from. I’m tired of my tax dollars going to my government to take care of them!

  103. Terry Says:

I am so happy people are finally as tired as I am of immigrants thinking they can live here and NEVER learn English. And I know plenty of people who would gladly take the jobs they leave behind when they are deported because they don’t feel the need to even become a U.S. citizen. Our government has allowed this problem to escalate into what it is today and they need to step up to the plate and take a stand already. I don’t mind anyone speaking their native language or even working here, but I do expect those same people to follow the rules we all have to follow. We all had to be citizens first and our ancestors had no problem learning english back in the day so what makes today different…..other than a wimpy P.C government. And I love the people who make the statement about the 1st amendment and their freedoms here in the U.S. A hate to burst your bubbles, but if you aren’t a citizen, those freedoms don’t apply to you now…….or ever! Quit being so lazy and do what you need to do LEGALLY to live here. Quite frankly I’m tired of my hard earned tax dollars paying for benefits for people who are too lazy or ignorant to take care of themselves.

  104. Gail Says:

I usually don’t make comments on blogs, but I’m sure going to make a comment on this one. I commend Pahrump for taking this step. My neighbor of umpteen years just went into a nursing home, so her home was sold, and the people that bought the house do not speak English. I cannot walk over to their house and tell them to keep off of my grass, not to place their open garbage can on my side of the driveway (I’ve seen rats), keep their music down after 10pm because my bedroom is near where they rev up their cars and play loud music late at night, not to climb onto and over my fence into my yard to get their kids ball, and not to park their car in front of my house (because there are five in their driveway)so the street sweeper can do their job. I had to go out of my way to locate someone that could speak Spanish to relay these messages to them while I was standing right there. LEARN A LITTLE OF THE LANGUAGE! What if there was an emergengy and I needed to communicate with them? It is the craziest feeling I have ever experienced. Don’t get me wrong, I think my neighbors are nice people – I would just like for them to be able to understand that I have boundaries when it comes to my home. I like to keep a nice neat yard. I pay taxes to get my leaves swept from the curb. I PAY to keep my yard swept, raked, watered, etc. At least learn enough of the language to get by. I don’t think if I went to another country, that anyone would seek out someone to translate English for me. That would be my responsibility as a foreigner that has moved to their country, to find a way to communicate with THEM. by “Feeling helpless in my own home.”

  105. sc Says:

By passing this law, Pahrump is emphasizing its stereotype as a town of small-minded people who don’t understand the basic principles of our country. The law is petty and discriminative, and it confirms our role in the world as a country of uneducated, pompous loud-mouths. If everyone in Pahrump is now required to speak English, residents are going to have to take some grammar classes so that they can all obey the law!!

This is a divided country that has lost all its values due to many reasons. We have come down to fighting about a language. English should be the first language. All people from all over the world who come here love the country and most want to learn the language. If you think about it it would only better the latin community to speak english since it is one of the most common languages learned all over the world. SO maybe speaking it would not be bad thing instead would only improve yourself and your invironment. I have been to mexico and they do not try to help you unless you know there language and the majority of latinos who come from all over the world come for a better life. So if you want to improve you and your families learn it, then you can fight back. We all forgot that this land never belonged to us. We should be fighitng our governemnt and all its corruption it has installed through out the years and why our children are starving and why the deficit is worse then it has ever been. This is the real issue. Everybody wants to scream racism and unconstitutional. Our constitution has been destroyed through out the years, all it is is some lawyers some who are makeing money off of great media hype, that is truly disgusting and that is RACISM at its best. The United States is and English speaking country and yes that should be the language. Just like Mexico is a hispanic country and spanish is its language. When you start changing what made your countries then you take away its culture and its prosperity. We as Americans should want to learn something new to communicate with all walks of life, but we should not have to sacrifice our language to communicate with yours. And changing this language means all other nationaliteis, japanese, korean, chinese, Iranins, Indoneasians, etc. would all have to learn spanish just to speak to you, THAT IS SELFISH>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>If you live here you should be legal. You are using american resources to better yourself so you should be legal, you should have to follow the same eguide lines like everyone else. Dont talk about bringing money to this counrty because we loose just as much on those who are illegal and on welfare who do not want to better themselves but instead drain the economy financially as well as all the crime that comes with it and all the LEGAL tax dollars spent trying to stop it. I am for eveyone who wants to improve themselves and make a life out of this nation, but think about what this nation is for and about before you try to change it.

  107. Sandy Says:

Its about time… Now lets do something about California.

  108. jaquie devore Says:

To those few who mentioned prostitution being legal in Pahrump. Prostitution is NOT legal in the town of Pahrump. There is a town ordinance that specifically prohibits prostitution in the town of Pahrump.
You must drive through Pahrump to get to the brothels but they are NOT in Pahrump.

  109. Dawn Farber Says:

Wow declaring the english lanuage the official language in America, What a concept!

  110. Not Your Mama Says:

For those of you who believe this is not a racial issue, I beg of you to go read through posts on our local Pahrump Forum @ http://www.pvimall.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi

Then tell me this is not racial. Unless of course you are just as foul as the yeehaws who instigated this, in which case we have several wingnut realtors waiting to sell you a lovely new home built on poof dirt. Don’t ask to borrow my boat come next flash flood.

  111. Sydnie B. Says:

Why is everyone picking on just “Mexicans” and “their” language? Hello America! Those of you stating that are showing a bit of prejudice. Let’s get a little education here. The Spanish language originated from Spain. The “Hispanic” countries south of the border from us are not just Mexicans, but Puerto Ricans, Salvadorans, Columbians, etc, plus from South America! All people from down south, except from Brazil, speak a derivative of the Spanish language. Though, I’m sure that the “English as an official language” law was probably directed due to the majority influx of illegal Hispanics here in NV. Hopefully none of you forget that we also have other not so noticeable and overlooked illegals from other countries, ie, Chinese, Russia, Middle Eastern, etc., and even British! Unfortunately, those young teens that demonstrated with the Mexican flag (easiest to get) also probably got their opinions from ignorant and more than likely illegal parents. I’m proud to say that my always legal and now American citizen mother and father taught me better, and insisted that I speak both English and Spanish equally perfect. When I go to a restaurant or even a drive through, I expect to speak with an English speaking person to take my order, especially when they automatically assume I speak Spanish (to which I respond in English). My parents taught me to be proud of both roots and my birth country, which is the reason why both my brother and I proudly served in the US military. I’ve lived all over Europe, and no laws were ever passed in Germany, Belgium, Italy or Spain that their native language should be the official language spoken. (They’re probably laughing at us now). Same goes for down south! So, as a Hispanic (½ Spanish and ½ Mexican) American, born and bred here, I do agree with Pahrump’s new law, but I believe it should be EXPECTED throughout the US. Plain and simple, if you want to be an American, with every right that we have fought for, then instead of fighting to be allowed to speak your own language here, “fight” to speak English or go back to your own country language home. Being an American is a privilege, not a right! (Retired US Army)

  112. Amy Says:

How did this get so off track? It’s not about SPEAKING the language, it’s about READING it, right? The analogy that if we were to go to another country, they would require us to speak their language? Maybe if we lived there, but as tourists? They’d accomodate us IF they wanted our money – just as we do.

The root of this is clear to me – Americans are annoyed that Hispanics take precedence – when it changed from “Press 9 for Spanish” to “Press 1 for English” I knew that the face of America would change, and so this attempt by Pahrump to “Return to normal” is just the beginning.

And therein lies the problem. With the majority of those emigrating to America – legal or non – being of Hispanic origin, and for the first time in our history, refusing to learn English, drastic measures were taken to turn the tide.

BUT – it’s too late folks. The Hispanics have political pull – and Mexico egging them on by telling them we stole this land from them. Together, they cause dissent, and so forget Iraq. WE are headed to our own Civil War!!!

My personal opinion on English only? Since most people can’t even agree on how to pronounce, much less spell, simple everyday words, I find the whole notion quite ironic.

I do agree we do the children a disservice by trying to teach them in two languages – it just detracts from their overall knowledge and they are then truly “Left Behind”

  113. Ernie Hatley Says:

I don’t see a problem with the “English only” ordinance. I fail to see how it is violating the first amendment rights of any one. Pahrump is not saying someone from another country can not speak their language. Pahrump is saying what all towns, city, state and federal goverment agencies should say, this is the United States of America. The offical language is English. The constitution of the United States is written in English as are most older important goverment documents. Our street signs are in Engish. Our road construction signs are in English. The idea here is that even if a person is in this country legally, they need to be able to at least read English. Otherwise what good does it do to let them take their driving test in spanish or any othe language than English? If they can’t read the road signs they are a hazzard on the road, and they won’t be able to find where they are going. In short we are doing these people a diservice by catering to them in their native language and not making them learn the English language. I am not a world traveler by far, but I have been to Mexico and Germany and I did not see any road signs there in English. They feel it is your responsibility to learn their language, not theirs to translate for you. No matter what country you are from if you want to be an United States citizen, then you should have to learn to read and write in English to become a U.S.citizen. Just think of the money alone that states would save by not having to print documents in several different languages or hire teachers to teach students in languages other than English. As for the flag issue. The Flag of the United States should come first in this country. The Flag of you former country should be displayed proudly if you choose to do so, but out of respect to the United States Flag your country’s Flag should be flown below the U.S. Flag. If you pay attention to city and county buildings in the various states that fly both the U.S. Flag and the state Flag, the state Flag is always below the U.S. Flag. The AMERICAN Civil Liberitys Union needs to remember who created them and that the key word is AMERICAN. They should focus their time and money when the civil rights of United States citizens are violated, and leave the illegal immagrants to the I.N.S. Persons in this country illegally should have only VERY LIMITED rights such as protection against cruel and inhuman treatment, in short protection against real crimes not just because they were refused welfare because they are not a legal U.S. citizen of and a member or a minority group. I am not against anyone, no matter what country they come, from who wants to come to the United States to make a better life for them and or their family. What I am against, is these people, especially the illegal people being treated better that a Unites States Citizen. Heck let a illegal become disabled from work and he has no problem getting state and or federal aid. I am a medically retired law enforcement officer who was hurt on the job and am told that I do not qualify for Social Security Disability assistance because I won’t die from my injury and can still walk and talk. Now I ask you, What is wrong with that picture? Well this is all just my opinion for what it is worth. Thanks you for your time.

  114. Guy Shields Says:

Remember Ellis Island? Those people who came here made it a priority to learn the language of their new country, The USA, and teach their children as well. It irks me to hear spanish spoken whats next German? Hungarian? Italian? French? Chineese? Vienamese? etc??? WHY do we allow the mexicans to invade our country with their customs and language? lets force them to be legal or go home..Have you been to broadacres lately? they took it over especialy the food concessions a few years ago. want to go to Tijuana? GO!!! Breaking the law makes them criminals lets put a penalty in that instead of a “free bus pass to the border” some penalty that is.. Lets put some teeth in the paper tiger..
How about a stiff fine on the “Mexican Government” for each illegal returned ? that should slow the flow on the other side of the border and get us some funding to stop them at a legal entry application headquarters on the MEXICAN SIDE of the border that could be manned by both US and Mexican Immigration people.

  115. PAUL Says:

I guess I don’t understand the problem. It is the right of a country to have all its official documents writtin in the language of that country. What IS racist is to only cater to one other language by adding a copy of documents in that language and not all other languages. The ACLU should jump all over that one but instead they only jump to help one other people. Could it be that the ACLU is racist??? Anyway, legal papers (especially from the IRS) are incapable of being understood by the people who wrote them in English, how can printing them in any other language help?

  116. R. Daniels Says:

When did you get the right to tell anyone what language to speak? What country is Pahrumps in anyway? HEY! How about we build a BIG wall at the Mexico border and have one entry! We could call it “Checkpoint Charlie”! It worked in Berlin for a long time. That is until some grandstander wanted it torn down. Now all of those people with East German accents can just cross over.

  117. CAROL Says:

    THANK GOD FOR PAHRUMP…..
ITS ABOUT TIME SOMEONE DID IT
NOW LETS HOPE LAS VEGAS WILL DO IT TOO…LEARN ENGISH…..
IF YOU LIVE HERE LEARN ENGLISH.

  118. Michelle Says:

This is America! English is spoken here. Learn it, speak it. It isn’t any different if you go to another country, you learn their language. If you don’t like it, leave.

  119. Michelle/Henderson, NV Says:

This is America not Mexico. Learn English. If you don’t like it go back to Mexico.

  120. Mary Erlan Says:

I think it is about time someone stuck up for us AMERICANS. I just can not beleive it has come to this, that our Government(even though it is local) has to vote on making English our language. That is sad. This not only goes for the Mexicans but for other workers here from other countries. I just wish our leaders in Washington, DC would do the same.

  121. sue dillon Says:

you go Pahrump!!!!!!!!!The whole country should do this

  122. T. Brown Says:

I don’t live in Las Vegas anymore, but I grew up there and keep up on the current events because my family still lives there. I was at first shocked to see that Pahrump was trying to pass English only, but then I thought it was probably a good idea. When I go back to Las Vegas to visit my family, I’m amazed by the growth there and especially the growth of the spanish speaking population. I lived in Las Vegas before it was “cool” and I grew up in both Henderson and Las Vegas…. It was “normal” then if you think about normal as what it was then and what it is now.

My little brother and sister are now in the school district and my mom is a teacher so it’s funny when she tells me stories that I’m not accustomed to living here in Omaha, Nebraska. Stories like the fact that my little brother was the ONLY American in his catechism class…. or the week that there was the “Day Without Immigrants” a student had the nerve to tell her that if it weren’t for the Mexicans in Las Vegas, my mom would not have a job. Wow! (My mom retorted with, “Yes I would have a job because there would still be students!”)Not only that but the fact that the stores are overpopulated with rude people hitting her with carts and not saying excuse me (probably because they can’t…) I always ask her why she stays… but I guess it’s easier said than done. And why run from a situation when we’ve been living there since 1984??

I am in no way shape or form racist, being a minority myself I would never pass judgement on any other race… but at the same time I agree that Las Vegas/Nevada/California should definitely take action and set some ground rules for people who can’t speak English. I think a lot of people blogging here are missing the point. No one is saying that non english speaking people cannot speak their langusge. There’s no way that could ever be enforced. What everyone is happy for is the fact that by enforcing english only for the city, instead of having a language barrier between someone and their fellow citizens people can all communicate homogenously.

I can’t believe you Nevadans have to put up with what seems to be a growing problem. It’s like you’re a foreigner in your own world. I read these stories and it’s sad that the barrier is causing so much havoc in the city I grew up in. I’m so glad it’s not like this in Omaha… at least not yet.

  123. patricia Says:

I work in a casino with a break room for all employees. I do not think that when I go on break I should have to sit and watch a spanish speaking program. It is totally ridiculous.I think anyone should be able to move here to improve their lives but PLEASE learn to speak my language, english. just like any other foreigner who comes here. we are not forced to learn korean, filipino, etc. This catering to hispanic people is getting way out of hand. LEARN ENGLISH OR GO BACK TO MEXICO!!

  124. Nicoloe Says:

This is directed to all the people who have a problem with Pahrump’s new ways. If you don’t like it why don’t you GO back to your own country and get the heck out of our’s!!! I am tired of paying your way and your children’s way through life. I am tired of not being able to understand a word you say. If you want to be here then learn our language and get you but off of every one else’s hard earned money get a real paying job. And pay some taxes. I think you all have taken enough from our American children. And if any true American has a problem with what I have said. Then maybe you don’t deserve the privilege of being an American

  125. Carrie Says:

I don’t think most people are being racist by pointing out Mexicans rather than Germans, Chinese, etc. You get two language choices when you call a government agency, English or Spanish. No German, Chinese, French or any other foreign language. Makes me wonder what they do when they get here. Oh, that’s right, they learn the language. We don’t cater to them like we do to Spanish speaking individuals. They have to learn enough English to communicate with businesses and government agencies. I recently received a letter from the state in Spanish! I wondered how much it costs to print in both languages. Then they had to mail me one in English. I feel lucky enough to be in the United States. Those who come here to prosper as Americans should be proud to learn the language of their new country.

  126. Alan McDonald Says:

Our constitution has allowed us to do many things. Even reformat it to accommodate to our lives today. We should be very thankful, especially during this holiday season, that we have the options to control our own laws. We have come from many origins of the world and fought many battles to get to where we are today. We must show this world that we hold something very dear with this country. Let us be the bigger country and shine our American pride for the better and not for the worst.

  127. Barbara Says:

If all immigrants are required to speak English, then all English speaking peoples need to learn to speak Native American languages because English is not the native language of this country, and only became so from mass genocide.

  128. JOHN JASPERSON Says:

WHERES THE ORDINANCE FOR “STUPIDITY”? THE BOARD MEMBERS WHO VOTED FOR THIS ALL QUALIFY!!! WHAT PAHRUMP DOESN’T NEED WHILE WE ARE TRYING TO ATTRACT TAX PAYING BUSINESSES – IS ALL THIS NEGATIVE NONSENSE! LET’S LET THE NEW BOARD TAKE OFFICE AND OVERTURN THIS AND LET THOSE “REPLACED” BOARD MEMBERS GO AND CLIMB BACK UNDER A ROCK FROM WHERE THE CAME. AMAZING THE PERSON WHO PROMOTED THIS GARBAGE WASN’T EVEN VOTED INTO OFFICE. NOR DID HE RUN FOR ELECTION!! COULD IT BE THAT HE HAS A FEW DEMONS IN HIS CLOSET??

  129. Tim Wasson Says:

The kids at UNLV need to learn to read ! The English-only ordinance approved in Pahrump does not say anything about speaking English, it says we will no longer spend our tax money to print anything in any language but English(American).

  130. Rick Says:

    Nobody wants these people here.
    Simple as that.
They destroyed their own country by over population , now they are doing it here.
They are going to bankrupt the Southwest, West coast. They took over the casino i use to love to work at.
I quit because of them, my country is being destroyed because of them..
    Rick..

  131. MIck Guy Says:

I love the idea of UNLV’s protest of this law today ( Nov 29). Why? Because it is silent and we don’t have to listen to them whine, In any language! Keep up the good quiet work and speak English when your done!

  132. Cheryl Says:

I think that the students that are protesting at UNLV need to learn what they are protesting about.
They are suppose to be in college, they should get their facts right.

The city is has not stated no one will not be able to not speak another language. They are saying they will not furnish any written forms in any other language but AMERICAN ENGLISH. So if someone needs to have a certain form then learn the language.

When I first moved here to Las Vegas to work in any casino you had to read, write and understand ENGLISH. NO MATTER WHAT COUNTY YOU WERE FROM.

The Mexicans are the ones who are protesting this law. WHY? Do they think everyone owes them something; I have not seen any other nationality complaining about this new law that is sweeping the entire county, why because they have taken the time and energy to learn to read and write in the language of the country they choose to live in legally.

There are two people I work with that are protesting this ordinance, 1 of them married an illegal immigrant from Mexico who has been sent back because he is a convicted drug dealer. But guess what he is back and she is proud of it. The second person will not speak English to his children, who were both born here in the United States, why because he says by the time they grow up everyone here should be speaking Mexican.

This is the type of ignorance that the UNLV students are protesting for. Not for the people who want to be AMERICAN just the ones who want to LIVE OFF of AMERICANS.

  133. GK Says:

Go Pahrump…its about time someone finally took some initiative to make a statement stating this is America. We all might not accept illegals in america, but if they spoke our language and tried to really be apart of this country, not just reap the benefits and have a better quality of life, Americans might accept them in our country. I wish Las Vegas would do it, just so we could see the outroar of people complain about racism and hate.

  134. Shawon Says:

Can’t they find something better to protest? For example, Chavez (the ‘president’ of Venezuela) continues to push for Latin American hegemony and is working trade deals with countries engaged in nefarious activities (Syria, Iran and Russia). Why can’t they protest that? Why can’t they rally their hispanic colleagues and convince them that a Latin American arms race threatens the fragile socio-political climate in Latin America – and will increasingly strain US – Latin American relations (when was the last time any of those countries gave billions of dollars in economic aid to Latin America). Oh, and if Mexico is such a wonderful place…why o why are they purchasing state-of-the-art Russian fighters instead of investing in their grossly dilapidated infrastructure, poor health system and overall increasing poverty? Wait, I know…its because US taxpayers get to do that!

Here is a thought…get an education in world issues and how they affect the social climate in OUR country instead of getting upset about Americans taking pride in being American and seeking a common identity…some would call this national pride. Further, have you even considered the problems YOUR children will have to resolve if we follow what YOU think an appropriate course of action for our nation to follow?

Oh, one last thought…before you orchestrate a protest, you may want to check the demographics. I felt discriminated against because there weren’t many – if any – African-Americans in the protest…and we’re always left out! Now I am pissed off. I am going to call the ACLU and some of my friends to launch a protest against the UNLV protest for racial discrimination…

  135. John Martinez Says:

You are a whole bunch of NAZIS!!!!
    and a threat to America!!!
    Who are the real terrorists???
    YOU ALL ARE!!

  136. Veronica Lizeth Says:

I was one of the students protesting yesterday at UNLV, I find many of these coments troubling and mere white supremacist propaganda, some of you say that we are not educated on what we are protesting about, in fact we are very aware of what we protest about, of how we feel, and no, not only MEXICAN AMERICANS are protesting this ordinance, please shake off your ignorance, people from all ethnicities, races, nationalities came together yesterday for one purpose, the end of discrimination, the end of oppression against minorities, against those who have no voice to be heard.
I have read the ordinance many times, I have even assited translating it in to other languages, and I understand the concept of it, the concept of ordinances like this is PURE HATE, nothing more.
Educate your self and liberate your self through consciousness.
Stop the ignorance and the hate that fills all of your hears, it’s just a shame that there is so much racism, xenophobia, hate, in our communities, in America today, just remember that ALL of us are America, that no one is more American than the other, that there are millions of Americans that speak more than one language because they happen to be more educated, and no one has the right to stop them/us from expressing ourselves in any language we wish to, because liberty of expression breaks language barriers.
We are not immigrants, we have a long history of existence in the United States, a history that is longer than the one of other races, our people have been here for not hundreds, but thousands of years.
    EDUCATE YOUR SELF
    KNOW THE REAL FACTS
You all are fed WHITE SUPREMACY
We are in America no in Nazi Germany,
White supremacy is UNAMERICAN, discrimination is UNAMERICAN, racism is UNAMERICAN, as Americans we should all take a stand against all forms of hate, discrimination, dehumanization, isnt’ it what we are all about??
Doesn’t our faiths teach us to be embracing of other people, regardless of where they’re from???
    What is going on people???
    Are you kidding me???
    WAKE UP PLEASE!!!
Stop poisoning our America with all this hate.

  137. a p Says:

People should be allowed to speak in any tongue they please with no problems, but ENGLISH is our main spoken language. If you want to be in America, work in America, live and vacation in America, at least learn English. It helps us all understand and communicate with each other alot easier. Its only fair. I mean, when you go to another country not everyone you encounter will speak english so it helps to learn their language.

  138. michelle Says:

If you don’t like it here, than by all means.
Why should I have to put up with someone elses ignorance? I didn’t choose to live in Mexico.

ThEn again… these are the same people who did their little useless protest earlier this year with none other than MEXICAN FLAGS!!!! If they’re so proud of their heretage than why do they not live there???

  139. lenny NJ Says:

SHAME ON THESE PEOPLE. THIS IS aMERICA, THE LAND OF FREE SPEECH. FREEDOM OF THOUGHT AND EXPRESSION.i WONDER IF MR. MIRAGLIA’S PARENTS WOULD HAVE LIKED THIS LAW AS IMMIGRANTS TO THIS COUNTRY. WOULD HE AND HIS COHORTS THINK THIS WAY IF THE IMMIGRANT POPULATION TROUBLING THEM WERE WHITE AND SPOKE SOMETHING OTHER THAN SPANISH. EVENTUALLY EVERYONE IN THIS COUNTRY MELTS INTO THE CULTURE AND BECOME “REAL AMERICANS”. MY GRANDPARENTS WERE EASTERN EUROPEAN JEWS. I AM SECOND GENERATION AMERICAN AND STILL I HAVE BEEN TOLD WE ARE NOT THE “REAL AMERICANS”..SO WHAT DO THESE KINDS OF PEOPLE REALLY MEAN?

  140. TC Says:

Just an update on the “English Only” ordinance. The newly elected Pahrump Town Board, at their first meeting, introduced a new ordinance repealing the “English Only” ordinance passed by the prievious Board. Hopefully the New Board will concentrate on bringing people together, inviting tourism to come play, & doing what they can to control gorwth.

  141. al Says:

Have you noticed that there is a fair amount of incorrect English usage among the comments on this page, particularly those in support of the ordinance?

  142. UN Says:

Great Job Pahrum! Keep up the great work!

  143. Rob Says:

America is the melting pot of the world. Many people speaking different languages have made this home. It would be very difficult for all of us to learn all the languages that could be spoken here. That is why there is one, English.
More so in my opinion is the fact that some Mexicans are degrading the American life style. They are accustomed to living like cockroaches in communes which gives them an advantage when seeking wages, they don’t require the wages we do to survive.
If we as Americans want to survive in this economy it will require us to take a stand.
We need to demand the products we pay our hard earned American dollars for have at least a portion of there production rendered in America.
When we have work performed we need to demand 90% of the workers be American and English speaking.
We cannot sit on our hands and wait for our government to change the things happening, it is up to the American citizens to make change happen.
We can change the language spoken Here, change the people who speak it!

  144. Dave Says:

Well.. in my opinion, any neighborhood with too many mexicans or blacks turns into shit. This is because MOST mexicans and blacks have no class (rednecks suck ass too). Also, when you get alot of mexicans or blacks together, they all become evil monkeys. So, we hate illegals (mexicans) for disrespecting our country. Not all- but most. Blacks also have a huge percentage of (the “n” word), and they only ruin our society. They whine about slavery, but look at the jews- they went through 100X worse than the slaves, so they just studied hard and became successful. But, the bad percentage of blacks just run around like hostile monkeys waving their arms around when you drive down the street. They killed each over a coconut in Africa.. and they kill each other over a coconut today. It is not okay to blame slavery anymore. GET THE FUCK OVER IT!! Out.

  145. amy Says:

I was born in another country but learned English .
I do agree that every immigrant planning to live in this country has to learn English. I must admit that at first i was very much opposed to this law but now that i have seen peoples point of view i agree . I had to go through so many bothering paperwork for my mother before because of the fact that she did not speak the language it was very frustrating . However some wrote “Mexican” as a language that is incorrect the proper word is Spanish and may i say one thing Not Everyone that is of Hispanic descent is a “Mexican” that is something that i find very vexing please everyone look in a map and take a look at Latin America is more than just “Mexico”
    Thank you all .
